Stopped in here the other day. The other time I've been in here was just before Covid shut down. The beauty of this shop has always stood out to me. I love the wooden draws towards the back so much! It gives the shop a lot of charm. Service here is always wonderful---always very positive interactions. I love the range of prices here. I expected everything to be super expensive since it's a boutique in Providence but they have a nice range, plus sales and clearance and marked down sample sale items! My friends and family all know that if they like something I am wearing and ask where it is from, it is definitely from J Marcel! I come here no matter what vibe I'm looking for! I have bought dresses for a gala and weddings. I get my daily clothes for work and going out here, and a lot of my lounge clothes too. They have great sales! As part of a cooperative in Fox Point, I think we should support the array of small businesses in PVD. While J Marcel is not my personal aesthetic, it's great for gifts and conveniently located across the street from where my prescriptions are filled. That said, after returning to the store on numerous occasions, the customer experience to varies from condescending to micro-managed, even surveilled. Despite the service, the revolving selection of retail feels like a tired neglected swap meet. While it's easier than ever to shop online or get the same poor service at the mall, I hope this review will be constructive in producing a more welcoming and just environment for non-EastSiders and boutique-goers alike. read more

I am a huge fan of this store and make a point of stopping in anytime I am on Hope Street during their business hours. Though the store really is a cute little boutique, the prices are very reasonable. I recently purchased a number of pashminas for $10 and later saw that these dropped to a mere $6 during their storewide 40 percent off sale earlier in January. Great deal! I've also picked up some of their more reasonably priced sterling silver jewelry. There's a nice clearance area in the back of sample items but I've never been able to find much here I like. The sales people have always been very nice. Sign up for their loyalty program for information about sales and to earn points towards coupons. When I first became familiar with this area, I initially passed over this store thinking it was going to be snobby and expensive. Thankfully, I've discovered it is neither of those things! While I've been into J Marcel on numerous occasions, I have to admit I've never actually purchased anything here. The selection is massive, eclectic and every-changing, but nothing has actually ever really appealed to me enough to purchase it. They carry tons of shoes, handbags, jewelry and other accessories that run the gamut from demure to sexy to funky and quirky, and everything is at a discount price. They also have a room in the back full of item on super-sale, for those looking for a real bargain. The location is great; Hope Street across from CVS and a few doors down from Seven Stars and the bank makes this spot ideal for shoppers. This place can be lethal, so if you're just browsing, leave your wallet in the car. I'm talking about rows upon rows of discounted midrange name brand shoes. Yesterday was my third time in the store and I saw everything from Nine West to Franco Sarto, Tommy Hilfiger to Miss Sixty. I walked out with the most beautiful pair of ruched black sued, spike-healed booties, size 10, for $35. And I had to walk away from about three other pairs because I wasn't supposed to be shopping. They do a wonderful job at curating fun contemporary, borderline costume jewelry, which is all priced a point where you can buy one for your friend's birthday and one for yourself too. The back room is full of deeper discounts and I saw everything from sunglasses to winter earflap hats made in Nepal, and of course shoes. You are limited to what's on display in your size, but don't you just love the thrill of the hunt? read more

Yay! Finally another shoe store on the East Side! I love J. Marcel Shoes! It just opened up... Sorry I don't have the exact address, but it's on Hope Street right next to Studio Hop. They has discount shoes!!! What more do you need to know? It works like the old shoe department in Marshalls (look at your specific size and see what she has that's discounted...) Also, there's a designer shoe section in the back. The prices were great and the woman who worked there was very friendly. Not too pushy and very easy to talk to! I have big feet. It's one of those things that I'm pretty self conscious about and I have found that I am pretty much limited to shoe shopping at DSW for shoes. It's a sad sad experience to walk into a shoe store and find that they don't even carry my size. So, I have never thought of trying a place like this, until now. At the Hope Street Holiday stroll, I decided to give each and every store a try. During my first visit on this night, J Marcel totally wowed me. Of course, my first question was whether they would have my size. Oh hey, is that a whole rack of my size? Nice! Next, will they have anything I like? Ooooh, what are those black boots all about? Oh, but they're probably going to be ridiculously expensive. What? Only $50? Sold! This was probably the fastest shoe shopping trip ever. But before I left, I had to check out what other surprises this store had for me. And I was pleasantly surprised by their reasonably priced jewelry and purses. I ended up buying a few pieces for me and other people for Christmas and returned a week later for a little more retail therapy. One head's up. They don't have electronic check out so if you're going to use a credit card it takes a little bit of time to check out, but this definitely does not deter me for my new local find. read more

This is one of those rare finds you hope for in a little shoes-n-more store tucked away on the East side. My wife is ADDICTED to this place. Lately I've also been seeing a lot of other fun stuff finding its way in here besides shoes...scarves, cool tote bags, and some very hip jewelry & knick knacks. I was so disappointed when Blue Suede in Warren closed. I finally got a chance to check out J. Marcel, their sister store and was happy to see the same eclectic mix of merchandise. I have hard to fit feet, so while I look longingly at the shoes, I've never actually bought any. The jewelry prices are reasonable and I always get compliments on items I buy here. On a recent trip I bought earrings, a necklace and a bracelet for around $50. Not too shabby. If you see a piece of jewelry you like, buy it! Chances are it won't be there when you go back. I've learned that the hard way. There is a nice scarf selection as well. Like them on Facebook to learn about sales and other promotions. I agree 100% J. Marcel has GREAT shoes, SUPER styles, and FRIENDLY sales people. I'll be there this week to get my Fall shoes and Winter boots! They are WORTH the ride from Boston for the values. DIRECTIONS: Take 95 S, Main Street Exit, and then on Main Street turn left onto Rochambeau. I've passed J Marcel shoes many times in the six years that it has been here on Hope Street, but never ventured in until today. I was greeted immediately by a friendly employee and while I browsed the perfumes, she offered me useful pieces of information about the business and it's products. That is exactly the kind of conversation I'm looking to have in a retail store! They offer a wide variety of shoes (at deep discounts, but not used) as well as clothing, jewelry, accessories, and even scents for body and home. While I did not purchase anything, I can definitely see myself returning to J Marcel, especially if I'm looking for a new pair of heels for a big party and don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Just a heads up : returns ONLY for store credit - a policy I'm ethically at odds with (given I have a baby and really only have short windows of time to shop in, I don't generally have time to try everything on). To be fair, they do have a sign that says this on the register. I just missed it when I was checking out. While the clerk who handled the return was friendly enough, the woman who was working the counter when I bought the shirt barely said hello or stopped conversation with her friends long enough to ring me up. One last bit - it took the clerk inordinately long to refund my purchase. All in all, it's got decent price points and some nice pieces, but I find it cold and unwelcoming. Especially in a boutique, I think that customer service is such a huge part of the experience. Otherwise, why not just go to the mall? Maybe I'm just homesick for the boutiques in Asheville, North Carolina. Some of the boutiques there give you the experience of feeling like you're playing dress-up with a friend! And while I don't expect that from every boutique or boutique clerk - Asheville works hard to hone their skills in the tourism/shopping scene- I was looking for a bit more of a "feel good" experience. read more

Yes, I am a shoe-aholic, but J Marcel is so much more than shoes. (HOLD ME BACK!) Every time I go in, it is hard to find something that I don't "need". They have quite a eclectic mix of brands and styles, from Converse to FRYE to Robert Clergerie (yes, I treated myself to a pair, originally $500, I paid less than $100 SCORE!) . Sometimes it is hard for me to focus on the shoes because of all the other eye candy... purses, jewelry, scarves, hats. Every way I turn, there is something new and sparkly! Right now I am loving their little "everyday" earrings, spring headbands and wristlets. But they also have a ton of hip, funky purses, chunky unique necklaces and a myriad of scarves, all very reasonably priced. They really do carry pieces that would appeal to a wide range of styles. Oh, and their inventory is ALWAYS changing. Each time I go in, there is even more stuff that I "need". They keep it fresh and interesting. Can't wait for the spring shoes! read more

No Dixie C you are mistaken. I did return my shoes and I DID leave my contact info. I did get a phone call to my house from a man from J. Marcel and we discussed the problem. He understood my situation and said that he could not speak for the owner and that he would have her call me back to further discuss the situation. After that first callback I never heard a response from the owner. So I feel that the problem was not solved. Please don't say I was not interested in solving this. I live in the neighboorhood and do not post negative things about local shops for no reason. I will be more than happy to walk up and leave my phone number again, but honestly at this point I am not interested in giving your store a cent. Every one rants about how great this place is, but if you happen to have large feet, size 10,11 then welcome to frump-dom. The absolute worst selection of ugly shoes in large sizes ever! Because they have no interesting shoes in sizes 10-11 they instead stock the shelves with boots and winter stuff in the middle of summer. Recently I went in there and they have a new sales person working who is rude with customers , and seems somewhat disinterested in her job. My daughter saw a necklace she wanted for 10 $ wanted to pay with her own money. We put her money on the counter counted it, she only had 5$ and I was going to pay the rest on my credit card until the unpleasant sales girl informed me that the store had a 10$ minimum policy on credit cards. I told her that shop keepers were not allowed to impose such minimum fees as it violates their contract with the credit card companies... at which point she became incredibly rude and mouthy. I stop in to J Marcel a couple times a year, and almost always leave with something. Interesting necklaces, inexpensive scarves in zippy colors, cute and comfortable shoes, even perfume. A necklace once caught my eye, but before I bought it I noticed a very small flaw. I pointed it out to the salesperson, and they got another one sent over from their other store within a couple days, and even gave me a small discount "for my patience" I was impressed, and my loyalty was assured.
