Stopped in for a pint and some pub food, we were not disappointed. Fantastic bar tenders, service is quick and casual. Richelle got a Valley girl and I got a Leichthaus (lighthouse). I thought the Valley Girl was on the sour side for me. I liked the Leichthaus, crisp and clean, 1st time with that style, but I like the Kolsch style beers. I chose the southern Ohio poutine, it fantastic, gravy made with their Appervation Imperial Stout. The gravy is thick, full imperial stout flavor with a note of bourbon. The portion they serve is enough for two. Richelle got the mystic wings with garlic parmesan sauce. Fantastic idea the wings are very nice without sauce, then you only need to dip the for an added flavor element. Garlic Parmesan is thick, almost like yogurt, it has a quick hit of spicy garlic, then it goes away. A visit to Athens Ohio is so worth the drive, a picturesque Hallmark town nestled next to Ohio University makes it a beautiful storybook town. With so many options to chose from for a meal, we settled on Jackie O's. The atmosphere was nice, it felt like a vibrant college town pub, with a menu that is extensive and food that is outstanding. The Barborak Ribeye Sandwich was so good that once I picked it up I couldn't put it down until I was done. The Appalachian Chicken, was a dish my guest had, OMG this sandwich was so big and my guest usually doesn't finish her sandwiches, there wasn't a bite left. It was as good as it looked. The cheese curbs, the best in the State, I've never had any that had so much flavor. The service was fast, friendly and attentive, always making sure us and other guests were being taken care of. Other dishes we had were the Public House Burger, a tasty and well built sandwich, which was enjoyed by my guests. The poke stack was a work of art, a unique meal as beautiful as delicious. He was very friendly. I tried all of the hazy IPA's and stuck with his recommendation. We had good food and good beer. I had heard a lot about Jackie O's and had tried a few of their beers in Columbus, so I was really wanting to visit. I had been in Athens last week but didn't get a chance to stop by here. It was still early afternoon when my friends and I stopped by. We had already eaten but I was still a bit hungry. My lunch was not very filling. My friend got 16 Husky. It was a FAF that day, which meant that it was $4. FAF means fresh as *insert expletive here. College students probably find this abbreviation amusing. 16 Husky is an IPA. She had been there before and had tried a lot of their drinks. My other friend and I decided to split on a beer sampler. They don't really have flights, so I found the sampler pricier than I would've liked. I didn't pay for it but it must've been over $15. We chose 6 of them, but I still felt like this was more than I had spent at breweries in Columbus. We got Gold Denim, Who cooks for you, coffee Bourbon Barrel, Apple brandy, Kinda Fuzzy, and PawPaw. I had tried Cool Beans and Razz Wheat before. Razz wheat is my favorite so I ended up really loving Kinda Fuzzy, since it is also fruity. Both coffee bourbon barrel and apple brandy are stouts, but I ended up really loving bourbon barrel. I'm not much of a beer drinker these days, but I don't mind trying stuff. I also ordered the Reuben spring rolls. Wow! What a selling point! It was creative and tasted very good. I was full at that point. Our waitress was super nice and smiley and checked up on us a lot. She gave us good suggestions and was really informed about the menu. We waited but five minutes for a table, but Athens is a small Appalachian town. I can't imagine places getting extremely busy here (in comparison to Columbus). They've got a lot of vegetarian options which is not typical for a brewery but is definitely a selling point for your friends who do not eat meat. It's not a huge space but people seem to eat and leave. They strung up lights all over the ceiling and hung up Pathos plants. It was cute! I saw a lot of families. Parents with young kids or with college aged students. There were older adults and some young adults. It's a cool hangout spot! I saw a lot of people eating the pizza. College town is a college town, and it's built to serve a bunch of college students. They do have a fantastic selection of beverages on top. They make solid very dark beverages. Imperial stouts, Russian stouts, good stuff. We had to work with a very constrained diet and we were still able to do OK there. they had some very creative dishes. read more

I like the beer at Jackie O's Brewpub and unlike as others have said the service is not so poor. It's not like the typical bar in Athens. Thankfully it's not taken over by frat boys and sorority hos. It's more of a hipster crowd. There's good quality beer and it's a pretty chill atmosphere there. I recommend anything as long as it includes beer. Pretty much all their beers are good. The Black Betty is strong, but it's pretty good though. Another one is the Hogwash. It has hints of lavender and maple syrup. The Mystic Mama IPA is popular. It's bitter with hints of amarillo, pine needles, and tangerine. The Oil of Aphrodite is real good. It's made with Belgian Candi Syrup and black walnuts. The Paw Paw Wheat is another good one. It's very sweet. The Raspberry Wheat is the best and my favorite of all of these. It has the right amount of raspberry flavor. They sell growlers for $5. You can avoid the charge by bringing in a clean and empty one. It also has lots of good food. The black bean hummus is $5. It comes with pita wedges. The hummus wrap is a great vegetarian item. It's about $8 and comes with onions, peppers, and spinach. The breads are mostly without oil and sweeteners, and are vegan. They are good about not wasting food. It uses spent hops in the pizza dough, which sounds cool and gives it a little beer taste. It doesn't have too much food since people are most interested in the beer. That's okay because the beer is all good. I recommend coming at the less busy times. It certainly is better than other bars around here. This is a nice change of scenery. read more

I've had Jackie O's products before I went to the brewery. We were only 5 minutes away from Devil's Kettle and thought why the hell not and visit this place while we are in town? The pub was steady but we managed to find seating in at the bar. My boyfriend and I only wanted to do a tasting. We did a tasting/flight of 4: -Cool Beans- Golden Ale conditioned on Ridge Runner Honduran Coffee, notes of fruity chocolate. -Moment of Clarity- Double of IPA, Citrus, dark hops. -OH Aphrodite- Brewed with local black walnuts -Bourbon Barrel Hibernator- Imperial Brown Ale aged in bourbon barrels for 20 months. So, I've been lucky enough to see a few brewpubs this past year. I'd have say, this one ranks as one of my top 5. It's a great experience. We first stopped at the brewery for a quick visit. It's just as you'd expect, long on beer, short on food. Worth the visit if you want to tour the brewery. Next, we headed over to the public house. It's got a nice, laid back feel to it. By the time happy hour rolled around, the place was packed. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Our server told us the Jackie O story and made some excellent recommendations. A couple of things that stand out for me... they locally source (as much as possible - we live in Ohio) their ingredients and they make most of their menu items from scratch. A big win for them and a bigger win for customers like me. Jackie O's has a 30 beer tap list on the far side wall of the bar. That makes it pretty easy to put together a beer flight. During a long trip today we decided to get a late lunch at Jackie O's. While the overall decor, and experience was pleasant the food was leaving you disappointed. Multiple appetizers that were ordered were not "bad" but just missed the mark. The cheese curds have a strange texture, and tasted more like fried beer batter. Pizza had good intention but was kinda burnt and had this overpowering oregano flavor. I feel that this place has good bones, but it needs to find its purpose. It tries to be a pub crossed with a high end bar, but ends up being a sad middle ground. Jackie O's aka one of my old college hangouts O'Hooley's & the largest craft brewery in Athens. We stopped by on a Saturday during Ohio Brew Week & was packed, it was hot summer day, so good to be inside in cold pub & enjoy some of their beers. I started with a flight of Kinda Fuzzy, Mandala Citra, Sah-wheeeat & Meigs County Black IPA. The Meigs County IPA was my favorite, I love my IPA's, it was so smooth it being an IPA, did it have special Meigs county ingredients in it? Those from the area or OU grads will know what I mean. We also enjoyed the Pesto mania pizza, which has homemade dough with spent grain from their brewing process, great pizza, local, fresh ingredients. So out of the three Jackie O's in town (the taproom at the brewery, and this place is technically separate from the public house next door) this one is hands down my favorite. Each location has its own beer list; what you can get where varies but tbh you just can't go wrong with anything they brew. What makes this location the best is (a) the available seating and (b) the food. Had the Jackie Cristo at the taphouse and it was great, but then stopped in here and tried the ruben eggrolls and... wow. Wow. It's a 2+ hour drive from Dayton, but We. Will. Be. Back. Always loved their cans, but that's just the tip of the iceberg compared to what's on tap on site! Conveniently, if there's a wait (and less than 30 min on a Saturday evening is not bad at all), you can hop next door to the public house and get a drink while waiting for a text that your table is ready. We were here twice this weekend, and it was awesome! See Taylor at the bar, she was very personable and attentive. The Brewpub is more of a brewery feeling to me, limited food menu and ~15 beers on draft. We watched the US Women's World Cup final game here and they had a projector going and opened that day solely for the game. Very fun vibe and people. The Public House is a restaurant, but it is still not stuffy at all. We sat at the bar and had great service, would recommend their pizzas and fried curds! Stick around late night for $2 14-oz beers from 9-11 PM, that deal cannot be beat and I really like that they offer it. Good opportunity to try different beers they have on draft for the price of a normal taster. We hope to be back if we are ever in the area or hiking at Hocking Hills again! read more

One of the best things about Athens is JackieO's! They seem to use local businesses for their meat & bakery items and it's all so good! They brew their own beer with 30 types! We had the Cajun chicken sandwich, kids grilled cheese, Potter melt, and a burger. The meat tasted fresh and was perfectly cooked. The bread and buns tasted fresh and homemade. I could go on and on about the fries! Crispy, but soft and salty! (There is a $1.50 upcharge to fries--sandwiches usually come with chips. They are worth every penny!) you can also substitute the chips with the seasonal vegetables, which was smashed butternut squash. The pizza at the table next to us looked amazing too! Well, we're not hungry or thirsty anymore. There was A LOT left of the meat and cheese tray...and my husband LOVES meat and cheese trays, so that says a lot about the quality of the meats and cheeses provided. The drinks were fine, but I ordered "Jack & Coke's," so it wasn't challenging in any way. Music sounded like hyper elevator music, service was mostly non-existent, but it was Thursday night. They don't really have table service, at least on Thursday night. There was condensation on a vent above my friend's head, so he got dripped on all night. They also keep the door wide open for smokers, and so their smoke comes in the restaurant, which is super lame. Pizza was sub-par, and pizza is pretty easy to manage. Can't believe I only visited Jackie O's for the first time this year! Took my parents and my kids here for an early dinner before we caught my daughter's play. There is a strong focus on fresh, local ingredients, which I've come to expect in Athens. I had the roasted chicken and chèvre salad and it was outstanding! Warm, quaint & cozy brewery to meet with friends in downtown Athens. The wood from ceiling to floor was clean and gleaming. There are SO many interesting and uniquely different beers to try here! Thankfully they offer flights, so we were able to sample several before choosing. A couple of them did have higher alcohol contents of 9&11%, but 4-4oz pours was $10. I liked every one of them though. You need to go to the bar to order anything. You walk in and seat yourself wherever is available. The staff is quick to clean tables once people leave, which is nice. There's a small bar menu with apps, pizzas, sandwiches and salads and the ingredients are locally sourced. We tried the Rueben egg rolls, fried cheese curds, and a pizza with a sauce that had a nice zip to it. All were tasty options to enjoy with our beer. But then came ordering from the menu and man was it a hard choice. I chose something from the vegetarian section, a melt my pesto sandwich. And for a $3 up-charge got a side of tomato bisque soup instead of the regular chips. It was definitely worth the $3! And to sub chips for fries is only a $1.5 up-charge. My mom ordered pork tacos (they were a special) and they came with a side of chips and salsa. She enjoyed them and couldn't even finish all the tacos they were so filling. I feel like I didn't appreciate Jackie O's enough when I was a student. Now that I'm an alumna, I always make a stop there when I come to town. From the food and craft beer to the laid back ambiance, Jackie O's is pure Athens perfection. My favorite food selections are the Deep Friend Pickles, Pesto-mania pizza and The Reuben. All are drool worthy but their pizza stands out as one of the best in town. Jackie O's Razz Wheat was the first craft beer I'd ever had. We went to Jackie O's on a Saturday afternoon for drinks and food. It was the first 80 degree day of the season so we wanted to sit on the patio. We ordered drinks and food at the bar inside (they don't actually take orders on the patio) and waited for our food to come while enjoying a gorgeous day. First, the patio has a bee problem. Not necessarily their fault, but definitely made sitting outside less enjoyable. This would have been completely fine and not have impacted my review of the establishment, but it was a slippery slope downhill from there. When our food arrived, it did not come with silverware or napkins. When I inquired about both the server acted like it was a ridiculous request. We were also missing a meal. Four of us had ordered food but only three meals came out. And my burger was entirely overcooked (I specifically asked for medium, it came out well-done). Again, I honestly could have overlooked all of this, but then... My friend went down to the bar to check on our friend's meal (very politely, as we were not even actually upset about it) and overheard our server talking crap about our table and telling her "how she couldn't do anything to make us happy." We promptly requested our bills after this and I will probably never go back. Is the beer good? Yes. Is the food good? Eh. Is the service good? Hell no. read more

The place is representative of a very comfortable Micro brewery. Much a step above most of the Pubs in this College town. Lunch was had with a cheese plate served with different flavors of Hummus and some delicious tapenade with Pita pieces. there were a number of families there enjoying the food as well. I had a flight with six beers and as a whole they are well done and really enjoyed the flavors. The seasonal paw paw beer was tasty, but watch out as it is a very high gravity concoction. Back for dinner the next day and had the pizza which was thin and crispy with just the right amount of toppings and pretty creative. Prices were extremely reasonable. Jackie O's has an excellent beer selection, particularly if you're into darker beers. The food is bar food, but definitely on the good side. The decor is the warm homey atmosphere you'd expect from a bar. I don't know what you're doing in Athens, OH (unless you're visiting your in-laws like I was), but Jackie O's is well worth a stop if you're already in the neighborhood. As soon as you walk in, Jackie O's is a great brew pub. They make their own beer, play sports on the TVs (at a reasonable volume), and made tables out of giant barrels. It's not the most raucous bar in town, but it is a great place to drink with friends. The beer menu is in constant rotation. I had the opportunity to try three of them. The Bourbon Barrel Brick Kiln Barley Wine was delicious, but very high alcohol content. Barley wines are so named because they have an alcohol content more similar to wine than to beer, but they are certainly beers. This one had a nice dark flavor tinged with bourbon. I also tried the Burnin' Hill. It had a nice smoky taste, but be warned, it is very smoky-- like a campfire. The Chomo-lung-ma is a nice brown ale. Be warned, the beers when I went in December all fell into the darker beers category. If you're not a fan of dark beers, the selection was limited. I had a reuben sandwich, which was appropriately greasy and filling. My wife had the fish and chips which were fine. They serve homemade kettle chips and those are fantastic. Lastly, the food is all reasonably priced ($9 or $10 for a meal), but the beer is a little more expensive. $5 or $6 a glass is a fair price for the craft brews they serve, but a bit high if you compare it to Miller Lite-- which you should because this is far, far better beer. read more
