Actually, it's full of foreign tourists as well, this being York, all wanting a slice of classic, rugged British outdoor wear. Brands include Barbour - of course - Viyella, Magee and Loake. They can literally fit you out from top to toe, from shoes or boots and socks to classic Christy and Olney hats and caps. The nice thing is that the staff are very friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable, and the prices actually pretty good for this sort of lifetime-lasting quality. The shop is quite small, but a great place to browse. They also do a mail order service.

A cut above the rest really, and I end up going in far too often and spending too much!

There are some really nice cafes (such as the Italian one at the bottom entrance of the Westgate store). It does open seven days a week but most of the shops tend to be closed on a Sunday so I would recommend going Monday to Saturday

I think the thing that sets Greenwoods above the rest is their formal hire wear, which has now been re-branded as the 1860 Formal Hire. As a family we have Hired suits for two weddings where my husband was Best Man and required top hats and tails. Not only where the suits of excellent quality and a reasonable price but fit well too.
