The highlight of this garden is the view. Other than that, it's not that great a spot. There is a…read morecafe at the top, a playground nearby and several benches. The fountain was overgrown and there was litter here and there. That's all behind you as you walk up or down the stairs to the miradouro. [Review 19063 overall - 256 in Portugal - 32 of 2023.]

The park itself is of no interest really, just a few trees and paths with spots of grass. The worst…read moreis the Kiosk that serves snacks and drinks. The employee is one of those few Portuguese that plays dumb as soon as they hear a word of English. My husband is American, I'm Portuguese. She heard us speak in English and was surprised when I addressed her in Portuguese with our order. She proceeds to tell me she doesn't understand what a 'garoto' is because she doesn't know 'American words'. When I asked her to confirm she didn't know what a garoto was she had the decency of looking embarrassed and promptly 'remembered' what it was. Next I ordered a 'torrada com manteiga' and she served us a thin slide of whole wheat bread sprinkled with oreganos (you can't make this stuff up). I had her redo it minus the herbs and she still argued she always makes it that way. I mean if you want to deal with the village idiot in a decrepit park this is the place to visit.

Jardim do Torel has three entrances, all of which are easy to pass right by. It's locked at night,…read moreexcept when they have special events there on summer weekends. The view is nice, although not as clear as at some other miradouros. It's also not as crowded. There are shady spots up top, as well as lots of space for sunbathing on the large lower (middle?) level patio. Unfortunately, the quiosque at Torel, which is tucked out of the way in the middle level, has been closed for quite some time now. Last summer they set up a food truck on weekends, but usually you need to bring your own food and drinks. The lack of a quiosque also means there is no bathroom. While I've seen plenty of people go in the bushes, I prefer the Goethe Institute bathrooms (which also has a garden with a cafe). It would be nice if the freguesia opened the public bathrooms in the park attached to their building. There was some viral post claiming that the lower fountain, which is pretty big, is a swimming pool. It is not a swimming pool. It's a fountain. It's like two feet deep. No one is going to stop you from going in either fountain, and I've seen plenty of kids playing in both, but neither is large enough to swim in. Nor is there any sort of filtration system like a public pool would have. And, quite often, one or both fountains has no water at all. While they don't have swimming pool, beer, or toilets, Torel has a nice view, lots of benches, and ping pong.

But is it pretty darned awesome? Yes. Take the Elevador do Lavra https://www.yelp.com/biz/elevado-do-lavra-lisboa?hrid=olfsX3u9AAq6V4iNiiW-Sw (free if you have a daily Viagem card) to the peak or climb the short hill. At the top, there is a small park that has benches, a small playground and shade. There is a pretty fountain, too. If you only have time for one hilltop sunset, go to the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte https://www.yelp.com/biz/miradouro-da-senhora-do-monte-lisboa. But if you have more time, this one is worth it. It was cool to see how the tradition has evolved over the years. Many signs are in both Portuguese and English. All the staff we spoke with were also very fluent in English. This was also the first place I saw a people love us on Yelp sign (in Portuguese) which was super cool. The café serves coffee, beer and wine as well as sandwiches and pasties in a beautiful setting. Part of the café is indoors and part is in a garden courtyard. Beautiful sculptures and flowers. We got here on the bus but you could also Uber. Bus stop is very close but it's a bit out of the way from the main touristic areas. I would budget about two to three hours here depending on how interested you are in the tiles. Definitely have a drink and a snack and enjoy the courtyard garden area. Shop was well stocked, reasonably priced and featured some work by local artisans.

It was a 30 minute max type of museum unless you're going to stop and read every single thing about every single tile in this place...which I guess people must do. One thing that was incredibly cool is the panoramic view of what Lisbon used to look like before the big earthquake they had. It's interesting to see what monuments survived, which ones didn't and what stands there today. Overall, if you have extra time during your trip this isn't a bad way to spend it - I just wouldn't plan on being here for hours and hours (unless you really, really want to).
