I had a seven year old water heater that had a weeping copper pipe joint on the hot side where water would slowly weep out over time at an elbow joint. It was not a big leak but just a slight weeping. In any event, it was a maintenance job that had to be fixed before it became a bigger problem. So I was in the market for someone with experience who did not mind doing a smaller job, as this was not something that would call for a plumbing contractor. I found Carrara's Repair Service listed in the neighborhood newspaper, and thought I would give them a try. When I called he answered and we set up an appointment for a few days later after I explained my plumbing issue. He came on the appointed day and took a look, told me what he thought it needed, and gave me a price. His price seemed fair and he even negotiated a bit on the price, so we had an agreement. He was probably here just a bit over an hour. He cut out the weeping joint, brought in all new copper and built a new assembly (two 90 degree elbow fittings, two short stubs, and two couplings), and then sweat the new assembly in place and we were done. Steve is very knowledgeable - he has 30 some years experience as an industrial mechanic - knew what to do and how to do it. He had all the equipment he needed in his truck, and completed the job right then and there. He also left the area as clean as it was when he showed up. I was very pleased with his work, and would not hesitate to use him again. Recommended!

One problem with home ownership is finding people to do smaller jobs that most contractors don't…read morewant to bother with. Another is dealing with a municipality that demands everything to be done by licensed and insured contractors and has a list of their approved contractors but doesn't require them to show proof of workman's comp insurance (Orland Park). So right off the bat you're stuck either overpaying someone "approved" to replace a perfectly good deck or fence when all they need is some simple repair, or giving up and letting it stay broken. You can't fix it yourself because you're not an "approved contractor" and a lot of handyman services are just a guy with a truck. I found a flyer at my local Ace Hardware for these guys and saw they are both licensed and insured and on Orland's worthless approved contractor list. Communication was professional and they showed up on time to evaluate and give an estimate to do some work to the deck and fence. Our handyman recommended a deckover product for our older deck to help fill flaws and cracks. It's an older deck but still solid and not worth replacing yet. The product worked well and the work was done well too. He even suggested we go get the supplies to save some cash, which we did. He also installed a new fixture in the stairwell we've had for like three years because I couldn't figure out how to get up there to install it. We're happy with the results on our deck and light fixture install and looking forward to getting a few posts reset for the fence. We'll be using this service again for sure.
