We were camping and where we were staying, there was only a fast moving river. We wanted to chill on our floaties and not worry about being pushed out to kingdom come. The place has a lot of tables and is kept up. I never saw workers so the fact that it was clean at the end of the day was nice. The people there were mixed meaning some were families, some were just young people there to have fun. Some looked seedy while others looked okay. All were there to have fun so don't let that keep you. There is a roped swimming area which is nice if you have little ones. Of course most people went on the other side (I did) because it was easier to swim. Off to the right there are kayak and paddle board rentals. I believe they were about $40 for the entire day. They even had a sailboat rental for $60 for an hour. I would definitely visit this place again if I were in the area.

Of course, you can always walk in for free or park a few blocks away and walk. This park borders the fern ridge reservoir and features tons of picnic tables with BBQs, a boat launch ramp, a small sand volleyball court, an area to dock boats, bathrooms, an unmonitored swimming area, and fun in the sun! If you want to host a BBQ or get together without needing a reservation this place is perfect. If you come in winter, low water reveals extra shoreline which can make for a fun day of treasure hunting, I once found a very wet phone here and was able to return it to it's owner. This is a particularly great place to start a run around the lake, you can go for miles without seeing another person or car.

This path system is expansive, well-maintained, and often bordered by beautiful river and creek views. As others have noted, there are some safety concerns as with other city parks, even as a white dude there are parts of this path I would not feel comfortable walking around at night alone. One time I had a dude I had never seen before in my life threaten to kill me on one of the bridges, not sure why, he just wanted to let me know that he could kill me if he wanted to. Weird. Obviously he was having a bad day so I gave him a wide berth. Still though, that doesn't take away what a useful and pretty transportation avenue this is especially during the daytime.

You're allowed to have your dog on the trail as long as it's leashed and that was great for us. There weren't a lot of people on the trail, probably because it was really hot and the lot is pretty small. The trail has a good amount of shade though which helped and it was quite peaceful. There are lots of birds in this area and it was a good stop for a quick dog friendly hike.

It's a nice drive out to Dorena Lake and this park is really easy to find. It sits right where Rat Creek enters the lake and has a large parking lot. When I went the boat launch was closed but it looks like you can do that here. I saw a few people fishing and the view itself is very pretty. The sparkling water with the trees surrounding it is really nice. Recently when I went there was a lot of broken glass scattered on the beach in all the areas I walked. I had my dogs with me and was a little nervous to hang out there for much longer. I definitely wouldn't want to be barefoot here and if you have kids, be careful. On a hot day it might be nice to come hang out here but if there's this much glass I would probably find somewhere else. There is normally a nice trail you can take around the lake but after the recent snow storm it's closed due to so much debris and fallen trees on the path. When it's all cleared out it will be great for walking and biking. It would be really nice to bring kayaks out here, there weren't any boats on the water when I went recently. There are bathrooms near the parking lot.
