The lady who was working was unfriendly and acted put out if you ask a question or wanted to look at something in a case.

Cute little antique store with a lot to search through, and super nice owners. Worth the rummage!

We rolled into Le Claire, IA recently on a cross country road trip. We naturally stopped into the…read moreAmerican Archeology shop and then headed on foot down Cody Rd to visit the other antique shops in town to see what they had to offer. There were several in town on this main drag. Our research had indicated that Big River Antiques was the place to visit if you want to shop for a diverse selection of antiques. The shop is run by some semi-retired hippies that are some great long time pickers. They have a good eye and bring a good mix of antiques into the shop. Word has it that even Mike Wolfe pops in there to buy when he's in town; We found the shop packed to the brim - floor to ceiling with antique treasures of all types packed and stacked everywhere. The shelves in the main room were packed so tight that it made it challenging to pull something out from the back of the shelf without creating a collectible avalanche. The lower shelves are deep and dark and I should have brought my pickin' light so I could see all the way into the back of the dark deep shelves. There are plenty of old metal advertising signs available in the shop. Lots of of old stoneware, some art pottery, salt and pepper shakers, glassware, jewelry, old oil paintings, prints, frames, lamps, tins, primitives and everything in between. It was a fun shop with so much antique eye candy everywhere that it took lots of time and patience to see it all. The smell of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies was refreshing as we shopped and they were indeed delicious. We enjoyed our visit to this shop and Le Claire, IA and will explore it again if we make it back into town. Definitely stop into the Buffalo Bill Cody museum while you are in town which is nearby. it was an interesting museum filled with much history and antiques.

My never ending search for awesomeness has taken me around the world but I've found some of my…read morefavorite places where you least expect them. On a recent trip heading back from Chicago you to my ranch just south of Kansas City I took a road less traveled and noticed the old mower shop in my home town or Monmouth had closed but something caught me eye. Actually, a lot of things caught my eyes. What's this? An antique shop? We've all seen plenty of those but this appeared to be more. Unfortunately, the place was closed so I looked them up on Facebook as I saw they didn't open the next day until 10 and I had many miles to go so I didn't want to delay my departure so imagine my surprise when the owner emailed me back and offered to open early so I could check this place out. I've always been a guy who likes crusty industrial pieces but also appreciate many antique pieces and boy did this place deliver. They had it all and the owner is a kindred spirit as we both appreciated many of the same things. In no time my pile of "can't live without that" grew. This place was a goldmine but not just for folks looking for the things I was, their architectural salvage selection was incredible and I only wished I had my list of door and window sizes as this place is full of beautiful and functional pieces unlike the cheapo crap you can buy at the big box stores that cost you many times more. I ended up filling up my truck with items that not only were beautiful but also extremely affordable. Much better pricing than I've seen elsewhere to the point I didn't even try to negotiate but I suspect I could have but with a selection like that combined with their prices I damn near had to pinch myself for my good luck and having such a wonderful owner who herself is a true artist that has a passion to rescue and give a second life to pieces worth preserving. As Arnold says.... "I'll be back". The shop, selection, prices and most definitely the owner were kick ass in my book. Thank you CherIt Forward
