Okay, I'll stop right there because we're talking about gruesome murders that took place in 1888 by the clever and unknown "Jack". I booked this tour through Viator and our assigned guide was Ivan. We began the tour with a backstory of the neglected town of Whitechapel and continued the tour following in "Jack's" footsteps. Out of all of the tours we had in London, this was the most educational and compelling. Parts of the tour include photos of the women that were brutally murdered and Ivan would warn us to look away if we weren't interested in seeing them. I would highly recommend this tour, and I'm not a true crime podcast girlie. read more

Good, but not great - that's my assessment. In late April last year, I visited the UK for the first time and was blessed with an exceptionally gorgeous spring evening in London to learn about London's (and probably the world's) most famous and notorious serial killer. Arriving (fashionably) early and frantically trying to figure out where the tour began (part of the reason I'm giving four, rather than five stars), the tour itself, along with the tour guide (John) was quite thorough, engaging and humourous ("has anyone ever surgically removed a kidney before?") though I didn't really learn anything that I hadn't garnered from my own research (shame on me for reading up too much beforehand). Nonetheless, it was quite the treat to see the many haunts and hideaways of Spitalfields and Whitechapel, which surely were much eerier and seedier 130+ years ago when Jack the Ripper prowled the streets. It merits mentioning (this should be obvious) that this tour about a serial killer who literally ripped out various organs from unsuspecting prostitutes after slashing them to death that this is NOT a 'family-friendly' tour and I couldn't help but snicker (to myself) at the American couple who brought their two sons (neither of which appeared older than 10) along and felt the need to cover their ears/eyes for more than half the depictions and descriptions - yes, post-mortem imagery is shown in graphic detail on tour. I can't imagine what nightmares these boys must have had...but of course that's a jab at my fellow countrymen and nothing against this highly recommended tour. read more

Ever since I was a little kid, Jack the Ripper has always fascinated me. Yes, I was the weird eight-year-old that had to get a special permission slip from my parents stating that it was okay for me to do a book report on the subject matter in elementary school, but both sides let it happen! Fast forward thirty-ish years later and I finally get my chance to take the tour while in London. Now, there are a ton of Jack the Ripper tours - in fact, while you're taking this one, you'll encounter/pass about 20 more throughout the night. Everyone is respectful of each other's space, however, it's crazy how many people seek this out and that it's lucrative enough that there are multiple options to learn about this infamous serial killer. John was our guide on this trip and I couldn't have been happier. Not only was he armed with a wealth of knowledge and historical facts, he pointed out the important landmarks tied to the murders and had plenty of gruesome photos to really help paint the grim reality that was Whitechapel in the late 1800's. The tour itself is about two and half hours depending on the size of the group, the amount of questions asked and how fast people get from stop to stop. Make sure to wear comfy shoes, bring some water and be prepared to see some interesting parts of the city that you might have missed if didn't know they were there. This was the most riveting and engaging tour and my tour guide Jeremy was the crux of this he was a genuine historian not simply a paid actor he cared about the case and the history of white chapel and he used that enthusiasm to create a captivatingly riveting experience throughout even though it was a 2 hour tour it felt little more than 10 minutes because I was so enthralled with his presentation. Then on top if all this he went the extra mile to sing happy birthday for my girlfriend who I had taken there to conclude her big day he got the whole group involved it made her night and seeing her smile like that made mine as well. So I would entirely recommend fervently that you go on this tour atleast once for the experience alone and if you can take the tour with Jeremy for an amazingly unforgettable night. read more

From having an amazing, highly knowledgeable guide (John,) to the unbelievably inexpensive admission (£10,) there is no better way for a crime buff to spend a night in London. The history lesson was amazing. I'm a visual person, so this tour gave me such a clear picture of what happened and made me feel like I had gone back in time. I really appreciated the photos of victims and locations that were passed around to give you an even better idea of the events that took place. A lot of the locations look very similar to the way they did back then, but for those that don't, the photos really help give extra perspective. Thank you so much for creating such an amazing tour. We did a lot of research before paying for a tour. There are several different Jack the Ripper tours in London, but we wanted one that didn't involve a lot of costumery, gimmicks or shenanigans. We found that in this tour. We got started right on time, and our guide (I really wish I could remember his name) had us moving at a pretty good pace, which helped keep us warm in the cold London night. There are several stops along the way, and the guide imparts a lot of good detail about the murders, the activities surrounding the investigation, and the progression of thought from the beginning to the end. He also had several pictures that he passed out to the group at each stop. Some of them were ordinary - what this neighborhood looked like during the time of the murders, where that building once stood - but he also had the more grisly ones - such as the crime scene photos that you may be familiar with. Actually, at one point, he passed around two pictures that I had never seen before (I've done a fair amount of reading on the murders). It was interesting because these pictures offered a view of the crime scene that helped me understand some of the things that were discussed in the books, but were never made clear in the pictures included within. There were a couple of kids on the tour, so the guide was discreet in handing out the pictures, letting the parents decide whether or not to show the kids (they didn't, thank goodness). He answered questions, and kept the tour interactive, which was nice. It's much better than being lectured for an hour or so. In the end, I felt like I learned some new points, and had some things to think on, should my fascination with the murders come up again. I would recommend this tour - in fact, I DID recommend this tour the next day, to a group on the Changing the Guard tour with us! I will say, though, that I felt like the tour was larger than they said it'd be online, but at least it was still manageable. read more

It should be noted that the pace of the tour is brisk with no accommodation for slower walkers or age differences in the large group. We dropped from the tour, as did others. I've done many various tours around other cities in America, and this tour here in London, was by far, the best, and it's all thanks to our tour guide! While the subject matter is all very familiar to me, Jeremy, delivered an experience that my friend and I absolutely loved. It was like finding out about Jack the Ripper for the first time again. Jeremy was informative, funny, and kept the group involved and energetic the entire time. He was considerate for the other tours and groups we crossed paths with, made sure the group was always safe and accounted for as we traveled through the streets, always spoke at the perfect volume to where everyone could hear clearly, yet still kept the enticing drama of the dark subject material between the hilarity of his sharp-wit and personality. Thoroughly enjoyed the tour and John our guide. Disappointed he couldn't arrange some fog that evening but perhaps next time. I liked the fact that there are still a few remnants of that era left. It is a tragedy that we are tearing down so much because history suffers for that. Of all the tours to do in London this one of the best. You walk around the streets in a group and relive the terror. If you're into dark stuff like me you'll absolutely love. The tour guide was super into it, wearing a neat outfit and using a portable projector. The guide was so knowledgable and enthusiastic when giving the tour I couldnt help but get wrapped up in it. After the tour my boyfriend and I talked to the guide and the actor he had with him during the tour. He told us that he's been into Jack the Ripper since he was six and studied his case for years. After doing a lot of research prior to booking a Jack the Ripper Tour, I picked Discovery Tours because they seemed to have the most authentic appearing experience. They didn't talk about gimmicks and the price couldn't be beat. At the very least, I knew we were paying a small amount of money, so my expectations were not very high... Our experience, blew me out of the water. My husband and I had a delayed flight and were unable to make it to our original tour. We called and were greeted kindly and they helped us reschedule for the following evening (actually insisted that we reschedule to get the best possible experience). We enjoyed the tour as we walked through the various locations, led by John, on an unforgettable tour. The pictures helped the facts come to life. A great evening walking through the depths of hell, that is the story of Jack the Ripper. Informative and entertaining, Angie painted the picture of what White Chapel was like in the late 1800s. The nights started off with us having to catch up to the tour due to enjoying ourself across town drinking. The "catch-up instructions" provided in the confirmation email were perfect. Although you cannot get too lost as you will see many groups of people being herded around the locals living out their daily lives in the now trendy White Chapel. Me and my wife hopped over from Paris to London for the next leg of our honeymoon. After a week of walking all up and down the Seine we were exhausted but there was no time to waste so after hopping off the Eurostar and grabbing some food at a pub we were off to the Jack the Ripper Tour. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect as we meandered towards Whitechapel. We got a little lost along the way but that was our own ignorance that led us astray. It was when I saw the man in the top hat and overcoat that I knew we were in the right spot. I don't want to give too much away about the tour. But you really do go to the locations of the murders and you get to feel what it was like back in Whitechapel back during the murders. At least as much as possible considering new construction and modern additions. Our guide went by Johnny. The man was simply fantastic, recalling all the facts from memory and regaling us with vivid descriptions. Using the aid of pictures and 'rippervision' Johnny took us on a journey. With the aid of another actor who had a few parts to play, who was also very enthusiastic about his part. My wife is, and always has been a Ripperphile, and I am a new convert. Despite us both having quite a vast knowledge on the subject our hosts definitely knew more, and even we learned a few new things. As well as some side history about the Whitechapel area. So, despite our exhaustion, we wandered the back alleys of Whitechapel for a good two hours and had a great time. It was highly entertaining and well worth the cheap price. I spent four days in London this week and this may have been my favorite part. The tour guide (Jeremy) was not only adorably hilarious, but also incredibly knowledgeable about not just Jack the Ripper but also London in the 1880's. It was just under two hours and I was intrigued the entire time. We were the last group to leave, so our group was a little smaller (about 15 or so people) which was perfect. After some research, I found out that the Jack the Ripper Tour have been receiving a lot of praise, so I wanted to give it a shot. And seriously, I wasn't disappointed.
