This is a spot not to miss when you are in the Jackson area or on the way to Teton National Park from Jackson. If you are into dishes, you will find this hatchery to be quite intimidating! It's a federally owned hatchery that is producing two local types of fish to put back in the wild! We were provided a 20 minute tour by Emma. The tour was very informal. I could have been on the tour longer as was so interesting. After the tour, you can walk around the museum and hatchery. I'd not interested in a tour, you can walk around by yourself. At this place you can even fish in the small pond in the back, although I hear the fish are smart so you may not catch one! Open daily 8-5. read more

We went to this Jackson Hatchery on our last day in town to kill time. We met Paul, who took us and a couple other families around to tour the place. You could sense his passion for what he does and he truly made the quick trip enjoying & informative. So much so that according to our 11 year old son Liam, going to the hatchery and meeting Paul was the highlight of our WY-MO-ID trip. read more

I drove by this fish hatchery several times during my commute between the town of Jackson and Grand Teton National Park. One day I decided to make a quick stop here. The Jackson National Fish Hatchery raises cutthroat trout which are native to nearby Snake River. Their efforts are all about improving the fish population in the Snake River. Fish stocking occurs between May and October. I have visited hatcheries before and have always enjoyed learning about the process of how they breed fish. On the site is the hatchery building, outdoor raceways and a pond in the back. There are fish & wildlife employees on site to answer questions and show you around. If you want to fish in the Sleeping Indian Pond, you need your own fishing equipment and have a Wyoming fishing license. Decided to stop in and was pleasantly surprised with the knowledge that was shared. We learned a lot from Paul our tour guide. He was a wealth of knowledge and this was a nice and interesting stop learning about the fish they are trying to preserve. The cool thing is for those fishermen you can fish in the stocked pond here for free and keep one. I was so interested in listening I didn't even get a photo of the place but I feel it's definitely worth a stop. Great for kids and they are open 8-5. read more

Just north of Jackson, about 5 miles by car, you can visit this govt funded trout hatchery solely for conservation. We were enroute to Yellowstone and had time to kill. 30 mins is about right for time here. You take a paved road down to the hatchery And they do have a unisex bathroom there. A small room in a cabin-like structure has a nice exhibit of the various trouts for you to ID as well animal scat. The only person there was the mechanic who also with 2 biologist and a biologist-mgr run the facility, take care of the fishes with cleaning and feeding. He was nice to spend time with us answering the questions. They care for about 350K frys which are released at about 17 mos., they're releasing some next week with survival rate of 96%. read more

So amazing that our nation has hatcheries all around the country. This one in Jackson breeds Snakehead Cutthroat Trout for area rivers, reservoirs, and reservations. The visitors center is manned by volunteers so call ahead if you would like a guided tour. Understand they are not always there. On our visit we had a lovely volunteer couple to help us learn about the hatchery. Getting there: Once you turn off the main highway to the hatchery, follow the signs and veer left and drive up the hill until the large parking area for visitors. Then follow the nature path down to the visitors cabin. What you will see: A demonstration pond stocked with trout, raceways where trout grow in size before being transported to area rivers, and a hatchery building where the fish eggs are hatched. Great for nature enthusiasts as there are expansive views of Jackson Hole. read more

A good side stop, especially if you are into fish. When I went there wasn't any real visitor center, just a shack with a television and video running. Regardless, it's worth it to stop and take a look at what's going on. (Their website indicates that the hatchery will be closed until July 2010.) read more
