Coming from the Bronx, it took awhile to find a barber in the capital region that I actually trust. A LOT of trial and error... Until one day I walked into Jay Allen and let Earl cut my hair. Now I don't trust anyone else. Precise, detailed, master of his craft. When I got married last August, only one person could be trusted with making me look my best on the happiest day of my life. Besides Earl, the store itself is very clean, very up to date. Plenty of big screen TVs to keep you entertained while you wait. The rest of the staff are all friendly and they acknowledge everyone coming or going regardless of who you're seeing. I STRONGLY recommend Jay Allen Barber Studio! I started using this barbershop when I moved to Albany in January 2015. Even though I no longer live in Albany, my 2 sons still come here (they still live in the area) and I come here when im in town visiting and need a cut. They have many master barbers here that can expertly cut any type of hair. My sons have a standing appointment every other Sunday, but even if you need a cut at short notice someone there will accommodate you. Im dropping my son off at college today and wanted him to get a fresh cut. Our normal barber wasnt available but the owner, Jay Allen, said he would hook my son up. Very disappointing. I had an appointment at 6:00pm, wasn't greeted by any of the staff u til I finally got someone's attention 10 minutes after waiting. She said barber was aware of appointment and would be there. After 20 minutes of waiting and the barber still not there, I left. What a shame! read more

They may do good haircuts here, but poor service means I'll never find out. Here's why. I scheduled an appointment for the morning of my wedding day (and told them so on the phone). They booked me with Jason, right when the shop opened at 10:00. When I arrived, the shop was closed and no one showed up to open it till 10:19 (phone calls went unanswered). That person wasn't even sure which Jason I'd booked with, and finally, after making a phone call or two to figure it out, told me that Jason wouldn't be in today and that no one would be able to shave me till 11:00 "unless another barber comes in" (huh?). So the fact that I had an appointment meant nothing. I called Patsy's Barber Shop in Albany, where Damon fit me in as a walk-in and gave me an excellent shave. I called in saying I needed a quick buzz, funeral tomorrow morning that popped happen to pop up quickly out of the blue. I waited 15min. I'm talking my hair was maybe 3/4ths of an inch and I wanted a number 2 ran through the entire thing. Jamie took me sat me down and proceeded to absolutely tear my head ip, I'm talking it hurt getting a haircut from him and then he lined up the top of my head, I have a receding hairline so now it just looks bad. When he lined up the back it just felt like razors and now looking I have some small cuts where he lined up the back. Then I got sprayed like crazy with some spray, I'm talking I have 2cm of hair length and I my excuse of hair got sprayed like my girlfriends 3 foot long hair after her salon trip, burned like hell but it did smell decent I'll give him that. Got up and asked if I could pull off a shaved head because I did not like the haircut I got and he said "idk but it will be shorter" both laughed. Went to pay and before I went in I check the prices, 30 for a haircut and I'm like sure that's standard and I asked how much like I do every time I'm at a new place to see how they react to someone who comes in well put together and nicely dressed who seems to have money, didn't have time to change since I came from work got a haircut and was going right to the celebration of life. He said 40 and I just laughed inside and I gave him 100 and got my change and he looked annoyed that I didn't tip. So all in all, haircut hurt, wasn't smooth, hairline now looks weird and I didn't even know that was possible since I'm losing hair, got overcharged because how I dressed because I have money and got a glare when I didn't tip after getting overcharged. I tried this place for the first time today and it was great. I am from out of town and because my travel plans were moved up I had to cancel my appointment back home. I was in desperate need of a haircut before the holidays so I looked on Yelp and four Jay Allen Barber Studios. I booked a cut with Kevin and he did an excellent job. I was going for a new look and I showed him a picture and he was able to cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. Although I should warn potential visitors not all of the barbers accept credit card so make sure you have some cash just in case. I was lucky enough to have one of the 2 barbers that accepted credit cards. If I didn't live so far away I would definitely return. For those of you who may live closer I definitely recommend it for a great haircut at a reasonable price. read more

Went in for a haircut a few weeks ago. The guy greeting me brought me back and sat me down. His name was Tim. I asked him for a pompadour and he obliged as he began cutting. He seemed pretty attentive but had an unusual technique with the clippers that left my hair on the sides and back VERY uneven and wonky looking. The hair he cut with scissors was equally uneven. At first glance it looked ok but once I got home I realized how terrible it was. Dear lord it was a disaster. I waited a few days and figured I could deal with it but it was so bad that I was embarrassed and just wore a hat to cover it. I drove back over to Maxie's about a week later and got it "fixed" and cut properly. The difference was clear. This was a $25 mistake to go to Jay Allen and it's a mistake I hope others can avoid by reading my review. read more

I tried this place twice. My first time was good, my barber took patiences with my cut and taper/skin faded nicely. But when I asked him how much, he charged me $20 without tip. My friend on the other hand was charged $15 because it was his "first time". My friend walked up to his barber to pay him and he heard them talking about how much they charged me. I thought that was fishy about price fluctuation. But I end up giving them another chance. Then my 2nd visit a couple days ago, I went to another barber in the shop and he gave me a crooked fade, you can still see the line in my fade. He clearly didn't take the time to cut my hair. Relocated here to the area and did a walk in on Saturday morning with my son. And the brothas were all nice and very professional. Nothing bad to say. Charles took me right in with no problems and the salt n pepper guy next to him (sorry don't remember his name) cut my sons. Step up from your typical corner shop in the urban areas. Great place to get your hair cut. The barbers are cool, music is good, and they have at least 4 big HDTVs for watching ESPN while you get your hair cut. They also have an HDTV and PS4 in the waiting area. There's also an ATM right next door for those times I forget to bring cash. Unlike other barber shops they always have their AC/heat/climate control on and oh yeah... they are very good at cutting hair. read more

I've recommended this barber shop to a number of people for the past few years as the pictures they have posted on social media speaks volumes about the type of haircuts they're capable of doing. Yesterday my youngest son finally agreed to try them out since his regular barber was on vacation. He scheduled an appointment for Saturday morning and even arrived a few minutes early. When he entered the shop no one addressed him and he sat in their waiting area until his appointment. As I stated previously, he had a scheduled appointment and after waiting close to an hour, he decided to leave and again, no one spoke to him as he left. I've been a licensed hairstylist for more than 20 years and owned my own beauty salon and there was never a time when a customer entered my business and were not greeted with a smile or a hello.
