About once a month, Kohl Mansion hosts musical performances (chamber concerts) in the Great Hall, a very intimate setting nothing like a symphony hall. Think of a Victorian era sitting room/parlour with a gloriously high ceiling and this is what you get - musicians on a slightly raised stage in front of a (non-operational) fireplace, and just several rows of seats surrounding the stage on 3 sides. I felt like I was enjoying my favorite Beethoven string quartet in a Beauty-and-the-Beast setting. You know what I'm talking about - that scene with the Beast sitting in front of the fireplace w/ the doggy footrest? Concert performances start at 7pm, but their resident musicologist, Kai Christiansen, gives a pre-concert talk at 6pm. If you are under 30, you are really in for a treat in the form of a generous discount - their "Gen Y & Z" discount tickets are only $15, compared to $45 for adult and $42 for senior tickets. To my fellow under-30 yelpers... get on this before you make it over the 30+ hill!! The parking lot fills to capacity with concert-goers so I recommend arriving no later than 6:30pm to ensure you get a parking spot. Complimentary refreshments are served after the concert - e.g. wine, cheese, charcuterie, fruit & other finger foods. One of the best refreshment spreads I've ever seen to be honest...without sounding too gluttonous. ;) You can meet and mingle with the musicians at this post-concert reception. So glad I found this place. Can't wait to be back in the coming months.

We had about 90 minutes to kill so had a look about, There were lot's of tents with games set up for children to play, a mini market selling crafts and some food stalls but I saw a severe lack of Salsa! lol. Maybe I shouldn't have taken the name too seriously as I was expecting to be able to get some Chips and Salsa to eat or even see some Salsa Dancing but no. There was also a big tent set up for Tequila tasting but there was not one drop of Tequila in sight or any indication when the event might start. I witnessed about 5 minutes of Music in the main square where a very large group of people had gathered waiting but then... nothing. For 10 minutes we stood there thinking ''well, everybody else is here, there must be something big about to happen''. So we waited... and waited... Still nothing. We eventually got bored and headed to The Sandwich Spot instead.

The ticketing system kept things efficient, even if you're constantly grabbing more. The system includes trading tickets for hearty plates of sausage, sauerkraut, potato salad, and massive steins of beer. The food was a highlight, especially the massive, perfectly salted pretzel paired with salami, cheese, and tangy mustard. For dessert, the warm apple turnover with vanilla ice cream was the perfect finish. I even stepped out of my comfort zone to try sauerkraut for the first time, and it was a great experience. The event was well-organized, featuring proper restrooms rather than standard porta-potties and a strong security presence that made the environment feel safe and relaxed. It's wonderful that our city hosts this every year, and I'm already looking forward to going back.

I would encourage anyone who is interested in bright, lively and very well-done chamber music to take the opportunity to travel to Brisbane, which is located about 5 miles south outside the city limit of San Francisco. The price for tickets is a value and anyone would be hard pressed to find such good quality music for so reasonable a cost. Recently, my husband and I enjoyed a stunningly beautiful chamber music concert, performed by the New Esterházy Quartet, and will be going to Music of 17th Century Spain on the 18th of February. I'm looking forward to that performance and future performances. Kudos should also go to Kevin Fryer, Artistic Director of the Music at Mission Blue concerts. Kevin, a musician in his own right and creator of stunning hand-made harpsichords, brings his own love of great music, fine instruments and high caliber musicians to these wonderful concert offerings. The Mission Blue Center is in a magnificent location on the Southeast side of Brisbane, overlooking a canyon. Inside, the intimate performance space is perfectly suited for exceptionally enjoyable listening to chamber music played by very fine musicians. Parking is adjacent to the Center and is free.

I attended on Sunday and had a wonderful experience, as the festival had plenty to offer. Vendors, church tours, cultural entertainment including traditional dance and live music (Mythos Band bringing the energy on the main stage, and Aurora Mandolin Orchestra later in the afternoon), as well as a mythology play in the amphitheater with a charming set and performance by kids. Lots of food options, the place offering a main dining hall, a food court, a lineup of dessert booths, and a beer garden. Greek specialty dishes and sweet and savory treats like moussaka, spanakopita, gyros, baklava, and more. I ordered the pastitsio, my new favorite greek dish, and it was delish! This event was organized very similarly to the San Jose Greek Festival which I attended several months ago, with some of the same performers and vendors in Belmont. A lovely and detailed map and event program was provided online for convenience. Off site parking was available with free shuttles for guests. But free street parking was also easy to find in the vicinity, less than a ten-minute walk away.

I came at 7pm today and there was a line for the cafeteria. Since I had to work and was bringing back meals, I asked for 6 to go containers. The lady at the table organizing trays and plates flat out told me "No!" She then proceeded to ask me if I was really going to get 6 meals. I explained that I was picking up dinner for my colleagues and she finally gave me one tray and 6 containers. As a long time supporter, I have never had an issue with this and the volunteers or members are more than happy that I enjoy their food and support them. I got my meals and paid for them, but fail to understand why it was her business to ask who and how many ppl I am feeding and why she should deny me more than one to go containers. I have never had a bad interaction with the staff and they are usually super helpful or happily talk to me about their culture or food. Regardless of that one person, I did not let her ruin my experience. I picked up some delicious loukamades, moussaka, leg of lamb, Greek salad, spanakopita, pilaf, calamari, and chicken.

It wasn't until I traveled around to some other cities and other bars that I came to realize just how good we have it. A great karaoke experience is all about having a large library to work from and having a KJ who knows how to manage a queue. The latter is arguably the most important thing. Nobody runs a queue quite like Dan: he makes sure newcomers get worked in before people who have already gone once get to their second song...to a point. He also makes sure people who have gone once don't just get pushed down the queue forever as people filter in. WildStyle is also amazing for hosting your private or semiprivate events- my 50th Birthday party was a tremendous success and a memory I'll always cherish thanks in large part to all the effort and help provided by Dan. One of my attendees remarked that it was the best karaoke party he'd ever attended (and he'd been to a lot of them). Find out where WildStyle is hosting and check out a show!
