There are food shops and then there is Jelmoli. If money is not a concern then, this is your shop for the most exquisite food items. It's a huge department store in the city center of Zurich with floors of everything from fashion to food. I only visited the food department which is located on the lower level so I can only describe my experience there. There are rows of foods from around the world and a large section of wines from around the world. They also have a decent Swiss wine section. The cheese humidor here is worth just popping into. It had the most amazing variety of cheeses from around the world. The fresh produce is also of the highest quality. There are a handful of restaurants in here serving cuisines from different parts of the world. We visited one called Nippon Sushi and the chef there made us an Omakase menu comprised of the chefs selection of sushi on the day. It was amazingly good and super fresh. I came here to eat sushi at Nippon Food in the basement. It was really good and fresh, and it was also fun to walk around the gourmet market beforehand to check out all the foods and sample different kinds of gourmet oil and risotto. I'm glad I found a Groupon for a fantastic meal for two. Afterward, I went across to Mövenpick to sample a variety of red wines before picking out a lovely bottle from Chile. It's self-service, so you can pour yourself whatever you want to taste from all the bottles on display. At the register, I suddenly remembered that I had some UBS Keyclub points to redeem, so I was able to knock off CHF 20 from the purchase price. Awesome. Then I went upstairs to the always busy m.a.c. cosmetics counter, but a sales associate was quick to help me with my purchase, and then I was merrily on my way. Everything in Zurich is way overpriced, but the one thing that you CAN get for a reasonable price is CHEESE! The basement level of this department store reminds me of Harrods in London or Sogo in Taiwan because it has all the food down here, Actually, the layout and how the counters work reminds me a lot of Eataly in NY, First stop: the cheese room No, not a cheese case, but a cooled and humidified, wonderfully stinky room of Swiss cheese. The ones inside the room were a swiss focus, most of which were hard and had salt crystals. The guy who helped us was very knowledgeable and gave us a ton of samples. We ended up with some Alps kase, apenzeller, and gruyere (much more aged than anything I had in the US). For 300 grams, it was around CHF 10-11, Then, we walked out and found a ton of open refrigerated cheese cases with sample jars and tried a whole bunch more. Each cheese was strong, salty, and amazing in texture, and it was SO cheap compared to the US, Then, we moved onto the meat case. I love air dried beef, and they had 3 different types that they let us sample. The meat is relatively more expensive and similar in price to the US. Then, we got crusty bread, beer, and a half bottle of prosecco. We ended up in their food court area since it was so hot outside, and we basically had a nice indoor picnic. I was so happy eating cheese and bread, and this was probably my favorite meal in Zurich both for flavor and the value. read more

I am always on the lookout for good sushi joints in Zurich so when I read about this unconventional Japanese sushi bar downstairs in the Jelmoli shopping center, I just had to try it for myself. There were quite a few people working behind the bar and the service was very efficient. I ordered a plate of salmon sashimi (6 pieces), a mixed fish maki roll (12 pieces), and a cup of hot jasmine tea. While sipping my tea, I watched the crew prepare the various orders while I waited for mine. The efficiency level was high. Each person worked swiftly and methodically while no one got in each other's way. It wasn't long before my plates were placed before me. The sashimi was fresh and delectable with just the right cut and thickness. The presentation was nice too. There was a small bed of seaweed salad and the wasabi was served up on a cucumber cup. The mixed fish maki was good too, but did not stand out from what I've had in the past. Half way through my lunch I asked for more ginger and got it within 20 seconds. Again, impressed with the speed of service. One thing that would have made this meal better is if they brewed their tea with real tea leaves instead of serving up individual tea bags. read more

Jelmoli is a beautiful department store located in the famous Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. In addition to selling luxury women's collections from Burberry, Escada, Herve Leger, Diane Von Furstenburg, Karl Lagerfeld, and Missoni. Jelmoli also has an enormous women's shoes department, an extensive cosmetics selection, and an impressive sports/athletic wear/outdoor gear on the fourth floor. The Food Market on the underground level is one of my favorite places to shop while visiting Zurich. It is simply food hall heaven! They have several restaurants such as Nippon Sushi, Backerei Buchmann, The Market Grill, and La Bottega but the pièce de résistance is the cheese humidor which is overwhelming with the smell of gorgeous ripened and unique cheeses. They have over 200 cheeses which are kept at a constant temperature of 14 degrees Celsius with 90% humidity. The Movenpick wine cellar is across from the cheese humidor. There is also fresh produce, juices, flowers, meat, and fish. There are hard-to-find food items from around the world. This is a great place for a quick bite or to find an unique ingredient to use at home. On the third floor is a housewares department in addition to a restaurant and a bar.
