Speaking of that, The Dallas Morning News recently published that Woodrow is #1 in academic gains in Dallas. The school was redesigned three years ago into four college prep academies which offer AP and IB (International Baccalaureate). Woodrow and its feeder, J. L. Long Middle School, are the only two IB schools in Dallas. Transfers for those out of the attendance zone are available with applications starting in January. Unlike DISD magnets, Woodrow offers the full range of athletic and extracurricular activities. It is the quintessential American high school experience. The Lakewood area is a bit like a small town and many generations have attended the school resulting in many traditions and an extensive alumni network. My only gripe would be that the principal, going into his third year, is a little to strict on spirit and pep rallies. He does attend most sporting events, however. I can confidently say that we have parented in partnership with the school to raise smart, respectful, creative, athletic, well-balanced students. Then they hired a marketing director, and the school started appearing more and more in the paper - like a LOT. Service projects became popular and a mainstay, and it was clear there was a strategic plan executed that included some serious "play," which has paid off; all of these things, my nephew participated in. From a community member perspective, living in the Lakewood area was a good experience, and I was able to participate in their fund raisers (Trek For Tech, among others), even though I didn't have kids in the school. In October 2021, my black daughter was called the n-word by a white student. Simply because he…read morethought it would be funny and embarrassing to do so. My daughter acted immediately to inform the AP and share her witnesses. Once home she also informed her parents. However, I was never notified by the school. The next morning I arrived to talk to the AP who acknowledged his error in not informing us (however, this lack of communication continued as I had to consistently follow-up). The AP shared my daughters account of the situation was accurate. I stated given the hateful nature of intimidation and bullying, the child should be removed from my daughters classes as well as receive out of school suspension. Neither occurred. The overarching theme in the handling of this has been to dismiss and ignore. The messaging to my daughter and our family has been- its okay. As an adult female who has lived in several parts of the country I have NEVER had this experience- yet, while at HPMS, my 13 yr old daughter has. For the record, this behavior is UNACCEPTABLE. Given the lack of response and concern, this behavior will not only continue at HPMS but fester. It is apparent the safety of their students- both mentally and physically- is not a priority and I will be removing my daughter from the district.

The school feels like a freaking prison. The staff doesn't do their job well, the program sucks when it comes to performing arts, and most of all, students here are unrealistic. Always making me feel like an adult here and I'm a student. Last year I tried my hardest to address the teachers and Mr. Flourie about non-black students saying the N-Word. None of them did a single thing to actually prevent this problem. For example, I came to Mr. Flourie's office and addressed him about the boys who I have told constantly to stop saying the N-Word. He said he understood and he knows a lot of students come to him about this situation. I also told him if he could bring every student to the auditorium and tell them what the word means. And told him if he doesn't then I'll do it myself. Later on, he actually came into my biology class and told everyone not to say it. And that's all. You can't just come into a classroom and expect the students to stop saying it. As an African American it feels very offensive to hear it come out of any non-black person's mouth like it's a word we use as a joke. This is a school I'll be giving no stars to, I will not recommend you to go here. Most parents and students here share their problems with the staff but sometimes it's never solved. The security guards are the people who make the experience feel like a prison, especially the council for me. If they see you walk in the hallway, like two times, they'll say, "You've been walking in this hallway too much," usually it's the 10th grade sophomore who says things like that, always being exaggerated with students. Then the female security guard who wears braids is the one who always yells at children for the smallest reasons. She wants to find a problem with every little thing, if there was a student who's in a marching band and eating next to the hallway during lunch, she'll literally scream at them. This security guard is jealous of almost half of the students there at school. The sophomore council and the security guard are mainly the two people who make me feel like I'm in a prison. I have a lot of problems at this school and honestly I'm done with everyone... If you're planning on going to this school I sure do hope you have a better experience than me.
