I found Andrew to be very knowledgeable and helpful and he offered new ideas too. We haven't got to the stage of doing the actual build yet, but I'll be sure to post a review based on the quality of building work. Based on just the consultation though, I'm sure the building work will be finished to a high quality. They are Auckland based and not far from us, located in Avondale. Cheers!

My home is near perfect, and it is laid out just the way I like it, but apparently babies prefer…read morecarpets to shiny wooden floorboards. Plus the Auckland winters and a carpet free lounge also don't mix... But these are just facts my wife provided me, as she elbowed me in the ribcage as I rushed to go play golf. So on my way to the club, I decided it would be the right thing to do, and I made a slight detour to stop at Flooring Xtra in Albany. The only reason I knew about them in the first place, is because they are opposite the golf shop. The shop doesn't look like much from street level, but once you're inside, it is filled with samples and off cuts for you to feel and look at. The staff seems well informed, and the prices appeared reasonable. It is a good place to get valuable information about carpeting or any flooring issues you might have. In the end I decided on getting a cheap rug; this way my son can do with it as he likes, and we can put it away in the summer.

Buying power tools or spending my money on new golf clubs? This is a question I ask myself every…read moretime I go shopping for new clubs. My aversion to manual labour started at an early age, I realised that I don't like hard work. Work of the sweaty work kind, not the stuff writers, TV directors or marketing people call work. Work that low income people do where you use muscles and sweat. Think mining, tree chopping, building and basically anything where you need a white Hiace Toyota van. This doesn't mean I don't do it, I just don't like doing it, and I'm seldom prepared for the job at hand. You just can't do handy man work with a MAC and iPhone in tow. So, when I needed to sand down an old chest, the option of using my hands was out of the question. I knew of North Harbour Hire, so I stopped there after work to get a sander, and they were more than helpful. They even told me how to use it (Wonder if the little croc on my shirt was an indication that I wouldn't know what to do?) and it was much cheaper than buying my own.

We heard all about the All-American Soap Box Derby held at local Whenuapai School, what an awesome event and what a great cause for this company to sponsor. A work colleague is getting his fencing done at the moment and has used them for this work, he's very satisfied. This company has been in business for over 65 years, so they know a thing or two about their timber products. Their yard has a huge range of different sizes and grades of wooden planks and posts for any project and all the advice to go with it. I usually leave these visits up to husband since I don't know much about timber yards, but this seems like a great place to start if you live local to Whenuapai.

After wasting a bus trip based on the recommendation off a previous Resene location, all I…read moreencountered at this Resene store location was unprofessional excuses and INCOMPETENCE! I needed a color-matching to a sample I brought with me, and the color-matcher '"professional" on hand, named Andrew, was incapable of being able to help me. Apparently, Resene is NOT well-equipped or capable of meeting customer needs at anytime of the day. Their lights are not well-calibrated and apparently they rely on sunlight for optimum results. My, how ancient! In the United States -- where I'm proudly from -- color-matching paint is NEVER an issue at places like Home Depot or other paint retailers. But New Zealand continues to struggle without success to catch-up with the 21st century! And today made me realize I can NEVER count on most New Zealand services to be prompt, efficient, or satisfactory to any degree! As Andrew rambled on about the poor quality of surrounding light, I just stood there dumb-founded realizing I was, yet, encountering another Kiwi excusing himself from being in any form effectual with his job. Without any further acknowledging of him, I just turned-around and left. His incompetence couldn't even halt me half-way to exclaim some other resolution to my issue. Truly, what POOR customer service! Ladies and gentlemen... HR professionals of the world: This is the so-called illustrious "Kiwi Experience" New Zealand employers expect of their native employees, and if you as a foreigner living in New Zealand don't possess these "qualifications," consider yourself excessively unemployed! "Kiwi Experience" expects you practice effectively: Laziness, incompetence, excuses, lack of fore-sight, not being proactive, thinking squarely and never outside of the box, quitting on customer service before even trying, and volley-balling customers from one salesperson to another in order to avoid - that's right - working. Avoid this Resene store. If not, avoid all of them!
