I came in to get my nose checked since my breathing isn't great. After an exam I was recommended to get Excision Turbinate (reduction of the turbinates). I wasn't promised it would be the solve, but worth ruling out. I then asked the doctor helping him to help me confirm if my insurance would cover it. After some research it was determined that this procedure would be 100% covered, with no out of pocket payment. When I showed up for the procedure I was asked for $150 for the "Wand" instrument. I explained to them I wasn't informed of any out of pocket costs and they apologized and charged me. I feel that I have a high-tolerance for pain...but this procedure was extremely painful for multiple bursts of times. I was never warned of any discomfort when I agreed to the procedure, and they completely downplayed the process. I came in weeks later for a follow up appointment. At this point there was no noticeable improvement (there still isn't today) and this appointment was to evaluate that and determine next steps. I sat in the doctor's empty room for 40 minutes, waiting for the doctor to appear. At that point I got up and told them I was leaving, and that they really should inform patients of delays. I decided I would not come back after that day based on this plus everything I mentioned above. But it gets worse: 5 weeks after the procedure I receive a bill in the mail for $338.48, and with 2 weeks to pay it. I called UCSF (who triggered the bill) and they said that amount is for both a deductible + co-payment. They then directed me to UHC, who said the same, and told me I can appeal, by mail or fax (that's right, not email, mail) since I was told I wouldn't have any expenses. Honestly, I don't expect that to turn out in my favor. Summary: 3 appointments (time off work), ~$500 in payments via 2 surprise bills, a doctor that didn't show up to my final appointment, a painful procedure that was only mentioned as painful a minute before the procedure, and zero improvement to breathing. Great medical care...poor back office. Dr. Johnson and his medical colleagues did a great job diagnosing my problem and then performing the minor surgery (turbinate reduction). I couldn't be happier. On the other hand, the cost estimating staff and the billing were nightmares. I asked them specifically which billing codes they would submit to my insurance and what they would charge for each. When the insurance explanation of benefits finally arrived both the codes and costs were completely different. So if you use them, get the estimates in writing beforehand including which codes they will bill. Then call up your insurance company and ask them what the negotiated rates are for those codes. Then read your plan benefits carefully...for example, office procedure often don't have deductibles applied to them. Buyer beware! read more

I had a small growth inside by cheek and my dentist recommended it be removed. I was told it would probably take an oral surgeon and cost a lot. However, Dr. Johnson said he could do it, and it was covered by Medicare. The procedure was quick and painless. He had a very delicate "touch". Dr. Johnson recommended that I get a septoplasty to fix my deviated septum, which may have been causing my allergies, nosebleeds, and sinus trouble. After his consultation and doing a lot of research on my own, I took the plunge. It was one of the best, life-changing decisions of my life. Following surgery (about 2 weeks of recovery and 2 years of full healing), the nosebleeds stopped, my allergies were reduced, and I got over seasonal colds much quicker than before. I met Dr. Johnson and his team about 4 years ago. At first I was apprehensive as I had a bad experience with other ENT doctors at Stanford Hospital Emeryville. I was really impressed with Dr. Johnson. He is so thorough and gentle and kind. He takes time to listen to his patients and he has an excellent memory. He remembers everything I said to him 4 years ago. He operated on me in Feb 2022 and let me tell you, I probably called and emailed Dr. Johnson's medical assistant team a million times, and they were so prompt to give me a satisfactory answer every single time. I was randomly assigned to Dr. Johnson by default as I simply wanted to get my ears and hearing checked, possibly cleaned. I have never seen a specialist before and the general physicians I've had throughout my life have never been able to fully assess and relieve my poor hearing. The procedure to clean was a tiny bit painful, but the pain subsided as quickly as he gave me a heads up. Great humor, very knowledgeable, and gentle. On top of that, my hearing ability is 100% thanks to Dr. Johnson. Even the keystrokes on my laptop are more clear/louder and the acoustics of people stepping around the office floor were previously unnoticed. I read some of the reviews and realize that some will have bad experiences for one reason or another. All I can say is that this doctor, for me, was exceptional. To make a long story short, I was three weeks-post nasal surgery for a deviated septum, when on business in CA I suffered a severe nose bleed. After initially going to the ER, the problem persisted. Once I made my way to San Fran a couple of days later, Dr. Johnson's staff was able to squeeze me in due to the nature of my emergency. He was professional, polite, courteous, candid, and so on. And, clearly skilled. He asked many questions that the previous ER docs and urgent care folks hadn't asked. It helped get to the right place. I even needed to come back later that day, once I heard from my primary doctor in NYC, and he said, "Just go hang out, eat some lunch, and come back when you can." I did, and he took me as soon as he could. His medical assistant, Kay (if I'm spelling it right?) was great, as well. Thank you so much for making a very difficult experience for me more manageable. On my second visit back, I even brought some treats from Starbucks - that's how accommodative and friendly they were. It honestly doesn't get better, in my experience. read more

I called for an appointment to see Dr. Jacob Johnson due to vertigo I am experiencing. Prior to seeing me, he'd want me to take a hearing test first following my appointment with Dr. Johnson. However, I had to call his office to inform them that I am running late due to heavy traffic coming from the EastBay, and they said it's fine. So I finally arrived at the Dr's office 20 minutes late, checked in and paid my copayment. While I was filling out some medical forms the receptionist came and told me that they won't be able to give me the hearing test and I need to reschedule my appointment on some other day, after spending 2 1/2 hours on the road. My husband and I were so disappointed and told them that's not acceptable, and we left the doctor's office. On our way out we realized that they just took the copayment without seeing me. We had called and asked them a few times to reverse the charge but they just ignored us. I am sorry but was not impressed with the customer service. read more

You ever go to see a doctor and they just rush you out and prescribe you some drugs then rush you to see their staff to schedule a follow up. Dr. Johnson is awesome. He is smart, never seems rushed, explains things carefully, is funny, perceptive, doesn't gloss over difficulties and is able to deal with an intelligent patient without being threatened. After a very difficult experience with a rushed, uninterested ENT doctor, I can say--although I don't wish my problems on anyone--he has almost made up for a harrowing experience. I saw Dr. Johnson about a sinus problem from an infected tooth. The surgery didn't take care of the problem, as he'd hoped--nor did a root canal. The dentist stubbornly believed that the sinus infection wasn't caused by the tooth and it looked as though the tooth had to be extracted. Many surgeons aren't interested or caring about patients who don't do well after surgery. They go on to the next brutal step without trying, or drop the case, or blame something else, or minimize the difficulty. Dr. Johnson did none of these things. He worked hard to save the tooth. He made personal calls to my dentist when I was in the room. He showed me pictures on the camera of what was going on. And when it was clear the tooth would probably have to be extracted, he said: This is a mess for you. I'm so sorry. Well...it was a mess. Yet his empathy, honesty and sense of reciprocal relation was healing for me. As it turns out, there was a happy ending to the mess. Dr. Johnson was sensitive to the fact that dentists often don't like to be told things by ENT guys. After the dentist kept prolonging the root canal procedure, Dr. Johnson and I got together and talked about my writing a letter to the dentist. Fortunately, I'm a writer and have a fairly good understanding of medicine. The letter worked--although it was a two-month ordeal to get the dentist to complete the root canal. I also noticed that he didn't treat the assistant who followed him around with a computer like a cipher. He said he was lucky to have her except he would probably lose her because he thought she could go to medical school. He even had her help with a procedure. This kind of respect speaks volumes, in contrast to doctors who treat people who record the procedures like secretaries from the 50s. He is expert in his field and very modest. As someone who has been in the helping professions, as well as someone who teaches at the graduate level, I often take a very dim view of most people in his role. Dr. Johnson is a superstar in every way--skill, cerebral intelligence, emotional intelligence, the ability to synthesize, and character. Sinuses are tricky and often as frustrating for the doctor as the patient. Dr. Johnson is really able to be in the moment. Many more than five stars! read more

After a depressingly bad experience with Dr. Steven Sloane, I almost gave up trying to figure out what was wrong with me...until my regular doc recommended I go to Dr. Jacob Johnson instead...I'm sooo glad I did!!!! Not only was I able to get an appointment in a reasonable amount of time, but his office was well-organized, staff was polite, the wait wasn't long, and the doctor himself was polite and attentive, everything you want a doctor to be. He ordered a battery of tests which helped diagnose the problem, without which I'd still be miserable. If only Dr. Sloane had paid as much attention and hadn't ignored my very real symptoms! Dr. Johnson was a breath of fresh air after dealing with a lot of mediocre medical care in this city. He isn't condescending, is open to trying multiple plans of attack, and didn't give me the brush off. Instead of trying to sell me his own patented nostril openers the way Dr. Sloane did, he tried to find out what was causing my breathing problems. Warning: Long review coming... but for anyone having an uvulectomy, you'll appreciate it! I'll just say it... I snore! Maybe I'm the only lone snoring review on here because it can be an embarrassing problem, especially for women. But alas, my pride can not outweigh what a great ENT Dr. Jacob Johnson is! I went in for an uvulectomy on Friday with Dr. Johnson. I will say, it took forever to schedule because the person who normally handles the appointments left and never got back to me. But either way, it was worth the wait. If you don't know what an uvulectomy is, it's when they trim that little punching bag thing in the back of your throat so that it doesn't vibrate when you sleep (no, that little punching bag is NOT your tonsils). Dr. Jacobsen explained the procedure in great detail and gave me the option to be put out or awake. I chose to be awake because I'm too cheap to pay to be put out and insurance doesn't always cover this procedure. I was SO nervous! Basically, they take a laser and trim down the uvula and any necessary soft palate tissue in order to create more space back there. I kept having these thoughts of the laser shooting through my skull and dying in the chair. Dramatic, I know! Dr. Johnson said I would be MISERABLE for at least 10 days. Liquid diet of smoothies and juices was going to be my new best friend for at least a few days. Well, I am happy to say that: 1) Procedure was not as bad as I thought. Dr. Johnson made me feel very comfortable and said he was just going to give me a "cute lil' uvula". Lol! Granted, no one should know what the back of their throat smells like when it's being burned with lasers... but I didn't feel a thing and it was done in 25 minutes! Be prepared for times where the laser pops randomly because of the numbing meds. I wasn't and it was startling. 2) Dr. Johnson purposefully only trimmed tissue from behind the uvula so that it would be more comfortable to eat and drink since there would be less raw tissue exposed. I think this has been my saving grace pain-wise because I only took the liquid vicodin the evening of the procedure and the pain has been tolerable. When I need a little something extra, I just take a couple Tylenol (in pill form, I didn't die). 3) I probably shouldn't encourage everyone to do this... but I couldn't do the smoothie diet, so I started eating other foods like room temperature soup and chewed everything until it was liquified before swallowing. No problems! I ate popcorn the day after the procedure. Granted... very slowly... kernel by kernel... chewed 200 times each... but still! No issues! I couldn't help it... can't watch a movie without popcorn. The pain was the worst in the morning, maybe because my uvula would get dry while sleeping. But I drink a ton of water all day to keep it moist (per Johnson's instructions) and am pretty comfortable all day. The pain is really only present when swallowing... not a chronic, constant pain like I was afraid it would be. Just feels like a sore throat... not like a canker sore, which in my opinion is way worse! I'll update once the swelling goes down to see if it was effective or not, but just wanted to dispell any ideas that uvulectomy's are intolerable. I read a lot of horror stories online before going in, so thought it was important to post one that wasn't so bad! read more

This review is not only for Dr. Johnson but our journey for this entire experience. Symptom: My mom was diagnosed with "Left Superficial Parotidectomy with Facial Nerve Mornitoring." Surgery was pretty much the only option. ------------------------- Finding a surgeon: ------------------------- 1. Our first surgeon - was short and lacked the human touch we needed desperately. We decided we weren't going to settle and started our journey to find the right surgeon. 2. After more than 6 surgeons & 6 months later - from Stanford to UCSF, we met our right doctor, Dr. Jacob Johnson. Why? i) He was intelligent, knowledgable and respected in the field, frequently perform surgeries (huge plus), good communicator and no bs. ii) The human side, he felt personable and often pretty funny person. iii) In the end, it was chemistry. It is hard to explain but it's similar when you meet new people, some people you just click better than others. Doctors works the same way. They are human after all like rest of us. ------------------------- Surgery day: ------------------------- 1. Performed at CPMC. Great & caring staff! 2. Kudos to nurse Adian and nurse Lily. You are miracle workers. 3. Our anesthesiology, Dr. Skinner, was so funny! During times of anxiety and fear, there is no better medicine than a laughter. 4. Dr. Johnson went out of his way to make sure everything was set. He even ask the nurse to call me every two hours to keep me posted on the surgery progress. 5. Dr. Yeung who was assisting was amazing as well. The surgery was one of best outcome one could ask for. Ps. Dr. Johnson is quiet the celebrity at the hospital. All the nurse raves about him. A direct quote from the nurse "he is known for being very detailed in operating room." We knew then we hit the jackpot. ------------------------- Summary: ------------------------- Dr. Johnson is definitely someone who under promise and over deliver. My mom's scar is barely noticeable and recovery is going smoothly. It is rare to come across a doctor who is both great "technical doctor" and great "human doctor." He has both. Long story short: my right ear drum didn't pop on my last flight home to SF from visiting my mom in Alaska. Two ER visits in a 24 hour period (one at 2am, the next at 10pm). The doctor I saw during trip #1 said she didn't have time to deal with my ear, gave me a bunch of drugs and said my ear will probably explode (rupture). She was right, it did, so in for trip #2 when my vicodin wasn't helping anymore. Blood and puss was pouring out of the useless hole for an ear. I felt like there was a jack hammer going to town in my head. During ER trip #2 the attendant called Dr. Johnson at home, and to my surprise Dr. Johnson fit me into his schedule early in the morning the next day. I'm used to the ins and outs of the medical field; I've seen almost every specialist known to man for various ailments; so I expected another doctor trying to get me out of his office as fast as possible. Again, to my surprise he took time to talk about how this all happened, the parts of the body that probably caused it, my treatment options and yadda yadda yadda. I left feeling confident that he was going to be able to restore my hearing. I had surgery the next day. Within a week I could start to hear the high-pitched noises again...not sure if that was a good thing considering I live in the Tenderloin and have to listen to sirens every 2 minutes; but it gave me hope. I go in for my 3-month post-op checkup today, and I'm sure I will pass all the tests with flying colors, all thanks to Dr. Johnson. His staff is funny, helpful, kind and professional. I spent years cutting out activities and sleeping as much as possible to avoid the sore throats, but they never stayed away for long. In 2007 I had a terrible sore throat for 8 months that never went away, despite sleeping 12 hours a night and cutting out all smoking, coffee, and alcohol. Eventually it got to the point where I was sick 2-3 weeks out of the month, no matter what I did. And when I wasn't sick, I was just waiting to get sick again. So I spoke with my Dr. friend about my supposed weak immune system, and he asked the one question that changed everything: "Is it just your throat that's always bothering you, or do you actually feel sick all over?" Huh. I never even considered that there was a difference, but now that you mention it, I guess it's just my throat.. Well, he suggested I make an appointment with an ENT specialist and see about how to rectify the situation. The next morning I did a yelp search and found Dr Johnson. I was amazed at his ratings here. Everyone seems to love him! I was lucky and got someone's cancelled spot and met Dr Johnson the very next morning. Immediately I understood his high ratings. He's a very charismatic and respectful doctor. He's not much of a talker, but he's a great listener. It is now 2 1/2 weeks after surgery and the pain is completely gone. I can't say enough how thankful I am not only that Dr Johnson performed the surgery on me, but that he was available to help if anything went wrong, and was able to answer every single question I could come up with regarding the procedure and the recovery process. For the last 3 years I've been having these weird symptoms and as a result have been going on a city-wide tour of Bay Area doctors, most of which don't even have the decency of at least pretending they give a damn. It was a nice break for a change to visit doctor Johnson and have him actually appear concerned and recommend alternatives to explore what's causing these symptoms. Doctor Johnson explains things in a way that it's easy to understand for us that have limited knowledge of biology and the human body. We still haven't figured out what's causing these symptoms but I feel like he's added some direction to my pursuit by running tests and recommending specialists. I miss Dr. Johson! I saw him a gazillion times back in 2004 when I had strep throat 5 times in one year. I've suffered from horrific sinus problems for about 20 years - pretty much a full-time job at this point. I have allergies and sleeping problems because of it and he thoroughly explained to me what was going on in my nose and throat. He gave me the option of just prescribing me the drugs to relieve the symptoms or go the next step and head to an allergist to figure out exactly what I was allergic to. He said a pencil-like rod with a microwave-emitting tip placed up my nose could be in my future. Since I'm ready to have my nose cut off and vacuum everything out of my sinuses, I went for the allergist option. And he told me to avoid gaining weight (by having children or becoming obese) because sleep apnea would mess me up even further. His colleague, noting my incredible height of 5'10", encouraged me to have children and then offer them as recruits for his rowing team. He is very specific, thorough and will explain things so that you are able to fully understand what's going on. He performed a tonsillectomy on me at Pacific Heights Surgery Center and both Dr. Johnson, his staff and Pacific Heights Surgery Center's staff were all on top of it and amazing. As this was my first surgery, I was nervous and worried but after the surgery, rest assured, this was definitely worth it. ONE HOUR OF WAIT while listening to the doctor chatting to his staff and dropping F bombs. I have just walked out of Dr Johnson's office after 30+ minutes of sitting in the patient room and overall over one hour since I arrived to the office. While sitting in the patient room that is conveniently located in front of the claims desk for the medical office I heard doctor Johnson drop F bombs when discussing his client. After being 48 minutes late he leisurely stood in front of the claims processing decks bantering with his coworker, laughing and discussing other patients previous procedures. I walked out of the patient's room, walking right past Dr. Johnson, after being unattended to for over THIRTY MINUTES and he neither greeted me nor apologized for the wait and just carried on chatting with his staff. I called the doctor's office to make an appointment for a colleague who lost his voice, I remembered my miserable days with recurring sinus infections years ago. I remember I couldn't get rid of the one for so long that I was constantly congested, had really bad headaches and no energy whatsoever. Dr. Johnson was very patient, attentive and open for prescribing the medications that I found on my desperate search that are not commercially available, but only available at online pharmacies. After that nasty one was finally gone, I didn't have any more problems. AMAZING. Dr. Jacob Johnson is the most fantastic ENT we have seen and we've been through a few, as my son has had 5 ear surgeries in his 9 years. He was the first doctor to thoroughly examine him and consider all of the possible CAUSES to his ear issues, rather than just treatments of the manifesting problems. He considered everything. He also takes his time with patients, explains things very clearly, is warm and so very smart in his approach. Anytime surgery has been necessary, the outcomes have been much better, with far more minimal scarring for example (scar tissue buildup was one issue for us). Also, after surgery, even if on a weekend, he calls to check in and is very warm and kind, rather that stiff and formal. The only downside is that he is not always easy to get into and you usually have to wait for him a bit. I tell my kids (about the waiting) that he is taking his time with other patients, as he does with us- for that I am willing to wait. P.S. He is also NOT an over-prescriber of antibiotics as MANY docs are. read more

Dr Johnson is a sharp doctor indeed and Blessing to all his patients. He detected my thyroid problem something my ex general physician did not and b/c of this I am being treated for this properly. I second these wonderful ***** reviews for Dr. Jacob Johnson and thank him for having the 007 doctor gift. He is surely on top of his craft and a charming electrifying always in a happy joy joy mood, He is just great all around person as he is a caring on top of his game professional. This is the first time I've used Yelp to find a doctor and I'm happy to report that it was a great experience. I felt like Dr. Johnson really wanted to get to the bottom of my sinus problems and offered alternatives and suggestions. My last doctor kept throwing Z-Packs at me and never tried to help me get to the root of my sinus pain. I feel very confident Dr. Johnson knows what he is talking about and will help me get past this. I will make sure to update as treatment continues for all of my fellow Yelpers. read more
