Jason's grandparents have enjoyed their cupcakes before, so expectations were already pretty high... and somehow they still managed to exceed them. Jason requested a carrot cake for his birthday, and all his dad told Smallcakes was, "Carrot cake, golf theme." Smallcakes absolutely understood the assignment. This cake was GORGEOUS. Every little golf detail was so thoughtfully done, and it looked almost too good to eat! Seriously the sandpit and grass... just wow. (Keyword: almost.) Now let's talk about the icing... because I genuinely have not stopped thinking about it. Im SO picky with icing, I would happily eat it straight from the container with absolutely zero shame. It was rich without being overly sweet, perfectly smooth, and somehow managed to make an already incredible carrot cake even better. Every bite was moist, flavorful, and downright dangerous. (Side note pull out of fridge a little before eating). We're honestly a little heartbroken we're only visiting because I had every intention of trying half the cupcake display too. Unfortunately, we still have a mountain of birthday cake left. ...Then again, challenge accepted. If you're anywhere near Pensacola and need a cake for a birthday, celebration, or just because it's Tuesday and life is hard (which would be me at least 2x a week) do yourself a favor and stop by Smallcakes. I would think a teenager in high school could take an order change. I just got off the phone with the business development manager making excuses and eventually yelling at me. Unbelievable. Been going here for 30 years and will never go back because of that human and the lack of customer service. J's bakery used to be a wonderful place with nice people who worked there.

We also shared like four food items. The pull-apart monkey bread was sweet and dense and delicious. Don't order this if you're alone. You'll need help to finish it. Got a creme filled pull pastry thing. That was nice. Flakes for days. This was no rough puff. For the chocolate croissant, also known as a pain au chocolat. Again, very flakey, very buttery, the perfect touch of sweet chocolate. And a savory, massive scone. Bacon and chives, I think. Also very good. Crumbly. Overall, I was very surprised. There certainly wasn't anywhere like this in Pensacola when I lived here. This place is a quality bakery that could easily be found in a medium-sized city.
