Jake's Saloon provides the lonely residents of a roadside town with a deserted landscape a place to fulfill their boring lives. The desperation of being trapped in a town in which you cannot step outside without being suffocated by L.A. touristas driving expensive imports on their way to Mammoth drives the locals to drink. Lone Pine offers one place that does the job well....Jake's Saloon. Everything about Jake's takes on a sense of starved slowness, like crawling through mud, though I find it disturbingly attractive; the local bar flys, the bad music on the juke box, the poorly mixed drinks, and the local housewives looking for a distraction from the RV park. Jake's offers 2 pooltables, shuffle board and ping pong. DWP laborers pepper the bar and crowd the pooltables looking for their next victims. These guys run this town and Jake's knows this and is willing to deal with the trials and tribulations of their farkakta behavior. If you find yourself driving to Mammoth and need to empty your bladder and wet the whistle, stop in, piss in the trough and have a beer. If you are looking for a nite out in Lone Pine, proceed with caution. My group was approached by a local haus frau asking for backup in case she got in a fight. She stated she is hated for her beauty and that jealousy drives the other ladies to violence. Just another nite at Jake's. read more

Little every local we spoke to, said we had to go to Jake's-- per one person don't be intimidated it's got locals and travelers alike and everyone is welcome. It's quite large space. Travelling through Lone Pine on my Harley and saw this saloon calling my name. I bellied up to the bar and the bartender greeted my promptly and with a smile. I noticed that the ambiance is "old west" themed. There were only a few patrons bellied up and they were friendly while striking up a conversation. This is a dive bar at its finest. Jake's is a full bar. We had always heard that it was a beer and wine bar only but they have since picked up a full liquor license. It is the only freestanding bar in town and it has a perfectly vintage dive bar appeal. The bartender she was very good. Poured a proper cocktail. We will definitely be back and we do recommend this bar. The one thing I do not understand is how they cannot have a guard rail protecting you from falling to your certain death out on the sidewalk. This is definitely the type of place well they aren't too welcoming to strangers. Got a major attitude from the lone female tending the bar. There were 27 of us. You think the person running the bar would be stoked because hey more money more tips. And this bar only serves beer and wine so not too hard to serve anyone. It's not like she had to mix up all sorts of concoctions. Open a bottle of beer and hand it over. How hard could that be? Well apparently the most hardest thing to ever do ever in the history of the world. Or at least that's the energy she was putting out. Lone Pine really doesn't have much in the way of nightlife so this place appears to be it. But believe me if they had any competition with a bartender that had even a tiny bit of personality and friendliness Jakes would not be around. Giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because all the games kept our large group occupied for a long time. read more

This place was really cool with the western vibes! Walking through the swinging wooden entrance, the displays through the glass tabletop; I mean to see an old gun with shells there just made it for me! :-) Yeah, there was no food, so eat beforehand. Also, they put some duct tape to use for some of the bench seats, but it works. If you want a saloon this is your place, and if you want upscale LA, you're in the wrong place. The only down side to the night was that my daughter beat me twice in shuffleboard. I got some revenge in ping pong, and the guys playing billiards didn't mind when the balls bounced their way. The bathroom decor fit right in, and always says how much people care about their place. And...there is a modern juke box, love it!!! read more

I think it's the only bar in town, but it has a great local charm without being uptight and unwelcoming to strangers. Bartender was conversational, friendly, and helpful. Even if we had non-alcohol drinking members in the party (for that given night), he was calm about offering bar peanuts, soda, and water to us instead. Other members feasted on an IPA they had on tap. They also have other beer (some craft, but domestic as well -- not a ton taps though) and wine. Pool and shuffleboard to pass the time. Not a fancy bar at all, but a nice place to wind down and pass the time while in this small town with a population of 1800 people. read more

STONED HEINNY AT JAKES! After me and nine others spent the weekend getting hot, sweaty, and dirty, on a backpacking trip in the Virginia Basin area, friend/fellow hiker and I were a bit parched and in need of a wet, cold libation. Not only is friend a fellow hiker, he's also a Harley rider and has put his left leg down his right leg up tilted his head back and finished many cups of beeeer all over the place and suggested pullin' up a stool here at Jake's Saloon. If I had spurs, this is the place for makin' them jingle jangle. Like the Old West, this saloon is rustic; entrance-a pair of swinging saloon style doors, weathered wood flooring, rustic barstools, and mounted on the wall, horns from various animals, fortunately no horses were used in the decorating of this pub. But wait!! There's more! John Wayne is waiting to have his picture taken with you. Don't mind the rifle in his hand, just have a seat and smile. Better yet, do as he tells you. But wait!! There's more! The décor of this fine watering hole is covered floor to ceiling of lots o' bucks, of the greenback kind, mostly one-dollar. Country flags, street signs, several flat screen TV's, and Radio Flyers, hang over the electronic dartboard, shuffleboard, ping-pong, and pool tables. Not crowded whatsoever on a Sunday afternoon, just a few locals. We mozied up to the bar, each straddled stools, and ordered a Stone IPA and a Heineken from the quick to serve and friendly bartender. Stone, served in the bottle, Heinny fresh from the tap. Nothing like a wet cold libation to wash trail dust away. PIT STOP: This Old Western watering hole may not offer 33 taps of fine craft libations, but this creatively rustic brewhouse is a place to get off your high horse, hang your "peace," and take in a little bit of the Old West with modern conveniences. Yes, they not only have indoor plumbing, they have flushing toilets. Will I return? Sure, why not. Love the chill atmosphere, the comradery among the locals, and their beeeeer is sweatin' cold. read more

Best thing about Jake's is the ambiance, gregarious owner, pool, ping pong, table shuffleboard (what do you call that?). All it needs is Jenga. Maybe they have it, we didn't ask. Lots of beer choices, great jukebox choices. My review is a bit mixed as we returned and instead of the owner, there was a bartender who was much more interested in another customer who'd arrived after us and that bartender seemed a bit out of it after enjoying some kind of treat he'd brought. I felt uncomfortable and we left rather than go another round that day. read more

I've loved coming to this place whenever stopping through Lone Pine. This "old west" saloon offers fun games including pool, ping pong and shuffle board. The drinks are good and ambiance offers a nostalgic feeling. The reason for the 2 star review is purely the attitude my family and I received from the bartender (middle aged, fair skinned, dark hair in a tight bun, very over weight female). I saw other reviews with similar complaints. All the other establishments in this unique trail town have always offered warm and welcoming attitudes. It's disappointing that one bartender's sarcastic and condescending personality can ruin such a great pastime. I will not be returning here as this town has better things to offer. read more

F yeah! I went to this place last year while hanging around Lone Pine before climbing The Mountain and it is dope. Seems Lone Pine is the stopover point between Las Vegas and San Francisco/Los Angeles for Europeans doing their Grand Tour of the States so this tiny desert town is chock-a-block with Italians and Dutch, French, English and all sorts of others and they all congregate at Jake's Saloon. Of course there are reasons they all gather here and not at The Pizza Factory (although The Pizza Factory is also a Great Discovery). Drinks are reasonably priced and the beers are actually fairly diverse in what you would expect to be a Bud/Coors/Miller town. Also this is where my friends discovered the amazing bar game of shuffleboard. And the place isn't too crowded so you can pretty much hog this and the pool table all night if you want to. read more

Dunno where the hell the good reviews for this place come from. The barman BARKS at you for IDs when you walk in and then gets antsy when you want to see what beers they have. Not everyone knows exactly what you serve, man. He reminded me of some reject from the army who collects memorabilia in his basement dungeon. The place is loud, plays crappy I Love America country music, and the graffiti all over the walls basically tells you that it probably used to be the hot spot of Lone Pine back in the 90s and it hasn't moved on from that era since. If you're in Lone Pine you're there after a) a long drive or b) a long hike. Even if you want to let loose and not go to a quiet relaxing place (like the cracking, brilliant Double L down the street) this is not the place. No one likes to be antagonised and then have to sit there sipping the overpriced beer you just bought for the next 20mins. Redneck craphole. Go to the Double L! read more
