Last evening, I attended a get-together of Los Angeles-area FVS grads and parents of grads. I am a…read moreparent of two grads ('02 and '04). Although all the attendees had experienced FVS at different times spanning more than half a century, what struck me last evening was how similar our experiences were. As we visited among ourselves, person after person (myself included) spoke from the heart, sharing stories of transformation, of students' growing self-confidence and self-awarenes, of students being "seen" and "known" by teachers and staff, of students being especially well prepared for college. At the time that my daughters attended, I was a single parent with a limited income. Almost the entirety of my daughters' tuition was paid for by the school. They were treated with the same respect as were the paying students. Prior to coming to Fountain Valley, my older daughter was not finding enough academic challenge in the local schools where we lived. When she wrote her college application essay, she wrote that the willingness of FVS to accept her as a student "saved her life." It certainly transformed it. While schools can change over time, and while I have not been on campus for many years, I can tell you that the culture at FVS is, at its heart, student-centered, kind, unpretentious, a place where students can feel free to discover who they are, and a place that offers tremendous opportunities. They offer DIY sandwiches with fruit and salad spreads on parent visiting days, but I've been there on "normal" days and found the food to be more varied, healthier, fresher and better prepared than anything I was ever offered in high school. I like the omelette station at breakfast, the ever present fresh fruits, and most of the the warm entrees. The pizza is only 2 stars, but these punks can have four star pizza from Borrellio Brothers delivered to their dorms, so thats no big deal. That kid has no idea how good he has it.

Parents, be warned when you take your students to this school. The principal will initially be…read morewarm and caring to you, but the second you happen to bring up a problem, she will become the most difficult person you will deal with. My daughter with autism was severely bullied but the teacher was uninterested and failed to take action. The teacher literally hid behind her desk and ran when I tried to talk to her. We had to transfer our children out of the school due to the conduct on the part of the teacher and principal and vice principal that was so bad we had to file a complaint with the district that sustained our allegegations of bullying by the student and teacher involved. The teacher would repeatedly mark our child's work wrong despite it being correct, leading to lower grades than she had earned. I went to this district myself, and Sunrise is a major let down for all of us.

The whole schools grading system is based on the idea of "if you can copy what the teacher wrote and copy the notes down on the 'test', then you pass." Also being apart of their "gifted and talented" program and getting an honor roll certificate, it doesn't really mean anything. It just means you can copy notes and do the bare minimum. In my opinion this school is for the kids who can just hardly do the bare minimum, so that reaching the bare minimum deserves a nice little piece of paper with their name on it and "honor roll" written across the top in shiny golden letters so they can feel all warm and special for simply paying attention and taking the time to write a few sentences.

There was a time that I told the dean about what was going on, the micro aggressions and everything that the teachers did not talk about. She talked to the students then immediately after they came in the classroom cheering because they said she didn't care. I decided not to go to the highschool because I knew that no one would care. Wonder why I don't trust deans anymore? And my brother goes to the highschool. For a school that's supposed to help with special ED kids, they do not check in with their students enough about grades or tutoring.

The gym coach (Mr. Lubich - sorry if spelled wrong) is aware of any medical conditions and keeps in touch with me about my daughter's asthma. The music teacher (Mr. Letellier) is supportive and encouraging. Her science/math teacher (Ms. Gettal - sorry if spelled wrong) is creative and my daughter always talks so much after a science experiment. Honestly, I could not have planned a better school for our girl to attend. Pinello has teachers that teach for a purpose, that care about home life and school life blending together, and are generally amazing!
