It's been a while since I came here, it was way better pre-covid…read more We ordered a bunch of things- somehow EVERYTHING came out at the same time. The food left a lot to be desired and we all felt very bloated leaving the restaurant. * Double salmon roll - rice was kind of hard, fish was "dry" - you could tell that it was pre-made and perhaps been sitting, waiting for service * Crispy pork belly - greasy * Tiger shrimp - flavour was nice, but we felt the shrimp while cooked, wasn't coming to the table "freshly" cooked * Galbi - perhaps a personal preference, but we thought the cuts of beef were quite fatty. * NFC - dry and cold * Rainbow natto - probably the best item served? * Bulgogi tacos - these were smaller portions before and I think I prefer them smaller so that you can have more variety in what you're eating. Overally I found these extremely greasy and the ratio of beef to wrap was off, there was too much meat for the wrap. * Japa burgers - huge - you could eat one burger and be full. these were smaller (also cheaper) before. * Oysters - the "buck-a-shuck" oysters are EXTREMELY small, not worth it at all. Service was mid at best. We appreciated the bartenders offer to make some of the beverages non-alcoholic. I expected better for an early seating when there weren't many customers. Like I said, somehow all the food came out all at once, which really concerned me and made the eating experience quite difficult. That, coupled with the lack of attention throughout the meal, made for a sub-par dining experience.

Their menu isn't extensive so it was a bit of an issue trying to find dishes we wanted to try. We got the duck dumplings, brussel sprouts, grilled shrimp, crispy tofu, miso cod and shrimp scallop chow mein for five people. The stand out was the miso cod, but for $36 it was not enough as an entree as the size of the fish is small and it didn't come with substantial sides. Also after taking our orders, our server disappeared. Another server came by to cover our table but there was no explanation or reason given. It was strange as they had just opened for the day. Expect high prices and small portions. Nice ambiance but don't think I will be back for that.

For food items, I recommend getting a bunch of small appetizers/snacks to share rather than main dishes. I really liked their torched salmon sushi and their honey butter yam fries. One thing that really makes Dondon unique is their Dice Challenge, where for $9 you can roll two dices and the numbers correspond to a drink on the menu! These drinks can range from a simple can of coke to expensive liquor, adding a fun twist to your night. I'm always hoping to roll a 4-5 for their peach calpico :) It's definitely not a quiet spot; there's a lot of chatter, and you frequently hear people screaming their "sake BOMB" drink ritual. But that's what I'm there for: a joyful night spent laughing and cheering with my friends!

We sat at a high top in the bar, and was greeted by Gerhart. He gave us some tips on specials, as well as giving us time to decide on drinks, then food. Their ahi crispy rice tuna is absolutely fantastic. Rice has incredible texture, and the tuna is diced so that it's easier to eat. Beautifully sauced, and garnished with wasabi and ginger along with soy sauce. Just a delight. My buddy had the chicken Alfredo and it looked really tasty. I'd have gone with an entree but I wanted to have the option of trying something else. They have two happy hours on the weekdays, 3-5 and 9-12. I tried about 5 different drinks, including making a non-alcoholic drink one with vodka in it. Just delicious. Gerhart was awesome, and busy. We tried not to be too annoying but I literally had 6 different drinks while catching up with my friend. I appreciated catching up with my bud, and seeing a new place to eat when I'm in town! Thanks to the entire team here for their service and food quality!

The atmosphere was a bit too noisy for my taste, possibly because I hadn't made a reservation and was seated near the bar. The table the hostess assigned me hadn't been thoroughly cleaned, and I made sure to point it out. She apologized and roughly mopped up the spilled liquid. Furthermore, instead of offering me a seat at the table she had indicated, the same hostess practically forced me to sit at the table with my back to the entrance (which I hate). Once she left, I immediately changed seats. Despite these minor inconveniences from the hostess, my waitress exhibited a higher level of professionalism, though she unfortunately lacked enthusiasm. It seemed like she was in a hurry to finish her shift. I don't know if I'll ever go back to this place, as I'm eager to explore other restaurants in downtown Toronto.

There's a second floor available with outside seating as well. Staff is attentive and quick, really similar to all other Joeys. Ceviche is new on the menu it seems and I'm so glad we ordered it. It was so beautifully presented and a delicious taste! Tangy and spicy. It was perfect and I don't eat spicy. The baja tacos had too much veggies so it honestly doesn't look presentable in my opinion. But taste was really good, my friend enjoyed all the food. My favourite here is the ravioli bianco and the ravioli was too dry, needed a little more sauce. I would come back here for sure!

During happy hour, my pregnant wife wanted to order the cheeseburger special that included a beer or glass of wine. She asked if she could substitute the alcoholic drink for a fountain drink instead, but our server was very firm that no substitutions were allowed. What made it even more confusing was that the hostess at the front was incredibly kind and proactive, offering a non-alcoholic alternative to the complimentary champagne. Because of that, it felt odd that swapping an alcoholic beverage for what would likely be a less expensive fountain drink wasn't possible. The food was good, as always, and we still enjoyed our meal. It was just the rigidity around such a simple request that took away from the overall experience. Especially as we were celebrating our last date night before our new baby arrived. Hopefully it's something the restaurant considers in the future, especially for guests who are pregnant or simply don't drink alcohol.
