James did our son's preschool class photos and then our family photos in May. We can't be happier with either. First of all, let me start by saying it's not the easiest thing to work with little people who clearly have their own minds, are strong-willed and sometimes reluctant to cooperate. Our son's class photos from last semester, which was merely a few months ago, weren't great at all. His expressions were unnatural and forced, and we didn't even bother to purchase any. However, this year, I was so glad that his school chose James. Their class photos were just amazing. What a day and night. Seeing my son's class photos made us want James to take pictures of all of us. So we did a family photo session with him. The results? Just awesome. There's no question that James was very experienced, including in interacting with young children! Instead of asking a 3-year old to follow instructions, James was great at using various tricks to let down his guard and making the whole session a fun game. All the photos were results of natural interactions among the four of us. And the best thing? It took only about 30-40 mins - perfect for little kids' attention span! Don't get me wrong though - nothing was skipped. We ended up with lots and lots of great pictures to frame - way more than we expected! The pictures were incredible, tack sharp, and with that kind of "ethereal glow" you only get from a seasoned professional photographer. James was also very good with my otherwise skittish dog! Exceptional photographer!! Heck I'd give him 10 more stars if I could! Where was this guy when I was planning my wedding?! James has the eye and passionately loves what he does. Those were enough reasons for me to hire him to take photos of my family but mostly my baby. He made it easier and convenient by coming to us, driving to our home 45minutes away (He's from SF). And for additional photos, he didn't mind driving another 10 minutes to shoot more at a nearby park. He translated our looks on photographs well. My 7month old at the time looked beautiful than ever. My husband and I looked un-raggedy and decent (Since having our baby, we've been looking wrinkly and haggard). Our semi dilapidated house looked unreal as a background canvas. Who knew there were actually nice spots to take pics around our 60yr old house? Obviously only JM knew. This guy will go to lengths to take THE shot...it's all about that special capture and composition right? If something had to break along the process then it's all worth as long as it's not his camera. He accidentally broke our chair in the process of shooting my baby who was slowly becoming restless. We hired James to take photos for our daughter's 1st birthday party at a golf course. The party was attended by 130 guests so we wanted a photographer to be able to capture the moments of the day. James was fantastic. He arrived on time and had a great attitude. We were able to do family portraits at a gazebo as guests were arriving and he took photos of the facility and the decorations. He also did portrait sessions with some of our family members. He was the first professional photographer to make our daughter smile. That really impressed us! He was great with the kids and did a great job taking pictures of the party and our guests. He made me laugh during the party because he told me to put my drink down so I could finally have a relaxed picture with my husband. He had a great energy and we felt so comfortable around him. James best trait is his responsiveness to e-mails. He responded to our inquiry within 24 hours and he replies within the same day. His price is also reasonable. He presents his work via an online slideshow gallery that you could share with your family friends. You also have an option to purchase photos directly from him via a link that he provides you. This was such a convenient feature when we shared the pictures with our friends and families. He has a quick turnaround!!! We got our slideshow within a week after the party! He edited the photos creatively and compiled a slideshow that tells a story. James will give you digital files, which is super important to us. The files also included some photos that he added some creative touch such as making the cake in color to contrast with the black and white photos. In addition, he provided photos with his logo included. We posted these online on our social media sites so we could give him credit. We love James and he is top on our list. We had originally scheduled a family portrait with him recently but we had to cancel due to conflict in our schedule. We are planning to contact him again in the months ahead to schedule a family session at a nice location in San Francisco. We don't mind driving to SF to meet James since he's worth it! We hired James as our engagement photographer after finding lots of great reviews on Yelp. My fiance and I had never done this before so had no idea what to expect. James was super easy to work with from preparation to the actual shoot. He did his best to make us feel comfortable, worked quickly, and even provided refreshments! My wife & I had a really excellent experience with James. We hired him to do our 1st daughter's newborn photos. We knew that we wanted to do some shots outside on the water, and we wanted some traditional new baby photos. James was super-accomodating & communicative as I asked questions & confirmed information leading up to the day of the shoot. On the day of the shoot, he was on time & ready to go. We did a ton of shots in our home, where he scoped out the best lighting & location. He followed our direction & opinion where we had some & offered his, too. my fiancee and i had originally gone with a different photographer, but ran into some issues during the contract signing phase, and no longer felt comfortable. so we went back to james to see if he was available, and much to our delight, he was! we purchased a package with him, that included an engagement session in sf with negatives, as well as 9 hrs of wedding day coverage (at our wedding in palo alto), with negatives and all photos posted on his website. also, since our wedding was on a sunday in january, he was willing to give us a discount, which was great. everything i thought of james from my initial meeting with him held true to form, all the way to the end of the wedding. with james, this is what we got: *highly skilled & professional photographer *excellent communication throughout, his email response time was always within 24 hrs, and he was always available for phone meetings when needed *well-organized and thought out plans for both our engagement shoot and wedding day shoot *on-site visit to our wedding venue and surrounding areas (to scope out possible photo taking opportunities) a few weeks before our wedding on our wedding day, james arrived early to take some photos of the exterior of the hotel where we were getting married. he then came to the room where the bridesmaids and i were getting ready, and proceeded down the very long list of photos that i had requested (bridal party, bride only, dress & accessories). my groom and i also had our "first look" at the hotel, which he set up very well. one of my must haves was a full wedding party shoot at stanford university before the ceremony, and he handled this beautifully, choosing buildings/backgrounds that would complement our wedding party colours and let these colours stand out in the photos. even though it was a bit rainy, we were able to complete this shoot, and he even had a nice big umbrella for us to use. upon return to the hotel, we did immediate family photos with our parents & siblings, then proceeded with the ceremony, chinese tea ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. overall, james did a wonderful job covering our wedding, and we really feel that he went above and beyond the call of duty on our wedding day. *even though the bridesmaids and i were already running late (from hair, makeup & getting dressed), he did a great job getting us back on schedule, displaying great poise with a gentle, but firm voice. *since the groom & groomsmen were also running late, he took it upon himself to pin all of the boutonnieres on the guys before they had their shoot. *as a very anxious and nervous bride, he did a great job in keeping me calm, letting me know that everything was under control, and that everything (and everyone) looked great. at one point, toward the end of cocktail hour, he even went out of his way to get me a drink! *though we were running late again during the dinner reception, he took our queues and read our body language very well and made sure all other events for the reception were covered in a timely manner. our photos came back just a few days after the wedding (amazingly fast for wedding day photos), and not only did we enjoy the photos, but we saw that he had given us 700 hi-resolution negatives (more than the 500 that were promised initially). he also put together a wedding highlights slideshow with music which was a very nice touch and summarized our special day. we had a great time working with james and getting to know him during our wedding planning process, and would highly recommend him to our friends, family, and future brides and grooms. read more

After interviewing with 5 other photographers, we didn't know where to turn for our wedding photography. We didn't want a photographer that confined us to a particular package deal of certain sized photos and albums. We had a specific budget in mind and wanted to make sure we owned the rights to our photos. I started searching on Yelp and found James. We meet him at his home studio in San Francisco. He was very accommodating with our schedules and instantly we could tell he was very passionate about his work. We spent a little over an hour with him and talked about what we wanted out of our wedding photography from types of photos, photography style, what was important to us on our wedding day, family dynamics, even a general schedule of the wedding day. He showed us actual albums and a slide show that was of a wedding at the same place we were being married. It made our decision easy because we could easily place ourselves in those photos which was a feeling we didn't have with any of the other photographers. We had a conference call with James one month before the wedding to go over all details which was just as smooth as our original meeting. He checked in every once in a while which made me feel like we weren't just a "day of" client. James cares about his work and his clients and you can tell his passion in the way he communicates. The day of the wedding James was on time and met us where we were getting ready so he could have a few before shots. He then met us at our ceremony/rehearsal site where he was very conscious of who was arriving at specific times. Unless there were photos where James was directing me where to stand or how to pose I never felt like there was a photographer "in the middle of everything". During the ceremony I don't remember any flashes or seeing him move around so I know he was doing a great job. He was getting the most amazing photos without being in the middle of everything and we loved that. He made sure to get shots of all our family, bridal party, bride/groom, and also had enough time to make it back to cocktail hour to take photos of all our guests before we were introduced. He made sure to check in and ask if there were any shots that I might want that maybe we hadn't taken yet. We were happily surprised James posted our photos just a couple days after the wedding and our guests and family were able to see all our photos before we even came back from our honeymoon. The photos were very easy to navigate on the website and it even allowed our family to buy photos directly off the site. James sent us a download link in which we downloaded "highlights", low resolution, and high resolution photos with ease. We couldn't have been more pleased with the entire experience and we absolutely love our photos! He captured all the emotion of the day and was able to work with all kinds of personalities and ages. James is really amazing! I loved his photos on his website and when my fiance and I met with him, we knew we were going to pick him for our wedding. Our engagement session was a couple hours long, and we got really great shots at 4 different locations in the city. He sent us the low resolution and high resolution photos within a couple days. We ordered some prints (canvass and large prints on high quality photo paper) and are very happy with them. He made us feel comfortable the entire time and was really fun to work with. Through the entire wedding planning process, James was great. He was very responsive with emails and phone calls, which I really appreciated since I'm always on top of those things and planning a wedding is so stressful. It's nice to know that you will hear back from your vendor within a day or two. On our wedding day, James showed up early, stayed for 9 hours of coverage and definitely worked hard. He got so many amazing shots for us and he was great at taking some great photos in short amounts of time in between all the wedding day activities. He was also really good about getting all those obligatory family shots right after the ceremony. He was quick and efficient, even amongst the chaos of family and friends swarming around us. He was great with kids and parents and my grandma. All my family and friends kept telling me that he was great and everyone LOVED the pictures he took! My husband and I are procrastinators. We were worried we wouldn't find a photographer that we liked. We saw James' reviews on yelp and declded to email him. Within a couple of hours James emailed back and we met with him that day. When my husband and I met with him, we were quite impressed. James is passionate, enthusiastic, and has a great energy and presence, especially for a wedding. When we met him at his house, he completely put us at ease and was so accomodating to our needs. James was so well organized in his presentation. It was a no brainer to choose him as our wedding photographer. James met with us a week before our wedding and discussed details that we otherwise would have forgotten. He also scoped out our venue for a couple of hours before meeting us and discussed the lighting and all the obiligatory photos we might want to take. At the wedding he was a hit. He made everyone laugh. He even helped my dad and my bridesman pin their flower on their suit. He got a photo of every single person that attended the wedding. I couldn't believe it. You know a lot of people complain to me about wedding photographers because they don't get the photos until months later. I got married on a Friday and by Tuesday I was able to see all the photos online. I loved the photos he took. He got all the right shots. He was able to capture a lot of great moments in the ceremony and at the rehearsal that my husband and I are now able to share with others for the rest of our lives. James was truly a life saver. James is the best photographer my husband and I could've found for our wedding this summer! He's got a great eye, takes fantastic candids, has a very easy going attitude, and can get a smile out of the toughest subjects. We found James while doing research for our engagement photos. We had already chosen a wedding photographer at that point but wanted a different, more fun style for our engagement photos. After looking at his portfolio online, we knew he was going to be the one to take our engagement photos, and after spending an afternoon with him taking photos on the beach and in the city chasing after cable cars, we knew he had to be the one with us on our wedding day too. Our wedding took place at Hans Fahden vineyards in Calistoga, which is a place James had never photographed. To our surprise, he said he would go out and visit the site a month before our wedding to scope out the place and become familiar with the layout. None of the other wedding photographers we met with wanted to do that! James is the consummate professional, yet really personable and fun to be around. James did our engagement and wedding day photo shoot and I can't say enough good things about him. Not only is he a great photographer, he is really fun to work with. I thought I would be uncomfortable being in front of a professional camera but James' laid-back style and sense of humor made me feel really comfortable and natural. So of course, the pictures turn out well. He was always able to tease out a genuine smile out of my husband and I. Oh and all of our guests loved him, which is also a plus. His prices are also extremely fair (finally, someone who doesn't charge an arm and a leg for anything wedding-related)! He's also very professional and good with email correspondence.
