I'm surprised this old listing hasn't been claimed and updated. I've gone to this studio since they opened about 13 years ago. It's improved a lot, including opening the second location in Guilford. And name change after Petra bought it from OG. I appreciate that only the power classes are hot and that you can do regular flow in a reg temperature room. They tend towards more yin positions (ie slower but harder to hold asanas. Less likely to get injured in this method. They have morning and evening classes. I will speak with the owner about claiming this business!

I've tried it several times over the years, but have found it a bit too earnest and intentional for my easily-distractible mind and a little too challenging for my large-motor, hopelessly inflexible body. All that changed, however, after one session at Pradipika-which ironically means to illuminate or shed light on-Yoga. Diaphanously dressed Marcy led our Power Vinyasa class in the small, yummy smelling studio. Her pace was persistent, but allowed for ample time to make adjustments or suggestions for modifications in either direction of difficulty. At various times during the class she'd oh-so subtly and gently reposition me. And at the risk of sounding creepy let's just say, her magic touch almost made me want to strike the wrong pose. I also loved the overall vibe of her class; particularly the music which featured my personal favorite Aimee Mann. The owner, Jennifer Dahlgren offers a full complement of classes-including a series designed just for kids-for people at all levels of their practice. Classes: Everything from the basics to hot yoga Schedule: 3 - 5 classes a day Atmosphere: Light, clean and of course Zen. Price: Variety of passes and packages which range from $16 for a drop in to as low as $10 if you buy a group of 30. Extras: 15 minute meditation class on Sundays at 4:45 is free; donate a percentage of profits to Shoreline Soup Kitchens.

Admittedly I am always nervous when going to New Haven because I never know where to park, which door to go in, which floor to go to, etc. However, the Breathing Room website is EXTREMELY helpful and lists all of the parking options and fees (including the lot right next to the building for only $3). I was there for a 3 day workshop and I had a great time. We were in the aerial studio (although the hammocks were hung up and out of the way) and it was really clean, there were tons of props and the windows and brick were so lovely. There are also plenty of bathrooms, changing areas, a couple of large sitting areas, tons of tasteful retail (shirts, yoga pants, jewelry, essential oils, mala beads, etc), a water bottle filling fountain, and hot tea in little cups is always available. There are 3 yoga rooms, all with their own personalities and lots of cubbies for storing things while you're taking classes. Although I didn't get a chance to visit this time around, there's also a float center that I've heard great things about. I haven't taken classes yet with any of the BR instructors, but I have heard only positive things from the students who have that I'm dying to come back to try some of them! The people who work at the reception desk are all very friendly and helpful and the owner Margot is very welcoming and has created an amazing space with great energy. This place is a true gem!

Then I decided to just go…read morefor it and get the unlimited 2-week new student package, and I have been going for at least 5 days a week since. I was a little intimidated at first, but all of the people there have such varied experience - from beginner to advanced. The classes are non-judgmental and the teachers encourage you to do what's comfortable. They have "consent chips" that you can flip over if you're not comfortable with the teacher adjusting your posture. I do think the class descriptions might be a little misleading. Form and Flow was my first class ever and I could hardly keep up. The classes that are for "all experience levels" sometimes require at least a little bit of knowledge of the poses in order to do what you're supposed to do. Other than that, I think it's safe to say that I'm obsessed.

Just up the road from Ashlawn Farms Coffee in a most picturesque section of Old Lyme, stone walls and multigenerational farms lead you to a farm with a small demure sign. "Yoga" it simply says. Driving slowly onto the property as requested on the website (animals live on the farm and slow driving is requested to protect them) down a long winding driveway through the farm towards, yes, a Big Red Barn rimmed in white holiday lights and surrounded by more old stone walls. The building itself, though looking like an old barn is new (or perhaps just gutted and rebuilt?) so new that one smells fresh unfinished wood inside. The interior is gorgeous with unfinished wide board wood walls, wood flooring, vintage style lighting with old style bulbs for warm glow, and huge picture windows. The crowd as well as the instructor was warm and welcoming. I was so nervous that I would be judged in this very wealthy area for not having the new style brand name yoga pants, or for being a curly headed slightly ethnic looking gal in the land of the whites, or for having a rusty dented up 20 year old honda. Nothing could be further from what I experienced. Diverse body types, friendly mellow people, normal workout clothes, and a very communal type class. Joan engaged us in introductions and had a light and fun attitude throughout the class. To me, it was exactly the right amount of meditative vibe, prompts to release stress, etc, that one expects with yoga without being too spirit chakra pseudo science. Most interesting was a series of balance poses in which we all gathered in a circle, and linked arms. That was different and really lovely to create a sense of community, and to make me feel even more welcome. The class itself was challenging (for me, having not done yoga in years) and yet I felt like I could keep up, slow down if I needed, and follow along. One of the corrections made on my pose was pretty amazing, ad helped my body click. Can't wait to try a daytime class to see the views out those big windows.

I did Bikram yoga for years and I had a feeling that it wasn't good for me. I'm hypermobile and prone to adrenal fatigue, but the instructors just kept pushing me through the strenuous poses and the heat. It was no surprise, really, when I I ended up with migraines and overstretch syndromes. Debi's style is a revelation. She pays attention to each and every student, and while her yoga definitely makes you feel like you've gotten a workout, it feels gentle and supportive instead of strenuous. She promotes the simplicity and inclusiveness of yoga culture, not the spandex and $300 yoga mat approach. Debi also offers Bach Flower Remedies. i think she's one on a only a handful of consultants in the state! I haven't found anyone else in her area. I'm definitely looking forward to learning more about Bach and Polarity Therapy, as well.

After filling out waivers we were given choice of loaner mats and props. Everything was clean and tidy. The group was very diverse in terms of having men, and people of various ages, body types and abilities. We were told this class would be focused more on energy and might not be indicative of a regular workout. The class lasted about an hour, with a very slow start and in general was a little subdued. Debi gave everyone individual energy work touch to start out and she also offers energy work as a service. The whole vibe and energy was a little on the serious side for me, and I don't believe in Reiki, I prefer less focus on chakras and a little more laughter! That being said I wonder if one of the "regular" workouts might be less touchy feely! :) Regardless of my personal spiritual slant, I'd highly recommend this place for the sheer beauty of looking at the water during practice! What a treat.
