He told me he could customize a tour that included mid-century modern residential buildings in addition to the regular walking tour of downtown skyscrapers. The price was more than reasonable so we set the date. He picked us up at our hotel and provided an incredibly thorough tour of the city, telling us countless stories about Detroit and Grosse Pointe as we went. I was able to hop out of the car and take photos of my favorite buildings whenever I wanted. The only downside was the day had to end at some point. You will be hard pressed to find someone more knowledgeable and passionate about his city's history than John Paul. As we said goodbye I promised to repay the favor if he makes his way to Houston someday. What else can I say?!

Completed in 1894, it was designed by Mason & Rice of Detroit, in the Renaissance style. The elegant exterior features terra cotta ornament and bronze gates and lanterns. The interior boasts mahogany paneling, ornate woodwork and imported marble. Guided tours of the Brand Center feature turn-of-the-century Italian architecture, formal whisky information session and tasting, film of whisky making process, and a visit to our Canadian art gallery with original works from the Group of Seven. Your one-hour tour concludes with a sit down sampling by your tour guide. (and who doesn't LOVE a free tasting of alcohol!) Our tour was led by a very fun gal who is a student at the local University. This was a first time tour where you could touch artifacts, sit on the furniture and truly feel the history. All in all it was a bit lengthy and some tongue in cheek humor especially when she showed us a "supposed" bullet hole shot by Al Capone back in the days of Prohibition. Still, a fun time and a nice way to spend part of a rainy day. The tasting was good...6 year, 10 year and 12 year samples were placed on tables as we concluded the tour of the building. More commonly referred to as Rye, we took in the nose of each, added a bit of water and sipped our way through all three. The best, in my non-whiskey drinking opinion, was the 12 year. It was by far the smoothest of all and didn't have such a strong aftertaste. Its a shame that the Walker family still doesn't have a part of this business....nice to hear the history and even nicer to taste the fruits of their labor.

Outstanding distillery tour! The tour experience which include a well made tasty welcome cocktail…read moreis followed by a fairly in depth walking tour through the distillery followed by a fairly wide open and long tasting of all the spirits made at this facility. The tour is quite educational and fun and starts with the history of building and the story of six childhood friends who decide to start a distillery as adults, almost upon a whim, during a get together. American dream is alive and well folks! As part of this tour you will see the full process From the mash bill, to fermentation, through the distillation process, barrel storing/aging and finally end up in the bottling station. A full in depth explanation of how to make Bourbon from start to finish is given during this tour that I found truly fascinating and quite educational where I was quite impressed how they accomplish all this in a fairly small footprint. Tour aside, Detroit distillery makes some seriously good Bourbon, Vodka and Gin. They currently have 1500 barrels in Storage with an ever increasing distribution which speaks volumes on how well this small distillery is being received by the public and the quality of their liquor products. Overall if you are into Bourbon and have ever wanted to learn first hand how it is made and having the fun of a tasting integrated into the experience, THIS IS A CAN'T MISS tour you should actually do. And at roughly a $20 cost this is a great value on top of everything else. Five stars in my book all day long!
