Oddly, I can only buy garden items in person at a garden centre but am forbidden to buy them at a Dollarama or big box store while I'm there. Uh okay, fine. With all the craze in the plant community, downtown big box stores are selling out of orchid mix and giant potting soil bags for online pickup. Local garden centres rarely carry stock online and aren't too helpful on the phone either, so you'll have to pay them a visit to pick it up. East End Garden Centre has all you need and more to get your outdoor urban garden started. They have lovely wooden trellises, stones and soil at reasonable prices. I picked up a few bags of veggie soil for only $5.99 for a 30L bag, a better deal than the commonly found Miracle-Gro in big box stores. Potting soil that is usable indoors is $1 more. All the reasons to shop local! If you don't have the room or time to start your seedlings, you can pick them up for $4. I see strawberries, peas, but no tomato plants yet. I came on a Sunday; it was bustling but not packed, so social distancing is possible. I browsed their houseplant section indoors briefly, not too attractive and slightly more expensive than other local shops I frequent. The drawing point continues to be their outdoor gardening and landscaping items, but if you're lucky to spot something nice, you can pick up a houseplant baby as well.

Everything from storage, patio chairs, lounge chairs, outdoor dining tables, and more. The manufacturers this store has picked used great materials not usually found in typical outdoor furniture; materials that give color and texture. Lots of modern design with a traditional feel, if that makes any sense. If you are looking for great outdoor furniture this is the place. Just make sure you leave the cash at home and bring the plastic as some things can really hurt the bank.

When I went back to return it, I was told by the store's co-owner that they don't warrantee the product and that I was basically out of luck. Funny how this was not mentioned at the time of purchase, nor is it indicated anywhere on the receipt. No offer was made to contact the manufacturer on my behalf, no suggestions on repair services, no indication that the product could possibly have been faulty. This sort of lackluster, 'sux to be you', lazy customer service drives me crazy and is the reason people are abandoning independant retailers in favour of big box stores. Be forewarned: if you think you're paying top dollar for quality products and a safe purchasing environment, think again.

When setting up my new apartment, I visited the store in Leaside on Wicksteed Avenue and Fernanda Salomao Costa helped me choose the most beautiful black out sea green drapes and the Anola Area Rug for my living room area. Fernanda is a person I will go back to see and have purchased many other items from her since we met. Fernanda is pleasant and efficient. The suggestions she made were excellent and I appreciate the time she took with me to choose the right pieces for my decor. She is the reason I will return to Urban Barn ! Thank you, Jude

Descriptions like "rustic" or "country living" make me uneasy. Fortunately, Urban Barn is decidedly modern, free of farmyard smells, and boasts great customer service. A knowledgeable and experienced staff member, Helen, helped us navigate the mysterious and unstable world of sofa choices. Who knew there were so many details to consider in the purchase process? Helen at Urban Barn does. She's mastered an expert line of questioning that can lead you from couch confusion to confidence. Arm height, length, tufted or non-tufted, leather or textile, pet/child friendly, budget conscious, straight-backed or tilted, and level of cushioning support...you'll need to consider these aspects (and a few more) before narrowing down your choices. Fortunately, the education process requires a lot of sitting down, relaxing, and putting your feet up, which is really the ideal way to make an important life decision. I will definitely be back here. The product quality and prices are quite good overall and I highly recommend you visit - this is one shopping destination that won't leave you tired or on your feet for very long!
