I love Java Jo's. I'm not really a coffee person, but this is somewhere that I actually order something from. I don't know if it's the adorable walk up window or the fact that I can walk there from my apartment, but the coffee tastes better/less bitter here. Today, I asked the girl for sweet recommendations, and she said any of the specialty drinks would be sweeter. I ended up getting an iced Carmel macchiato, and it was really good. I found this place in 2020 and have loved it ever since. It's the best coffee in the salt lake valley, I've tried everything! The employees have always been exceptionally nice and have memorized my order. There was a point when I would pull up to the window and my coffee would be ready...without even ordering! This is my favorite coffee shop in Salt Lake City. Their drinks are great, the staff is friendly, and you even get treats for your dog. My personal favorite is the love bug (a seasonal drink from a few years ago that you can still order), but I don't think you can go wrong with most of the options. You know this place is good because there is usually a double line up of cars waiting for fresh brew. The great news is that despite the line, they get your drink out fast and hot (or cold if that is more your style). First of all the blonde chick at the drive though was the most lifeless person lol she was rolling her eyes and was so awkwardly bland. Not one did we make eye contact nor did she crack a smile. Ordered two bagels and two coffees. Bagels are given cold, hard, and not cut. We back and asked if they could toast them and she said they don't own a toaster of any kind, and they "don't have and kitchen cutlery on property." Then gave me a single plastic knife. Like at least let people know that you don't toast or cut your bagels at least? Coffee was mid. Took way too long being the only customer, to be given cold garbage bagels and mid coffee. read more

After having really good coffee at Java Jo's other location, I stopped at this one, because I really wanted a frozen Mocha on such a hot day of hiking. Sadly it wasn't up to par as usual as is the case at other locations. It didn't have any flavor, or I should say barely any flavor. Every time I pass by Java Jo's, there's a line of cars into the street. After trying it, I can understand why. Java Jo's balances a classic menu with a creative and unique drink options. When I visited, they were extremely busy, but the wait wasn't as long as I expected. The service was friendly and they seem to have a decent number of regulars who talk to each other in their cars while waiting for their coffee. This location seems to foster a sense of community and I talked with three different customers while waiting. Even if you're not a regular here, you're treated as one. I especially enjoyed seeing how many dogs visit here. I don't have a dog, but this location seemed very dog-friendly. I ordered an iced americano which was good, but what made it great was the cold foam. I've never tried this combination, but it's quickly become one of my favorites. Java Jo's gets their cold foam exactly right, it's the perfect consistency and not overpoweringly sweet making it a great addition to balancing the bitterness of an Americano. I'm looking forward to revisiting and trying more of their menu! read more

Stopped by here during my short trip to Salt Lake last week. They have an interesting drive thru that almost looked like people couple enter it and get in line from either direction, however I didn't get to see this in action due to COVID. They also have a window you can walk up to to place an order. The barista was super friendly and answered my questions regarding their drinks since I hadn't been there before. The outside of the small shop was so cute and looked very welcoming! I got their Frozen Jo, and it was seriously good. Nothing too sweet and fancy, just an amazing frozen drink for a warm summer day in Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, I don't live in SLC so I won't be able to try this spot often to try out different drinks. I wish they had a cute little shop like this in Vegas! For how often my partner and I stop by this drive-through it's criminal that I haven't praised it on Yelp yet. The coffee is fantastic every time, the folks who work there are an absolute delight, and our shepherd gets his own treat whenever we come through. We've gone out of our way many times to get coffee here instead of elsewhere in the city and have never regretted it, even on busy days. As someone with just enough lactose intolerance to be a problem, I'm addicted to their lattes with oat or soy milk. Somehow they get those milk substitutes to foam up nicely and it's always delicious. My personal favorite is an oat milk latte with almond flavor added, but a lavender London Fog is always a treat when you don't need much caffeine! read more

My absolute favorite place for coffee in the United States. Years ago, like, more than 10, someone bought me a Kramer (like a Mexican mocha) from there and I fell in love. When I moved back to Arizona, where there is nothing but a Starbucks, I lamented the distance between me and that little coffee shack up on 1st Avenue. When I would come for a visit, that drive thru was one of the first things we'd hit. Once we freaked out because we couldn't find it, not realizing we were on the wrong Avenue. And I kid you not, in the back of my mind, when it was time to move back to utah, Java Jo's was on the list of pros. Ok, enough about my obsession with the place. Here is why. It started with the Kramer. Cinnamon spiced chocolate (think Abuelita) with espresso and steamed milk. Then, the Mountain of Mocha. Double chocolate, espresso, steamed milk. Frozen mocha, frozen chai, breves, soy and almond milk, and employees that seem to stick around for years. They are consistant, local and friendly, and in all the years I have been coming here, I have gotten a drink that was off ONCE. They give you a chocolate covered espresso bean with every order and I pretty much love everything about the little place. My drinks are my treats and I feel like a giddy little kid everytime I get to pull up and decide what I'm having. read more

finally tried out java jo's for the first time recently! been meaning to for the last year now. caffe expresso is my go-to for coffee in salt lake but i've always heard good things, plus it's a similar drive through only type of place, & it's good to switch things up every now & again. we came on sunday march 1st right before 5:00 pm & of course no one else was in line by then. i tried out a 24 oz frozen jo, which is just espresso & vanilla powder blended with ice. it was pretty good, not the most amazing drink i've ever had, but i did like it a lot! the location is in a gorgeous spot up in the avenues. the service was quick & friendly. it's a little bit pricier than caffe expresso, but i really liked everything else about it. they have a location in sugarhouse near east high & if i go back, it will probably be at that spot since I'm in that area a lot more, but this is a great location regardless! read more

Seriously the best coffee shop in town! I love this place and will sit through the lines (they always move very fast) to get my latte/coffee/etc every Tuesday morning (I can only splurge once a week). I have tried a lot of different things they have to offer on the menu and I love that it is always very well balanced, never bitter and never too sweet (which is really important for me) and the service is great. This place competes with the Einstein Bros Bagels down the block, and I hope that they drive the EBB out of business. What a great idea--devote the small lot to a few drive-through spaces and serve morning necessities ouf of a tiny shack. Actually, one lane is carhop service and one lane is drive-through. I'm checking "Yes" for "Wheelchair Accessible" because, presumably, you could roll your chair right up to the window, but this place sits on a hill, so be careful. I don't drink coffee, but I got a smoothie and a muffin here to complement my wretched bagel sandwich from Einstein Bros. Super-fast service--I waited less than two minutes even with two cars in front of me, and my smoothie was ready before I had finished paying. I wanted a scone, but they had only pumpkin left by 9 am on a Sunday. Get there early for scones! The smoothie was good, slightly too sweet, but they let me order a strawberry-banana version even though that combination isn't on the official menu. The reason I first came to Java Jo's is because they're open when I need coffee. The reason I keep coming back is because their drinks are consistent regardless of who is making it. Equally as nice are the baristas that are smiling and appear happy to be there. Suspicions confirmed when I got to the bottom 1/4 of the cup and met a nigh undrinkable, chalky sludge of cheap, cloyingly sweet cocoa mix flavor. Prices are a bit lower than you'd expect, but I'd pay another 50¢ gladly for some real chocolate syrup that actually mixed welll. Hot chocolate is made with water and powdered mix. i was a frequent regular, thoroughly enjoyed their drinks. it has however gone down hill within the last few months and my order never seems to be right. its not complicated and the only thing i adjust is to have it with oatmilk. but that seems to throw them off. today i had a drink with oatmilk, could have sworn no espresso was in my drink and it was a cup of iced oat milk. needless to say i'm sad, but i can't justify spending the money on a drink and tip for something so simple to be wrong. I'm local in the avenues. Been walking or taking a quick drive to this location for 3 years. This morning 8/24 at 9am the drive in serving lines were full and there was traffic so I quickly got out of the way and pull to a place on the side, in the side walk. Now I was blocked all ways. Traffic behind and constant cars pulling in. I got out of my car and walked to the window to let them know my situation and order so I could get out of the way. I patiently waited and tried to get in the car line. Finnally in the car line the server came out with my coffee and proceeded to agressivly lecture me on being in "the employee parking" and in the future to 'drive around the til there was space in the pull thru or block the street'. I tried to explain, again and again, my efforts and met with conflict and more directions on how to behave. I come to get coffee for the fun, an extra expensive treat, not for a one way conversation and lecture. Please, it would be nice to have a manager look into this bossy service. Your location has a great young man at 6am, so I will limit my visits to that time. read more

They've got the drive-thru coffee thing down PAT. I was in and out of there in like 30 seconds flat. I'm pretty sure I could have just rolled past the window without ever hitting the brakes and still gotten my coffee, no problem. Normally I'm not a fan of frozen coffee drinks, but it was a hot day and the Frozen Jo came highly recommended. Simple, smooth and not too sweet-- very nice. $4 for a small seemed a little steep, but it's The Avenues, I guess. I did appreciate the chocolate coffee bean on top. What? I haven't written a review of this place yet? How on earth did this happen? I've been going to Java Jo's for nearly 4 years, and I came here to update my review... to downgrade it, actually. However, it turned out I hadn't written one already... so here goes: Java Jo's was wonderful. Was. There is a reason I've been going there for 4 years. It's a great, fast, friendly place to get a decent latte at 6 AM. I work very early, so Java Jo's means a lot to me, and is probably largely responsible for my career seeing as I would have been fired long ago without their caffeinated help. A month ago, they would have gotten 5 stars. However, they changed something. The beans, the roast, something... and it just is not good anymore. At first, I thought it was me - I switched to soy - but alas, it's not that. Also, there is one guy who always gets something wrong... (gave me an iced latte... in the middle of a snowstorm? I didn't ask for iced. WTF??? Stuff like this happens with him all the time.) so if you're there and ordering from a tall, thin, red-haired guy, make sure you check your order before you leave. He's been there for a while, but the iced latte incident was the "straw the broke the camel's back" in many ways. I plan on going back in a bit... but I'm officially taking a break from my #1 commute coffee joint. Maybe they'll fix whatever the problem is in the meantime, in which case I'll update this review and write about all the other wonderful things about them like how great the rest of the staff is, especially Alex and Emily, who never get my order wrong! Until then, I'll be hunting for a different place as I'm tired of paying for bad lattes... as much as that pains me, because I really really really really liked Java Jo's before it went south recently. read more

Normally I don't take time to write these things, but a little irony that occurred earlier this week has me doing it anyways. I was standing for morning assembly at my child's school when a friend comes over with coffee (Java Jo's) in hand and I jokingly said "running a little late today are we?". To that she threw her hands up and began telling me how sick she is of the way the two lines are handled at Java Jo's and that she's over it and will not be going back. I then proceeded to tell her that I stopped going there not long ago for the same reasons. I sat and watched too many vehicles coming and going in the line next to me, that came after I was already in line, and I made the decision to stop the madness. I like my latte a couple times a week, but not enough to spend 10 minutes in a line of three cars and seeing 7/8 go through the other while I'm waiting. Yes, it's not the end of the world, I get that, but I also see I'm not the only crazy one out there. This isn't to antagonize you, and I truly hope you stay successful as local businesses are a great part of the community... but you've lost my business and also my friends. It's unacceptable to ask for a tip. That is not the way the gratuity system works, I feel pressured into giving a tip. There are multiple times where I have said no thank you and they acted offended. A tip is given when good service occurs, not when it is asked for. I will not be coming back because of this. read more

These guys are great. The staff is friendly and they remember you. I've been going there at least a couple times a week for the last 3 years (and a few weeks every day) and I think I've only ever receive the wrong drink twice... and they're really quick to fix it. Since these guys are really close to downtown, they understand that all of us need coffee and we're in a rush... So even if there are 8 cars waiting (in their double-line queue) you can generally expect to be out of there with your drink in 5min.... read more
