Now that I have visited the office several times, I feel like I can provide an informed review…read more I've had an initial screening with x-rays, a cleaning with root planing and scaling (if you just shivered a little, that was the correct reaction), filled a cavity and replaced an old filling, and got fitted for a night guard. I am not a great patient; I have anxiety about visiting the dentist. It isn't irrational - I got this way after a lifetime of experiences that don't need to be recounted here. Just wanted to say I'm not crazy, I'm just a little broken. Because of this, I don't go to the dentist very often. I take really good care of my teeth and gums and hope for the best. I knew that I had a filling that needed to be replaced, though, so I've been on the lookout for a provider. I had one, but they kept saying I had a phobia and I know this might be a small thing, and maybe for me it was simply an excuse to not go, but I don't have a phobia. I have anxiety. There's a huge difference. Anyway. The office is on Sandy, in a beautiful blue house with big windows and a sign that says, "new patients welcome". I drive by it all the time, so I had many chances to be reminded and think about it. It took a year or two, but I finally called and made an appointment. They fit me right in for an intake. Great covid precautions in place, not too many patients in there at one time. It's a small practice, so you're going to see the same handful of people every time. For me, that is essential. Trust - it's a real thing and its hard to build when the office has a huge staff. The first appointment was fine, I knew there would be some poking but no heavy machinery. Every time the doctor said my gum gap was more than a 3 I died a little on the inside because I knew it meant some intervention was coming my way. Sure enough - gotta get those gum pockets cleaned out, fill a cavity, replace that filling (the one I could see was deteriorating and I don't know - I hoped would magically get better while I slept?), and get a night guard before I ground my teeth down to smooth stones. Everyone was so nice, explained things in detail, and made sure I understood the plan. I left dreading the next appointment, honestly, but at least I felt like I could make it through. The two appointments for the root planing and scaling also went very well. I'm a red head and studies have shown that we are extra in many ways, the pertinent one being that we need more anesthetic when getting procedures. I had several shots, which in themselves were unpleasant. The cleaning, though, once I was numb, wasn't too bad. I really enjoyed the conversation (my half of it was mumbled) and the time went by fast. Today I had the cavity filled and the other filling replaced and I was a MESS. Just a mess. Shaking, crying, having a really hard time keeping it together. And it was all me, there was nothing happening to make me upset or uncomfortable except for the wild ride going on inside my mind. I hate being this way, and I'm working on it. But it's hard. Dr. Agee and the assistants, and the receptionist, and even the dog know that I'm struggling and they make it as easy as they can. They wait, and they give me space and tissues, and a towel to squeeze. They tell me I can stop them any time I need to, and I did. Then, when it was time to get back in there, Dr. Agee fired up that drill and took care of it like he was working on a formula car in a race pit. The part I really had a hard time with went by in a blink, and I am so grateful for that. The nightguard fitting was so easy to do it doesn't even need to be talked about. Let me wrap up this long review by saying that they are stuck with me now. I know them, I trust them, I will come back (regularly, not just every couple of years). If you're nervous and would like to talk to me about this, send me a message and I'll be happy to describe my experience. If that helps, I'm here for you. I think this practice would be good for just about everyone, the nervous and the not nervous. These are good people providing important service in a gracious way. I'm so glad to have found them.

I have a huge fear of Dentists and drilling, let me just put it out there. After one experience…read morewhere a dentist could not get me numb, which resulted in several attempts to drill, screams, then another shot of Novocain - then same thing ax's 4, I'm literally petrified. Even teeth cleaning is painful for my super sensitive gums and teeth. Jennifer is the best dental hygienist and I will not see anyone else. Ever. She knows my sensitivity and fears and does everything to make the process pain And stress free. She puts a numbing paste around gums of sensitive spots, let's me wear the heavy leaded vest during my cleaning which acts like a weighted blanket to calm me. Genius! Constantly checks in to see how I'm doing, if I need a break. She is so caring and expertly skilled that I choose the dentist office based on where she works. While I've gone to Portland Dental Works for 20 years, I've just started seeing Dr. Afshar who is very kind, straight forward, patient and provides very detailed and easy to understand treatment processes. To date, he has not performed any dental work, just exams. Unfortunately two of my crowns have to be replaced so appointments have been scheduled to start the process. I'll update my review once this has occurred. This office is closed on Fridays but I've never had any issues with getting call backs and have found the current and previous receptionist to be friendly, prompt in returning calls, and helpful when scheduling appointments. Once when I had to cancel appointment with less than 24 hours Notice due to an emergency they charged me $35. I understand the need for cancellation fees because it's a full hour where they could not bill for a service and could have had another client. When I explained the emergency, they removed the charge. During Covid-19; they are taking all precautions and I felt safe being in the office and having my teeth cleaned. And felt so good afterwards! I have them cleaned every 4 months and was scheduled in March so had to delay, and have never gone that long. They are covered by my individual Met Life insurance plan; I actually made sure they were in Network before purchasing the insurance.

I cannot believe this quack dentist is still in business. I had 3 failed crowns (all of them from…read morehim) and an infected implant that had to be removed, costing me over $15,000. (and a lawsuit against this guy, which I won). He tried to blame me! he is a master at gaslighting. See my review from 2019. Now - 6 years later, the one implant I did keep is failing. My dentist said it was placed too close to the edge of the bone, so there is zero bone left. I am not surprised. THIS GUY NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN. He clearly doesn't know what he is doing. Stay away!
