While it's very pretty, there wasn't as much to do as our first tour (Quinta de Regaleria) but they do have extensive gardens. Prepare to walk... a lot! If I could do it over I would have picked Peña Palace to replace it. Still worth a go since the architecture and buildings were very lovely.

You need transport to reach the Palacio de Monserrate with its surrounding park but it is very…read moreworth visiting this building. It is a dream of "1001 Nights" and must have been a fantastic place to be in its golden days - full of exotic, Indian furniture and in-house palm trees. The palace only got restaurated recently and the works are not yet completed. Unfortunately, it is not planned to furnish the place again - so the visitor is dependend on old photographs to get the real feeling for the former interior. The place is open to visitors and is used for concerts and weddings. The park is not yet back to its former glory but since it is a promising tourist location, some labour and money is being invested to get it back in shape (our visit took place in April 2011).

There are many destinations within the park as follows: 1) Sintra Town - This whole area is a Unesco site that includes the town and the the mountain area of Serra de Sintra. 2) Cabo da Roca - this is the westernmost point on Mainland Europe with with cliffs and coastline. 3) Pena Palace - This is one of the most famous buildings in Portugal. It is a Romanticist caste that stands on the top of a hill in the Sinta Mountains. It is one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. Many kings of Portugal lived there. 4) National Palace of Sintra - This is the best preserved medieval royal palace in Portugal. It was inhabited for eight centuries by the Portuguese monarchy. 5) Monserrate Palace - This is one of the most beautiful mansions in Sintra. It blends Arabic, gothic and Indian architectural styles with beautiful surrounding gardens. 6) Castle of the Moors - This is a medieval castle locate on a hilltop below Pena Palace. It was constructed during the 8th and 9th centuries during the period of Muslim Iberia. 7) Praia da Adraga Beach - This is one of the best beaches in Portugal. I highly recommend hiring a driver for the day or spending a couple days in this beautiful area!

A panoramic view of the city…read more A different musician plays during the daytime. It seems well organized: at 11:30, another one comes to replace, with his own guitar and emplifer. Some plays bussa nova, some plays folk songs. I come here every morning in Lisbon to watch the sunrise while sipping my tea. This small spot is right in front of my hotel. In the afternoon and during sunset, the city below is painted with different scenes that enchant me all day long. To the left, there's a cafe, and on the right, there's a view of Tagus River. Unfortunately, the small garden below is locked this time.

It also holds events such as the Lisbon Book Fair. My husband and I walked through this park when we were on vacation. We enjoyed our stroll.

We booked to stay at a hotel nearby, and when I saw the words Parque das Nações, I presumed, not…read moreincorrectly, that it means national park. So I was looking for a big swath of greenery and dense wood... and found none. After my Yelp check in, I learned that this used to be an expo location that has been converted to an urban open space for people to chill. It's a nice spot actually, you can walk along the river and enjoy some nice views, although my husband's plan of a daily morning run never materialized, as all the walking in Lisbon took a toll on the legs. Nonetheless, the view is beautiful, and the sculptures along the walk are intriguing. There are plenty of restaurants, as well as some structures that look like concert halls, and at one end there is the shopping center.

Lisboa is known for its old-world charm that is apparent all throughout the city yet this area is…read morenew to the northeastern part of the city and while it's not a green park, it's also not to be skipped. Overlooking the water, it's an open area surrounded by flag staffs and concrete pavers leading to the bay. It's right next to the Vasco Gama Center which has a lot of foot traffic resembling a metropolitan skyscraper-filed zone with plenty of city appeal. If you're looking to hug a tree, you should look elsewhere. If you're into open areas where people can gather and stroll around, this might be your spot. My feet were on fire from climbing all those hills up and down all day so I was actually thrilled to see flat terrain for once...and so were my feet. There's nice sculptures and fresh breeze to soak in while overlooking the boasting new metropolis in Lisboa.
