Some plays bussa nova, some plays folk songs. I come here every morning in Lisbon to watch the sunrise while sipping my tea. This small spot is right in front of my hotel. In the afternoon and during sunset, the city below is painted with different scenes that enchant me all day long. To the left, there's a cafe, and on the right, there's a view of Tagus River. Unfortunately, the small garden below is locked this time.

That's exactly what I did at Jardim de Estrela. This is a large park with plenty of trails, vegetation, and benches. I took advantage of the beauty and meditated here. Beyond the sights, there are several statues throughout the park to check out and learn some history. There are also a bunch of ducks and geese that hang out by the lake. The geese are huge! I'm not sure what they feed them in Portugal but we're talking mutant geese. If you're willing to hang out with mutant geese, this is a relaxing spot to spend some time at.

So I was looking for a big swath of greenery and dense wood... and found none. After my Yelp check in, I learned that this used to be an expo location that has been converted to an urban open space for people to chill. It's a nice spot actually, you can walk along the river and enjoy some nice views, although my husband's plan of a daily morning run never materialized, as all the walking in Lisbon took a toll on the legs. Nonetheless, the view is beautiful, and the sculptures along the walk are intriguing. There are plenty of restaurants, as well as some structures that look like concert halls, and at one end there is the shopping center.

Overlooking the water, it's an open area surrounded by flag staffs and concrete pavers leading to the bay. It's right next to the Vasco Gama Center which has a lot of foot traffic resembling a metropolitan skyscraper-filed zone with plenty of city appeal. If you're looking to hug a tree, you should look elsewhere. If you're into open areas where people can gather and stroll around, this might be your spot. My feet were on fire from climbing all those hills up and down all day so I was actually thrilled to see flat terrain for once...and so were my feet. There's nice sculptures and fresh breeze to soak in while overlooking the boasting new metropolis in Lisboa.

The employee is one of those few Portuguese that plays dumb as soon as they hear a word of English. My husband is American, I'm Portuguese. She heard us speak in English and was surprised when I addressed her in Portuguese with our order. She proceeds to tell me she doesn't understand what a 'garoto' is because she doesn't know 'American words'. When I asked her to confirm she didn't know what a garoto was she had the decency of looking embarrassed and promptly 'remembered' what it was. Next I ordered a 'torrada com manteiga' and she served us a thin slide of whole wheat bread sprinkled with oreganos (you can't make this stuff up). I had her redo it minus the herbs and she still argued she always makes it that way. I mean if you want to deal with the village idiot in a decrepit park this is the place to visit.

The twisted tree in…read morethe middle with the giant canopy is comforting and mesmerizing, and the benches, paths and grassy areas make for a lovely place to sit and read. There is also a little cafe on one end, with lots of outdoor seating. Worth a walk through for sure and a stop to sit a while if you have the time. Next time I'm in Lisbon (I am from California) I would really like to spend more time in this general area overall. This park will surely be on the list to visit again.
