I came over with my guitar, which was extremely out of tune due to complex problems. I had just replaced the strings myself and did basic tuning with no improvement. I showed the guy at the store exactly what the problem was. I left the guitar with him. A few weeks later, I was told that the "guitar was ready". I came over, plugged my guitar in, and saw zero improvement. I showed the guy that the problem persisted, and he asked to try again to fix it. A few weeks later, once again my guitar was 'ready.' I tested the guitar again with no improvement. The guy explained that there was nothing he could do. It didn't prevent him from charging me!! What a crook!!! This guy is a complete scam! Huge scammers! They over price their instruments then artificially cut the price. When I realized how bad he ripped me off I went back to see if I could get a refund and he said it's not policy despite no attempt to make this know on a receipt or postings in the shop. I'm all for supporting small businesses but it makes it hard when they are so willing to scam you. read more

I bought a used ukulele and needed strings and accessories. The gentleman knew exactly what I needed and the prices were good. I got the feeling they are customer oriented, not sales oriented. This place is the best! As a piano teacher I found it near impossible to walk into any store and purchase music books anymore. I started shopping at Jansen's shortly after they moved from Watsonville to Aptos and have always had excellent customer service with a great selection of books. If they didn't have it they would order it for me. I recently moved up to Oregon, so sadly I won't be able to shop there often anymore- but before I left town I was eyeballing a gorgeous etched kalimba in the shop. A few weeks after I left I decided I couldn't live without it, called Jody up and he sent one to me in the mail the very next day. Pretty cool! The customer service goes above and beyond and the selection of musical instruments these days there is huge and awesome. No need to go anywhere else in Santa Cruz County for your music needs!! read more

I love the down-to-earth atmosphere of this place: it makes visiting, shopping, and buying enjoyable and comfortable for experienced musicians and parents just trying to help their kids out. The owner is easygoing and approachable, or he will leave you to browse on your own, as you like. Either way, he's deeply knowledgeable about music and instruments of all kinds. Great guitar selection and above-and-beyond customer service. When my fourteen-year-old bought his first electric guitar here, they were helpful and patient over the weeks as he decided on what was right for him. After buying, he had a small issue, and the owner came up with a way to help him with a part even before the new order arrived. This place had very high end merchandise. I about choked on the price of an ukulele made by Martin company for $289. The average price for Ukuleles was about $100. Considering I was trying to find a beginner ones for my eight-year-old daughter and my 12-year-old niece this was definitely not the place for me to purchase those. But I would definitely recommend it for seasoned players. read more

Great store, helpful and welcoming. Mr. Jansen even let me try out some guitars and helped cut my bass string after wiring it on.

Came in very excited to buy my nephew his very first Yamaha guitar. The customer service was just ok. I felt like my business was not valued. I had to ask for the guitar to be cleaned from all the finger prints. I like to patronize local business, but I almost now wished I had shopped on line as it felt very impersonal especially as I was the one that had to say "thank you" first. read more

No store hours posted on storefront. No store hours detectable on website. Waited till 930 a.m and then I left. I don't know what this guys into but running a business doesn't seem to be it. A bunch of cheap guitars hanging on the walls. Maybe times is hard in the music business. So much for supporting local owned businesses. read more

Went in to buy a piano. Was helped kindly and efficiently. Lots of options and owner was very knowledgable.

I have to agree with Omar. The electric guitar selection isn't that great, although he does carry Ibanez guitars, but both acoustic and ukelele selections are real nice. Not a lot of different brands, but the few acoustic and ukelele brands are up there with the best. Prices are very competetive with internet prices. Jody, the owner is a stand up guy. He let me return both an electric guitar and ukelele in the past few years without receipts, just because I wasn't happy with either. Then he sold me my latest Kala ukelele after letting me try any of the models off the floor. Not all privately owned music shops are that flexible. I know Guitar Center lets you try all instruments, but you never know if some random kid trying to play some Slipknot song over and over again, messed with the factory set-up. I think Jody also does a little luthier work at a reasonable price. Every few months or so, they also hold an acoustic open mic for any and all interested artists, from serious musicians, to people just wanting to play in front of a small audience. Jansen's is a nice little music shop. He may not carry all the brands, but he may have the right brand for you. read more

I have always enjoyed going into Jansens music, starting from the days that they were downtown Watsonville. You never know what they are going to have there. I have found some great used equipment and Jody is always willing to help me out. I once traded 2 guitars that I didn't like for one that I love. The coolest thing is that he is like a music encyclopedia. I can't believe the knowledge he has stored in his head about music and music equipment. When I was teaching band I would bring instruments to him and he knew everything about them and would often fix them while we were talking. The other places would take the instruments and I wouldn't get them back until about a month later. He also gave me a great price on ukulele's for my students at Spreckels school. He would even give the students the same price if they wanted to purchase one. We would just bring in an order of 12 or more. Hard to find a down home music store like this anymore. read more
