Rewind. Back to 1999. I saw a LOFT sweater in a magazine and had to have it. It was ribbed, maybe…read moremock turtlenecked, and black. It was not stretchy ribbed, but somehow knitted to appear so. It was eighty dollars. Who cares about the rent? I pshawed my boyfriend's feeble protests, and off we went to Trenton. The sweater always smelled of lingering, dry perfume. It made me feel decadent. When I became a mom, I donated the sweater to a Goodwill. My new husband- the pshawee- probably grinned. A new chapter began.
This past December (2019), I once again pshawed my husband. I had been eyeing the LOFT store for about a year. I decided to go in with my older daughter. She has watched me obsessively collect used LOFT tops for about two years- I have the leopard ones, the vintage floral one, the quirky floral one, the succulent one, the embroidered floral one, the "Little House on the Prairie" floral, the cactus one that my husband said looked funny. The bee one dovetails right in there. A few months ago, my daughter not only wore my LOFT fox and owl sweaters, but she independently sought after reasonable items from LOFT online. We let her get the items, because she has never done that before. I gifted her a star sweatshirt from LOFT, which she adores.
So, we went in. The door is huge, heavy, and artsy. You sorta want to admire it, but the smell of new clothes propels you inside. It is like a museum. The clothes are perfectly folded and arranged on tables, or hung gracefully from wall racks. All tees are to a T. Dresses invite admiration. Colorful bottoms beg to be seen. It is oddly quiet in there. People speak in hushed tones so as not to disturb the sanctity in there.
The clearance stuff is easy to find. They even have petite racks, which are clearly marked. There was a little nook off of the clearance area, which I think is clever. You have to pass the clearance items to get to it, and I could see a rainbow marled cable knit sweater that I am still loving as an image only.
We admired a pine green coat that was too big for either of us, and I saw stuff there that was not online yet. My daughter fell in love with a brown sweater that was enhanced with metallic thread. It was not in her size, so we ordered it for her as a surprise. She has worn it almost everyday for a week and a half now. (I do sniff-check it.) I almost bought a pair of chartreuse pants, but chickened out.
LOFT's prices are great. They have amazing sales. If you see something amazing, you can wait, cause it will eventually go on sale. Some stuff goes on sale really quick. Percents off vary. LOFT bloggers always champion the sales and what they scored at a LOFT sale.
LOFT has something for everyone. Their florals are outstanding. Two tees I own were inspired by vintage patterns created by Celia Birtwell. (At least I think so.) Their paisleys range in all sizes. Graphics are simple and cute. Reindeer and penguins are included in the menagerie. They have preppy and disco-y sweaters. Pants and jeans have just enough pizazz if you like showing off from time to time.
LOFT's clothes are extremely comfortable. My daughter never complains about itchy embroidery or scratchy knits. LOFT lets me be a size ___ in pants, which is a size down for me. I do not have to wear a belt. Cropped pants- not petite- in regular fit me perfect at 28". Sometimes I see a sale color that calls to me, so I just go with regular cropped. And, LOFT offers elbow tees, so you can hide chubby upper arms or tattoos.
One thing that I am not sure if it is a thing or not- the navy tees might fade fast. However, the tee that I am referencing was washed badly at a relative's house. I asked the washer's owner how many garments I could put in her washer, and just got a general affirmative. Later that summer, I threw out two white LOFT tees that had been washed at her house. Some clothes were still dirty, even after being washed in Persil. Some items looked beat up. It is possible that HE washers can only handle small loads, or that they are not so great after all. I wash on gentle and air dry all of our female tees. Anyway, just check out how darker LOFT tees handle life before committing to the dark side.
LOFT deserves those capital letters. My profile pic- that's a LOFT top. It has a zipper at the back with a ribbon pull. If you love special touches, you will love LOFT.
