ONE STAR OVERALL, and DON'T TRUST THE GRILL CHEF. We were excited to dine at Jamie's in Harrogate, given his stellar reputation. We were visiting from San Francisco and our long time friends in Harrogate wanted to take us there. With our reservation, we were seated promptly. The meat platter starter and the focaccia were both wonderful. My wife and I had main courses of pasta and our host's wife had the lamb lollipops. Our host ordered the rib eye steak, medium rare. When it was served the meat was cooked perfectly, but it and the mushrooms were quite cold, and the chips were lukewarm. The three other meals were adequately hot. The server was called over and asked that if the kitchen could prepare me another steak and emphasized that he expected a new piece of meat, not this one warmed up, which would ruin the done-ness. Many minutes passed, wit the rest of us politely dining, but feeling uncomfortable that we were eating without him. Finally a new platter arrived, but sadly he quickly saw that the chef chose to ignore his request and simply threw the previously served piece of meat back on the grill--it was easily verified because there was a corner missing where he had cut off the first piece for a bite of cold steak. You can guess the rest--the steak was completely burnt through and through--taking 'well done' to a new level.
So, he again called the server to show him what was done, asking why his request for a new piece of meat was not honored. There was no explanation, and our night out was ruined. We won't be returning and our hosts will be sure to tell as many people in Harrogate as possible to avoid the restaurant. read more
