But I`ll totally come back, for warm or active wear, it`s just the coolest store with prices beyond compare!

The gear selection mirrors REI well, but there's a fuller clothing line, especially at the more casual end --- and I still haven't figured out the kid's fishing pool. A touch of Cabela's, perhaps? The staff is helpful, and will happily break out their (sometimes rusty) English if need be. We mostly shopped in German, but once you start looking for books in English the conversations tend to follow suit. Picked up a new hostel liner for hut-to-hut hikes, didn't find the book we hoped for, and figure I'll be back next time I need some ski gloves.

The only thing is that Lidl doesn't stock certain items, like soymilk, peanut butter, whole-wheat pasta, or those lovely pie/tart wedges that I like to eat for dinner once in a while. But for the staples (and a little exotica not readily found in other stores--Mexican tortillas, American chocolate chip cookies, Schwäbisch Maultaschen, Swedish oat cookies, American marshmallows), this place is great! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!…read more This Lidl has the absolute worst customer service from both employees and the managers. Living in Switzerland for over 9 years this place is by far the worst I have experienced! I shop here often because they have good selections and "Aktionen" items and in general the prices are relatively inexpensive compared to the bigger Swiss supermarket chains like Migros and Coop. But for some inexplicable reason the employees and managers working here are exceedingly rude and unhelpful. Most of the time I put up with it and just not ask for any assistance from anyone. I pay for everything with Apple Pay or TWINT on my iPhone. On most days I also carry some cash as a backup. Today while I was shopping I noticed my phone had ran out of battery. Unfortunately I left the house in a hurry and forgot to take my backpack with the backup cash inside. I walked around until I found a Lidl employee (whom I've never seen at this Lidl before) and asked if it's possible to charge my phone somewhere just for a couple of minutes only for the purpose of making the payment on the groceries I already picked up. He seemed visibly annoyed but looked around behind displays for a plug. Then I said I don't have a cable and asked if maybe someone who works there does. He said there is one iPhone charger upstairs in the office but it's very inconvenient for him to charge my phone there. I apologized for causing his inconvenience and thanked him profusely for his help. He punched the code at the personnel door and disappeared behind it with my iPhone in hand. He came back less than a minutes later and said it is not possible as "This is not a service we provide!" I was a little taken aback as I'm obviously just asking him for help and not expecting it to be a typical service provided by Lidl. I calmly explained to him that I have been shopping at this Lidl store for many years since it opened at this location. This is the only time this situation has ever occurred while I'm shopping here. I'm asking for a favor not expecting a service. Coincidentally, at the same moment, the manager walked by and the employee quickly said something to the manager. The manager looked at me with disdain, rudely threw up a hand and said absolutely not before walking away. I put down my basket with the groceries inside on top of a stack of cases of beer and walked out of the store taking a little comfort in the thought that it would take him longer to put back all the items than to charge my phone for a couple of minutes. NEVER SHOPPING AT THIS LIDL AGAIN...EVER!!!

We were on the hunt for a wardrobe as flats don't seem to have a lot of closets, if any at all, and found a sizable amount on the ground floor of Brockenhaus. I'd say the prices ranged anywhere from 300 to 1000 CHF, depending on quality and such. While we didn't purchase anything given that we don't yet have a flat, we 'filed' away what we would like when we do have a place to put it in, so, Brockenhaus, we'll see you again!

This is a huge Hugo Boss retail store located in the shopping center of Zurich. The store is…read morecomprised of four floors, which are efficiently organized by the gender and each of the labels of the Hugo Boss group (Boss Black, Orange, Hugo, etc.). They were having a men's Boss Orange sale downstairs, so we decided to have a look. Zurich having recently received the distinction of being the most expensive city in the world, and our comparison being the US, we found the original retail prices to be marked up, probably about an upwards of 20%. But Hugo Boss doesn't go on sale very often in the US, and at a 50% discount, it was worth picking up a few things that we hadn't seen in the US. We were largely ignored for most of the time we spent in the sale section, but the employees were friendly and helpful once we sought their assistance. The store just seems to get bigger and bigger as you ascend each floor, so it's worth a visit, even just for the window-shopping value.

Wow! This is coop on speed! This shop has literally everything: their produce section is amazing…read moreand they have a lot of bio options. The shop also contains a cheese shop (inside the shop) where they sell 180+ cheeses. On top of that, they sell dry aged beef. Not the type to cook with all these gorgeous products? No worries: they also sell a wide variety of ready made snacks and meals (fancy anti-pasta: check!), they even sell fries so no need to smell up your house next time you need a carb fix. Or just grab some chocolates from their huge wall of Lindt chocolate, they even sell packages geared for tourists - easy to take abroad as a gift. The liquor department is huge, I love the fact that they have a very extensive selection of smaller bottles of wine. Often these mini bottles are filled with crappy wine but here I found good quality Barolo and Amarone so a single girl can't complain! Another plus is that between all the premium stuff, they still sell their own "prix-garantie" line which is the lower priced house brand so you don't need to spend a fortune if you don't want to. This is easily my favorite coop in Zurich, the fact that it comes with easy parking (not free but where is there free parking in Zurich?) makes it a must-go.

The first time I was trying to buy hard liquor for a party, I walked around the store a bunch of times and couldn't find it--the wine section only sold wines! Then I realized that the liquor was outside in the front, at a kiosk-looking thingie. It also took me a while to figure out how to use the Coop passabene. If you sign up for the free Coop Supercard membership, you can pick up a green bar code scanner, scan all your purchases as you put them in your cart, and then get into a special line to check out without having to put all your groceries on the conveyor belt. Just hand the scanner to the checker, and BAM, you're done! (Well, you also have to pay.) It's fun to scan and quick to check out. They also have full-size plastic bags for free at the checkout, unlike the dinky little flimsy ones at Migros. Very important in a country that makes you bring your own grocery bags or pay CHF 0.30 per paper bag. ;)
