Service was excellent from the start--we arrived early after an overnight flight and were pleasantly surprised to be checked in early, which made a huge difference after traveling. Clean rooms, great amenities, and an unbeatable location. Would absolutely stay here again, especially for a family trip or a holiday visit to Amsterdam.

The whole thing is set up so you don't have to interact with anyone, you just put your money in the machines and watch it disappear. It reeks of cigarette smoke, and upstairs is the smokers' room with two more roulette wheels and more slot machines. That room is even stinkier. I liked that they were friendly to me as a newbie. I don't like that the roulette wheel takes your money every spin even when you don't actually bet anything. Every spin you lose €2 whether you do something or not. It also doesn't tell you how much money you have left. Since the interface is very confusing it's easy to lose all your money no matter how you try to bet. There is a coffee machine and cheap cookies and soda to comfort you for losing money, but there are no cocktail waitresses or service of any kind. We did have to wander around quite a bit to find the bar that contained liquor, but we were persistent! Airport was clean and all employees we encountered were pleasant. We waited about an hour and a half in a very hot line to clear immigration. None of the self-service kiosks were open. When the Schengen line was totally clear, I hoped they would start taking people from our line; no such luck. The gentleman who helped us was nice, but it took way too long to get to him. It is very convenient that the train station is right there in the airport, though I wish the platform system was made a bit more clear no the kiosks when buying tickets. For those of us who don't have this type of transit in our home cities (Los Angeles), it made transportation tough. In fact, we got on the wrong train and what should have been a 15 minute ride from Schiphol to Centraal became an hour-long detour in the broiling heat.

That said, if you're connecting through Amsterdam after a long overnight flight, be prepared for a lot of walking. The airport is huge, and getting between gates can feel like a workout. Our biggest frustration was immigration. When we arrived, the electronic passport control kiosks were not operating, but it wasn't immediately clear what passengers were supposed to do. Everyone from our flight ended up being redirected into the manual passport control line, which created a bottleneck and added stress to an already tight connection. One interesting part of the trip was boarding directly from the tarmac rather than through a jet bridge. After being bused out to the aircraft, we climbed the stairs and boarded from the ground, which offered a completely different perspective of the airport operations. The funniest part was our connection. After walking what felt like miles through the terminal, we boarded a bus that drove us all over the tarmac and even got stuck in what I can only describe as tarmac traffic. When we finally arrived, our next aircraft was parked directly across from the plane we had just gotten off. After all that, we couldn't help but laugh. It felt like we had taken a sightseeing tour of the airport just to end up almost back where we started. Overall, Schiphol is a nice airport with good facilities. Just wear comfortable shoes, allow extra connection time, bring patience, and expect to get plenty of steps in.
