The contract and costs were very expensive and something we were reluctant to agree to. There was pressure from the studio staff along with incentive dates to commit and sign a contract. We signed up and locked into expensive pricing. After only a few weeks of attending, I began researching alternatives to the class as it felt like an overpriced dance party. It didn't feel like a martial arts class. It felt like a way to run kids out of energy. We wanted the class to teach our kids skills in a more traditional setting. I found the pentjak karate club online and through word of mouth discovered they offered free trial classes. We took advantage of the karate clubs free classes and gave our child the opportunity to choose for themselves between the two. The choice was easy for them and a relief to me as the overstimulating environment at taekwondo was a lot to take in. The pentjak studio in Stillwater is nothing like the cookie cutter taekwondo and karate classes offered throughout the capital region. The club is excellent and it feels like a family run business with an owner who cares. Jim loves his students, treats everyone like family and it shows. The Instructors, once students themselves, grew to love the program and pushed themselves to become more. They've created a kind, compassionate and very real group of respected teachers. Most instuctors have other family members also in the program which is really awesome to see and it's contagious! Together this group under Jim's direction have crafted a school that fits all ages and types of children. We went from having one child enrolled to now all four. They're different ages with different personaliites who have different needs. The team at pentjak studio give their best to make sure each child is getting the most out of each class. They don't guilt you when you can't make it to a class because life happens, there are no contracts, there isn't a sales pitch or a ton of expensive gear to buy and the pricing is extremely fair, reasonable and affordable. I'm happy we found the studio so we could offer this learning experience to all of our children. The school has that sort of hometown feeling which compliments the appeal of the surrounding areas. If you're looking for a class that makes you feel like family and also teaches you endurance, discipline and confidence this will be a good fit for you. The free classes are an amazing way to try it out and see if your child or even yourself likes the program. Don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to take the adult classes after watching how much fun it is for the kids. I think all the parents would agree you won't be disappointed.

My issue at first was that I could not find one that really seemed to take pride in the discipline. In other words, A lot of the places around here just want money and will have you sign long contracts and push "belts" at you. Saratoga Budo is not like that and I just pay monthly and train 3+ days a week. The other aspect I like is that this school is small, so we are all able to get training from a 3rd degree black belt, which does help our progression move along quickly. About the instructor: Sensei JP is extremely patient and understanding. I have been training with him for about a a year and I must say, it has been the best decision of my life. I have learned so much from him and his teaching style helps me strive to become the best. I have learned how to become more confident while also learning how to improve my spiritually as well. I sometimes make mistakes with how I approach a "move" but he never makes me feel like an idiot for not mastering it right away and is always able and willing to help. His teaching stye leaves open the opportunity to "self-learn". He does not force you to do things a certain way and allows you to figure out alternate ways to do things. Coming here is the best part of my week and I find myself constantly thinking about how I can improve and what I can learn. If you are looking for a jujutsu school I would recommend Saratoga Budo to anyone. You have nothing to lose. If I wasnt in grad school and didnt work full time, I would probably train more than I do. I came in not even knowing how to "roll". I progressed in such a short period of time all thanks to the masterful way Sensei teaches. 2019 update- still going strong. This place is still the best.

Most of the time, he was passive about the training. I've never thought Wushu is "his thing" until one day he visited CMAA. He has been so dedicated to the sport that he doesn't want to miss any training - very much proactive. As the result, he has excelled well and won gold medals in recent regional and national competitions. I have been trying to figure out the "hooks." First of all, the amazing coach. Lucas is the owner and instructor. He's Caucasian, but he knows Chinese martial arts no less than Chines athletes. He studied in China for a few years and is able to read the Kong Fu code book that most Chinese could not even comprehend. Above all, he knows how to teach. He motivates not pushing. He paces each student's progress based on individual readiness. He not only teaches moves, but ethics and discipline. My son constantly paraphrases the words Lucas uses, like "early is on-time, on-time is late, and late is unacceptable...""virtuosity is doing common things uncommonly well..." The training facility is new (a year and half) and tastefully decorated. The schedule is flexible and you can find proper time slots easier than many other schools. The students there are also amazing. My son is friend with almost every student; some of them are years older. In class, they help each other. After school, they are buddies. Considering after almost a year training at CMAA, my son is still so crazy about Wushu, Lucas must be doing something right!

This is not like all the CrossFit hype and gimmicky gyms out there, this is pure physical improvement, strength and preparation. The group training classes are energetic and can be very challenging if you push yourself, but the beauty of the workout is that you can take any of the exercises at your own pace. I loved that people of all physical levels can be in the same class and really get a great workout. Additionally, their Krav Maga self-defense offering is the best upstate NY has to offer. Marc D. is a former Army Ranger and has been training law enforcement, athletes and people of all ages for a very long time. He truly is an expert in his craft, not to mention quite a funny, personable guy. Their active shooter training program over the summer with the Saratoga County Sherrif's department was incredibly informative and I obtained many helpful tips that I can quickly apply in a life-or-death situation. If you want to transform your body, as well as, learn the best self-defense training out there (i.e. Krav Maga), definitely check out K2Strong. Krav Maga is not a "pretty" martial art...it's practical. It's an Israeli system that focuses on street fighting skills and realistic, life-threatening situations (which you certainly hope to never be in). They also have fitness classes that focus less on the self defense and more on getting in shape. Either way, if you're a regular here, you'll get in shape. There are plenty of classes to choose from so any schedule can be accommodated.
