The first few years of a child's life are such important learning years. When we moved to the area,…read moreit was imperative to us that we find a preschool with warm, caring adults in a christian community that support development and an educational curriculum, while allowing children to have fun and explore with curiosity. We found all of that (and more!) at Smyrna Christian School. SCS has helped our child learn how to play, work together, and establish great friendships. They have continuously provided materials/activities that interest our child (and challenge her!) They have encouraged our child's efforts (which has truly aided in adding to her confidence.) They set clear limits for behavior (which is appreciated!) I love always receiving our child's drawings, writings, and crafts at the end of every week. They encourage parental involvement (which goes back to the whole "community feel") and welcome parental participation with class parties. How beautiful is that?! I truly cannot say enough GOOD about this establishment. Before we found SCS, our only-child went to a "glorified daycare" preschool and for so long, we didn't know how much it was hindering our child. It wasn't until we moved and enrolled at SCS that we saw our child turn a complete 180 in every aspect of her life that we realized what EXCELLING truly meant. I am forever grateful for SCS (and my only complaint would be that I can't keep our child here for kindergarten, too!)

Every morning we are greeted with a smile and a "Good Morning" from Miss Jodi in the office, and all along the hallways my kiddo happily says hello to all the teachers. They're all very friendly and engage your child in conversation which makes them feel seen and heard, and important. She just loves talking with them on the way to her classroom. Her teacher is Miss Vickie, and she just adores her. She is kind and attentive, and a wonderful human being. My daughter has learned SO much this year, and she loves doing it! They learn Spanish, colors, numbers, writing, and she even comes home telling me about the fun centers they have in class, and how silly George Washington's wig is! I love how happy she is there, and how much she's grown in her independence and knowledge. I'm convinced that a better school does not exist. Truly, it has been the biggest blessing for our child. I wish they taught kindergarten so we could stay!!

But once you've read the email (that allegedly started the downfall of this church) that the current leadership deliberately changed, to protect themselves and keep the money flowing.. you have to speak up. There is more going on behind the pulpit than you could ever imagine. What once was filled with the Holy Spirit is filled with deception to the congregation. Keep your eyes and heart open to what might truly be going on. Ask is this truly Christlike or is it a wolf in sheep's clothing. Is our current culture dictating the message or is the message changing the current culture. Time will truly tell. Continued prayers for humility and reconciliation which are powerful tools that God has graced all of us with.

In the last year, some of the most involved parents at Eakin pulled up stakes in public education and opted to shell out 10K to escape the increasing physical tensions and gaps as Nashville fails to invest in public education. I digress....so, you'll be paying more for education than you thought you would!! And SBA is a good balance between the crazy expensive USN (20K) and your kid joining either the Bloods or the Crips in 4th grade (I jest....sort of). The school is Catholic, but truly more accepting of other religions than Catholic schools use to be. They have mass on Holy Days and religion class, but often religion class is writing notes to sick school mates or families. The high points of the school are location, curriculum and and administration. The math program is particularly strong and they have opportunities for kids to do advanced work in smaller classes. The school is small and mostly clean. The small footprint makes it hard to have too many large group meetings. Areas that could use attention IMO are gym/health, getting rid of some of the old school teachers and the aftercare program needs an overhaul with some actual activities. Parents are generally pretty involved and the school does a really good job of having a unique identity in spite of the fact that kids come in with Vandy parents from many neighborhoods. They offer buses for a fee and a summer program as well. All in all this is a great school for a fraction of the cost of many other local private schools. The teachers and administration have a real 'can do' attitude and the kids seem to flourish is almost all arenas.

We visited many, many schools before deciding on SBA and we have never regretted our decision to enroll our children. They have many wonderful extra-curricular activities such as art, lego club, boy and girl scouts, cross country, volleyball, swim team and the list goes on. The staff, teachers and curriculum are absolutely stellar. Our children are excited about learning again! Plus, every grade level gets TWO outdoor recesses during the day which my kids love! They have had great transitions to a new school and have made many friends. The parents and staff are welcoming and there is a general sense that they are glad we are there and want our children to excel. If you are in the market for a K-8 school in Nashville, it just doesn't get any better than SBA.

A large part of me wants to stay silent--because it's easier. But another part of me knows I need to speak out, if only to warn other families. What we witnessed at FRCS wasn't just favoritism--it was a pattern of corruption that began at the top, with the newly appointed pastor, and trickled straight through the administration. At the center of this pattern was a husband-and-wife duo--both administrators--who, in the fall of 2024, devised a plan that directly benefited their child, while overlooking other students. We learned of this scheme through their own child. In the months that followed, their student worked to advance that scheme--lying, slandering peers, and creating a false narrative, all make that "advantage" seem genuine. Our daughter became a direct target of those lies. Classrooms full of students witnessed the behavior. When we brought our concerns to the principal--this student's father--he denied the possibility of wrongdoing. We escalated our concerns to the pastor, imploring him to look into even broader accusations of cheating, dishonesty, and ethical violations. We hoped someone in leadership would take a stand for what's right. Instead, after weeks of meetings, we sat in stunned silence at the 2025 graduation ceremony as this same student was honored--not with one, but two Christian character awards. We had done everything the right way. We remained private. We spoke respectfully. We went to the appropriate leaders. We presented clear concerns. And in return, it was completely dismissed. This isn't about awards. It's about integrity. It's about what it means to be a Christ follower, especially when no one is watching. FRCS had an opportunity to stand for truth. Instead, they chose favoritism. To be clear, we have a clean conscience before God. We didn't exaggerate. We didn't lie. We told the truth. And yet, we were met with denial and performative "resolutions" that resolved nothing. The damage done that day won't be forgotten--by us, by our daughter, or by the many students and parents who were just as stunned. The message FRCS sent was loud and clear: corruption will be rewarded if it comes from within the "church". If you have a student who excels academically, athletically or in any other way, know there is a high likelihood they will be overlooked for more favored students.

Covering grades from…read morek-6, the school encompasses a balance of excellent secular studies and fairly rigorous Judaic studies. Small class size and individual attention has been great for my 5 year old. A combination of 'centers' where a few kids work on the same subject as well as group instruction has not only helped his reading skills, but his interpersonal skills as well. But what really sets this school apart is the fact that it truly is a Community school. The Chabad rabbi sends his kids there and the Reform Rabbis send their kids there. The younger kids all daven together and the older kids can choose between a more liberal or a more traditional service. Last and best is the fact that the kids graduating from Akiva are eagerly snatched up by the prestigious Middle and High Schools in town who recognize the learning skills the kids take with them as well as the knowledge they have gained. For Jewish parents that desire a first class education and want their children to grow up to be imbibed with Jewish values and knowledge, it is a joy to know that Nashville is blessed to have a place this wonderful.
