The message on my voice mail confirming the appointment stated that my portion would be $39. Upon arrival, my out of pocket was increased to $59. When the exam was finished, I was required to pay $185. I was advised that Dr. Wallent decided that I needed a medical exam which was not covered by my Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. I have never had a medical problem with my eyes nor was I advised that the fee would increase dramatically. Back in Ohio where I am from looking at the health of the eyes was a standard part of the eye exam which was covered in full by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Ohio. During my time as Director of Investigations for the Summit County Prosecutors Office in Ohio, we worked on insurance fraud cases regularly, so I am familiar with the form and structure of how they work. This particular type of overcharge is a classic example of "Bait and Switch". A truly insidious example of ripping off the consumer. My plans are to file complaints with Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, and the The North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry. I look forward to these various agencies looking closely at the billing practices of The Eye Center where they may find thousands of cases of over billing, insurance fraud and Criminal Theft by Deception. I would not recommend The Eye Center under any circumstances. This review will also be posted on Google and Yelp.

It was the 1st true contact lens fitting I've had and I've been wearing contacts for over 30 yrs! Next up.. went next door for glasses. I had such a great experience there too! Sue (or Susan) patiently helped me pick out the most awesome Oscar frames. I got the works since they were acquired by VSP and that's my insurance. I got a great deal on some stellar frames, progressive and transitions lenses. Super happy!

I had trouble putting my contacts in (probably because I felt rushed) so they said they could not provide me with a prescription but I would need to pay for the next visit today so I could come back and try again. I explained that I don't know when I would have another time to come back since I just started a new job. I asked if I could just pay for the eye exam and not the contacts so I could reevaluate my decision to get contacts. She said that I would have to pay for the trial lense as well as my next appointment which is ridiculous. I will be working with my insurance company to get my benefits/money refunded for this horrible experience.

I had an appointment for an eye exam with Chad Tisdale, Optometrist. I requested that my eyes not…read morebe dilated due to the fact that I could not drive home (an hour away) safely if my eyes were dilated. I only have vision in one eye and have limited peripheral vision and depth perception. Therefore, driving is already difficult enough without dilation. Upon requesting that my eyes not be dilated, I was told that Chad was a "stickler" about dilation and I would need to be rescheduled. Mind you, I was never told that there was a "dilation requirement" when I scheduled the appointment. After speaking with a supervisor, I was told the same thing. I asked to speak with Chad. From there, things went from bad to worse. Chad walked into the exam room and asked in a rude tone; "What's the problem?" He never said "Hello" nor did he introduce himself. I explained my concerns about driving home safely and he said that I could reschedule and come back when I had someone to drive me. I explained that I had an eye doctor for over 20 years who respected my request to not be dilated due to my safety when driving. Chad replied: "Maybe he is a better doctor than me." Needless to say, the office could have requested my records from my previous eye doctor in CT, but clearly the practice doesn't care about my well being, my vision or my safety. Chad said that he had a solution. He asked me to reschedule and to come back when I had someone to drive me home. While that may have seemed like a viable option to Chad, I am a single woman, new to the area and I don't have anyone to drive me. This doesn't take away the fact that once my eyes are dilated, I won't be able to see clearly for several hours. However, my physical safety was obviously not a concern for Chad. He insisted that he had a "liability" to ensure my eye health. This is untrue. He could have documented that I refused dilation and therefore he is not liable. It's really as simple as that but his ego held sway. To say that Chad was rude and arrogant would be an understatement. His downward communication style spoke of his lack of confidence and his inability to listen to a patient's concerns. His rigidity and abhorrent bed side manner leaves a lot to be desired in a provider who is allegedly a "professional." While I knew that his education and licensure were less than an opthalmologist, I never expected his professional conduct to be so haughty. I definitely would NOT recommend Chad Tisdale or Wilmington Eye for your vision needs. You might get blindsided by an optometrist who refuses to make accommodations for individuals with a visual disability. You would be better off having your dog examine your eyes.

The staff there was amazing. Front desk charmers offered a variety of drinks while Shelby fixed my sunglasses. She said it was a quick fix and it was. I was given an eyeglass case, cleaner, and a tote bag. Amazing! When I need new glasses or an exam, I will make a beeline here. Swell has been open 8 years and I never noticed it. Spread the word.

Easy parking. Cool office. The absolute best selection of frames in the area (unless you want boring frames that every other store has). Nice people. And, of course, a very knowledgeable optometrist! Dr. Scibal is a great! He takes his time and thoroughly explains everything. I honestly think he has a bit of teacher in him because he wants to educate you and does it in a way a non-optometrist can understand. Alanna in the optical shop is also great. She really listened to what I was looking for in a pair of glasses and offered great choices! She offered her opinion without any intention of swaying you. She explained the prices and insurance thoroughly and she knows her facts. I highly recommend this place! Wait until you hear the music they're playing in the room you're in. Very very cool!
