I am submitting this complaint to formally report unethical billing practices by the dental office…read moreassociated with a disputed dental charge of approximately $300. I want to be clear that the quality of clinical care itself is not the issue; my concerns relate solely to billing conduct, transparency, and the handling of insurance-related disputes. After receiving care, I submitted the claim to my dental insurance provider. The claim required escalation and is currently under active review by the insurer. This process was communicated clearly and in good faith, and I have documentation, including a claim number, demonstrating that the charge is under legitimate insurance review, not ignored or refused. Despite this: The office pursued payment while the insurance claim was unresolved asking for "just a small payment" while they wait. The matter was escalated to a third-party collector before insurance determination There appears to be no reasonable accommodation for standard insurance dispute timelines There was no transparent explanation of why the bill was deemed immediately collectible rather than pending insurance resolution Patients should not be pressured to pay balances that are actively under insurance review, particularly when the provider is aware that the insurer is evaluating coverage or reimbursement. This practice places patients in an unfair position--either paying out-of-pocket prematurely or being threatened with collections while complying with standard insurance procedures. Further, the billing escalation process appears to lack: Appropriate verification that insurance review was complete Ethical safeguards before referral to collections Clear written communication outlining patient rights during an insurance dispute While I respect the clinicians and the care I received, billing practices are part of patient care and ethical responsibility. Referring a patient to collections under these circumstances undermines trust and may violate professional and consumer standards. I am requesting that this matter be reviewed for: Compliance with ethical billing standards Appropriate handling of insurance-pending balances Policies regarding referral to collections Oversight of third-party billing or collection agents acting on the practice's behalf I am submitting this complaint in good faith to ensure accountability and to prevent similar experiences for other patients. edit: Owner responded - yes, this is for this business Lil Smile Dr. Toppi. I am also a healthcare provider and I know this is 100% unethical. They did send me to collections for $300 while my insurance was escalated. I did pay the $300 (minus paying the "interest fees" - another unethical practice!) while my insurance worked on it out of fear. It is sad way to treat patients and other people deserve to know about these unethical practices.

Firstly, the aesthetics of the inside were beautiful! Modern-look, but homely feel and truly a hidden gem in La Mesa. This office needs updated photos here in Yelp to reflect this! The front desk was very friendly and patient in helping me with check-in as a new patient, despite being a busy time at the office when I arrived. Shout out to Arlene and Belina! I had my teeth cleaned by the hygienist, Shaleen, and she was wonderful! So caring and welcoming. Before she cleaned by teeth she also explained what my X-rays were showing just to know my baseline and what the office will continue to monitor. They have really high-tech gear at this office and she was able to do imaging right there in the chair as well! I needed a few things done, not just a cleaning, and feel like I saw the whole office in one day. Which I am glad to have received the full experience because it just solidified how awesome this practice is! The dental assistants I saw, Trina and Mary, were very kind and helpful to explain each step of the process. I really appreciate the transparency of the staff. Dr. Le is very caring and thorough with the exam. He made me feel very comfortable and warmly welcomed me as a new patient as well. I am very glad my family has found this hidden gem and highly recommend for patients needing good, comprehensive care out here in East County!

Their office was recommended by a close friend who goes here. I booked an initial consultation over a month out. Unfortunately, my appointment was cancelled the morning of my appointment due to miscommunication between the staff. The treatment coordinator, Ilene, was so rude and condescending to me that I can not in good faith work with this office going forward. Any points she had about why my appointment needed to be cancelled at the last minute were lost by her inconsiderate tone. I hope she was just having a bad day and that she doesn't treat others the way I was treated. Such a bummer because I was really looking forward to working with them.

She explained the process in a way that made it easy to understand, walked us through what recovery would look like, and made sure we felt completely comfortable with the post-procedure exercises. She emphasized that the decision was 100% ours to make, based on her expert recommendations, and we never felt pressured. When she took him back for the frenectomy, we were nervous -- but when she returned, he wasn't even crying. In fact, he looked instantly relieved, which gave us so much peace of mind. The precision of the laser she used clearly made a difference, and thanks to her guidance and our consistency with the stretches, his recovery went really smoothly. The entire office was warm and welcoming. The nurses were sweet, and the space is decorated in such a fun, kid-friendly way. A week after his procedure, when we came in for a follow-up, Dr. Chan even took a photo of him in his cute little outfit to share on her office's social media. That small gesture made the experience feel even more personal and thoughtful. Highly recommend Dr. Chan to any parent looking for a provider who is both professional and compassionate. We felt seen, supported, and most importantly, our baby is doing so much better now.

I have had the complete perfect experience from start to finish! I was completely overly amazed on how polite and empathetic the staff and dental hygienists were to me and my 5 yr old son. 1. The office was very nice and had little arcade games in the waiting room to entertain the little ones. 2. Loved the seasonal decor, felt like a warm welcome into a kindergarten class room, very nicely designed for children to make them feel safe and secure. 3. Every single person we interacted with was so helpful and actually more than willing to answer questions I had and answered questions I didn't know to ask. 4. The staff is experienced really knows how to talk and interact with children to make them comfortable and fun! Yes!! Fun!! 5. Their prices are fair and reasonable, as I had no dental insurance or dental plan so I had to pay out of pocket. 6. They REALLY, HONESTLY do not try to do more work than actually needed, then over bill you for it. They actually SAVED me money and heartache!! (Read on below). My son broke off a part of his molar, after the x-rays they said had one cavity and needed a stainless steel crown and pulpotomy for the broken tooth. I was scared and worried. I research and investigated everything about crowns and alternatives, turns out, crowns are the best option, but still felt the need to discuss to the doctor about saving his tooth and doing a filling. The hygienists gave me affirmation that Dr. Whitcomb always does what is best and is conservative by doing the least amount of work and only does what is absolutely needed. Still apprehensive, I at least had that trust walking out of the office. After my sons procedure they let me know they were able to save the broken molar and no steel crown or pulpotomy was needed just a good filling. I literally wanted to cry I was so happy, I hugged and thanked everyone. So that saved me $380 and most importantly my sons beautiful tooth!!! This was my sons first dentist experience and not once was he scared, he actually liked it a lot! I would recommend them to everyone young or mature and will continue to only go there from now on. Dr. Witcomb is a marvelous accredited Dentist and does wonderful work! Again, thank you for your service in the Military Dr. Witcomb! After over 5 years of trusting this office to have my teeth straightened I regret ever walking in…read moreto this place. I went in to Dr. Surrillos to have my teeth and my daughters teeth straightened. After 2 years my teeth looked fantastic, yet I was told to keep coming to get the front aligned, turn, a tooth, a make room for my implant. I trusted them and did so. Then in the 2 nd year and after I had already paid them off before the 3 year, my bottom teeth began to noticeably shift higher and higher making them look completely side ways. Each time anything has happened, I had to tell them about it, otherwise they wouldn't do anything. As was the case with this. Years went by and they never addressed the issue. Eventually I asked them how much longer is this going to be it had already been 5 1/2 years and my bottom teeth were now completely misaligned. They all of a sudden changed everything around super fast and then ruined my top teeth by pulling them out and over the flared bottom teeth, flaring them and ruining how straight they had been. The canines also got pulled out of alignment and the midline also ended up being completely off center, there are spaces between my teeth that show black behind and get food stuck because the teeth are not aligned and lastly I don't have room for my implant and now I have to get braces again. He refunded my payment, however it is not enough to fix them now and does not begin to cover the 5 1/2 years I had to wear braces and the emotional damage I have experienced since they were removed. I was 34 when I got them and 39 when they were removed and you'd never think I had braces. I truly wish I would have never gone here. I would not recommend or go here ever again. Although they are all very nice, It is churn and burn and your kids wouldn't be able to speak out about it. My daughter's front teeth are not as aligned and her front tooth is already shifting back, with restrainer wear. Please review the photo attached. The bottom photos are what I now need to go to an orthodontist to fix. They are FLARED, misaligned and my bite is so off it hurts, I have gaps on the tops next to the gums and I can barley close my mouth over my teeth with out effort. DONT GO HERE.

Their waiting room is terrible, zero toys, a few plastic chairs - it is not a good environment for children to start out when they are nervous for the dentist. I went recently with my 2.5 and decided it would be my last visit with them - During the exam I was told by one of the female dentists (who was very rushy and unfriendly) that my 2.5 year old son had 4 cavities total, two of which required pulpectomys and that he should be fully sedated for his fillings. I was extremely uncomfortable with putting my young kid to sleep so I decided to consult a different dental office. The other dentist was patient and kind, he looked throughly at my son's teeth. He informed me that he only has 2 cavities and that they could be taken care of easily (no pulpectomy needed). I asked him if he needed to be sedated and he said, "absolutely not." He said he would never want to sedate a young kid for only 2 cavities, when they can easily be done in the office with laughing gas. I honestly feel like the dentist here was just trying to make extra money off me. Why sedate my child and do a full pulpectomy when he didn't need it?!?
