Forbidden City - Chili oil house made was yummy when we found it on our own.

Forbidden City

Weather most foul in Lower Hutt. Icy rain falling 'sideways'…read more! Hot lunch for two, we spied the Forbidden City. Quintessential mom n pop Chinese restaurant, 'northern' cuisine, says google reviews (nada on yelp, maybe we FIRST?) Cantonese lingo coming from a loud ladies' table as we we entered the welcoming warmth at 2pm, Not busy, 3 tables out of twenty occupied with food / people. Seated quickly, no staff as yet. 7 minutes past the hour, a teenaged young woman staffer appears: 'place a take away order' ? "We are closing". hmmm. I related how cold we were, and ascertained that in fact 2 : 30 was 'closing time, and could we dine in, please if it suited the kitchen? (I'll find out, she says, no Cantonese spoken it's all in Kiwi English). It IS ok, Menus arrive, we quickly order rice noodles chicken fried which came out quickly. Delicious, flavoursome example of Chinese fried noodles, decent quantity balanced, enough protein, crunchy sprouts, green onion, slight taste of the hot wok / fire = competency in the Cuisine Chinois genre. Four+ star dish Clearly chef KNOWS how ! No offer of HOT tea ! No condiments, chili oil, we found that ourselves. We asked for HOT pot of tea when food arrived, it was NOT monitored for top up boiling water. Entrusting one's business to most teenagers IS risky in our experience. CAN be all right, but in most cases, THEIR agendas, and what's good for biz are mutually exclusive. Pleased with the quality of our edibles, we paid, ( +4 bucks for the tea), braved the wicked weather and set off for the parked car on Queens St, Lower Hutt. As 1st Yelp reviewer, I'd like to be kind to this family business, but fairness dictates 'no cheer leading', just relate the ACTUAL experience. Food was 4.0, as was tea when it got there. Tidiness / comfort of dining room is a 3. Value is a 3.5 Service / attitude below par earns a 1.5. We love mom n pop stores and seek them out. THIS one could be VERY good IF front of house professional hospitality was present. Over all 3.0 on the yelpmeter. pics will follow

I came here to Comes and Goes back in November (yes, I know it's June as I write this but seeing as…read morethere's not many reviews on yelp I feel like I have to do this place a service by being a more recent review) after hopping off our cruise ship to explore Wellington with my wife and some friends, and this cafe sits in a beautiful area of town that's very homey and feels like you're venturing through a hallmark movie. It was small and quiet inside as it was still morning, so the wait staff was all the more attentive and quick to answer any questions we had about the menu. My wife is gluten free, and they were able to accommodate her mushroom toast order with gluten free bread (taste was out of this world, it came with a fried cheese tuile on top that just added so much more savoriness), and my Turkish eggs with halloumi was a light but perfectly satiating plate that had a lot of bold flavors coming from the shakshuka style sauce. Our friends got a seasonal special croissant sandwich as well as their bibimbap plate, and considering they spent the entire time eating and not saying anything I would consider that a resounding "yes this is amazing". They also had an amazing raspberry matcha that was so unbelievably creamy and delicious, I highly recommend trying it with oat milk if that fits your fancy. We were visiting from the US, and the prices I would say are comparable to a First Watch. Reasonable for a nice brunch when you're trying something out in a new city. I'm already planning my next trip out to AUS and NZ, and I know for sure I'm going to make this place a must-stop.

The most gorgeous food ever!! I was worried the taste wouldn't match the looks... but it does!! I…read morecannot stop thinking about those Waffles. If you can make a bite with a bit of everything - bacon, cream cheese, berry, chocolate, syrup... omg it's EVERYTHING. I'm salivated just writing this! My only complaint was it was freezing in there! I had to wear my coat the whole meal. My husband also wanted to point out that it was the weakest coffee he had ever had.
