This doesn't quite feel like it fits in with the rest of the Covered Market, but it is perhaps a…read moretraditional shop that has been modernised. It's a bit like the shops you get at train stations, except it seems to be independent, so hooray for it! You can buy newspapers and magazines here - the range isn't brilliant, but it has most things - and basic snacks and drinks. It's right by the entrance near Boots, so is great for popping in on your way past. It's quite hard to stop and browse because of being here, and because it's so open, so best to leap in and buy the essentials before heading off.
It is small and busy and so very useful. There are a few newsagents in the centre of Oxford and…read morethey all useful places to know about. This one sells all the normal stuff and milk - which is great for those of us who pass by on their way to work and need to replenish the fridge so that we can indulge in numerous coffee and tea beaks.
I agree - most useful for milk and other small daily essentials. I'm always in a rush when I pop in, so I've never had a chance to chat to the owners, but they've always seemed very friendly. There's almost always at least one other person in there, so I think they're pretty popular, but it can be a bit of a pain trying to squeeze past people if you're in a hurry. There's a great range of magazines and newspapers, and it always makes me feel like I'm abroad when I see foreign papers. Great for a sense of perspective if you're suffering from the Oxford Bubble syndrome.

Inside are the offices of Oxford University Press, which publishes academic books on every subject under the sun, academic journals, educational books, classic children's fiction and, of course, the world-famous Oxford English Dictionary. I really like their 'Very Short Introductions' series, which consists of, well, very short introductory books to Big Topics, ranging from the general (eg: 'Philosophy') to the more specific: (eg: 'Freud', 'Shakespeare'). They're interesting and great for blagging your way through intellectual cocktail or dinner conversations.

This, I was told yesterday, takes 2-3 weeks. How come? The boat journey is only 18 hours. And why doesn't OUP warn its customers that this is the policy? Or maybe even give them a choice?
