When I first saw him, before he started his own salon, he gave it to me straight. After a gentle 'what can I do for you' and my response 'fix this', he told me that yes the haircut was awful and explained exactly where it had gone wrong and then talked me through the options. (1) a good yet short haircut now or (2) gradual fixing the mess and keeping it longish. Very quickly I knew he understood two things: (1) how to fix problems with a long term view, and (2) exactly what I wanted without giving me that exasperated 'I'm not god' look when I ask ridiculous things and without pushing the latest edgy style on me.
And can there be anything better when it comes to haircuts?
Since then I've been back 4 times, over about one year.
After getting possibly the worst haircut in history at Glamour or something in Bastille (top layer extremely short, base layer very long and wispy) every hairdresser since has insisted on keeping the ends healthy and thereby maintaining this awful shape, despite my saying I didn't like it. Herbert took one look and said, 'I'm only cutting the base layers, the rest needs to GROW' and I said 'but won't the top get dry?' and he said 'yes. but you need to let it grow first then keep it healthy later.'
So one year later, my hair has a great shape and its healthy. So I know that he knows what he's talking about and really trust his advice. I don't colour my hair, but I suspect he might be really good at that so I am tempted.
Plus he's just a pleasure to be around, it's nice to have your hair cut by someone who loves what he does and cares about it. He always remembers me, even if 4 months go past. The salon is nicely decorated and in a nice street, he serves nice healthy tea, uses good products and there is a velib station opposite, so it is easy to get to.
Highly recommended.
