I brought my cat to Center Star because he had started urinating outside his litter box. The staff…read morerecommended neutering him, so we scheduled the procedure. My cat has FIV, so I asked several questions beforehand because I was concerned about infection risk. I was reassured that neutering a male cat is a very simple procedure. When my husband picked him up later that afternoon, there was blood in the bottom of the carrier. At first he thought it was part of the carrier design, but when he got home and took our cat out, there was blood everywhere and the bleeding would not stop. I immediately called Center Star and was told they were closing and that we needed to take him to the emergency vet. Because the emergency clinic did not open until 6:00 PM and it was only 5:00 PM, I called Helton Plaza Veterinary Clinic for advice. Even though they were closing, the staff member there stayed on the phone with me and helped guide us until we could get to the emergency vet. At the emergency clinic, we were told the bleeding occurred because the surgical site had not been properly tied off. They were able to get the bleeding under control. The next day we returned to Center Star to have my cat checked and to discuss reimbursement for the emergency visit. During that visit, the veterinarian we saw also stated the issue was due to it not being properly tied off. The manager told me this situation "never happens" and said he needed to speak with the veterinarian who performed the surgery before making a decision. From that point forward, communication became extremely frustrating. I was told I would receive a call the next day but did not. I had to call multiple times myself to try to get an answer. I was eventually told they would not reimburse the emergency visit. What has been most disappointing is the lack of communication and accountability. No one from Center Star called to check on my cat after the emergency visit. I had to initiate every follow-up conversation myself. I was also told the veterinarian would speak with me, but when I called back later that afternoon I was informed she had already left for the day. I understand that complications can happen in medicine, and I was initially very understanding about the situation. However, the way this was handled afterward -- the lack of follow-up, the lack of communication, and the refusal to take responsibility for the emergency care that resulted -- has been very disappointing. Pet owners deserve transparency, communication, and accountability when something goes wrong. Because of how this situation was handled, I am also considering filing a formal complaint with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners so the incident can be reviewed.

We have been going to this vet for several years with all of our fur babies. Now, after being sold,…read morewe will not be back! We took our dog there due to severe allergies. After waiting about 3 hours to be seen, they gave us meds. When the medicines did not work, we went back 2 weeks later. The doctor drew blood to be sent off to testing. It is now a month later with no response on the tests and no relief. We ended up having to go to another vet because our dog was suffering so much. After both (new vet and us) trying to call the past two weeks, we FINALLY got an answer. The employee said they would call us back with results. When we asked for all records to be emailed to us, she got rude and hung up on us. The records emailed were for our other dog, not the one with all the testing. It is pitiful that they are making these animals suffer. I personally think they only care about the money.

It was so thoughtful of her to keep me connected to them when I missed them so much. When my trip got unexpectedly extended by two weeks, Amanda was incredibly flexible and didn't raise the rate, simply updating my invoice until I returned. I really appreciated her understanding and fairness. The property where my pets stayed is spacious and perfect for animals to roam and play, and you can tell Amanda and her team genuinely care for the animals like their own. I'm so grateful to have found such a trustworthy and reliable place for my pets. If you're looking for someone to board your furry friends, I highly recommend Amanda--she knows exactly what she's doing and will treat your pets with the utmost love and attention. 10/10, would absolutely recommend!

update 07/27/21 - Jamie just delivered my sweet Dio! I could not be more pleased with the quality…read moreof both the urn and the name plate/placard! Paws give the best recommendations without having to even go to their location! It took me a while to look in the nice folder Jamie dropped off (which is a new addition since poor Jewel was cremated), but what a sweet touch! It contains the Rainbow's Bridge poem which is also on a 3-dimensional bookmark, the certificate of cremation, a sweet sympathy card (hand signed by all the employees), a comment card if you would like (of course) to provide comments, a business card, and your receipt. I don't know why (probably brain fog due to being sad over sweet Dio) I thought the charge would be $300.00 but it is only $185.00 - WOW! You get a lot for that. I don't know if they still offer "combination" (my words) cremations, which are less expensive and not my preference. I always do a "private" (individual) cremation which is your baby only. Their primate cremation for 6-15# fur babies is $150.00 and the beautiful urn is only $35.00! The engraved nameplate, blue velvet bag, pickup from the vet's office and drop off to your home are all complimentary! Thanks so much Paws. You have honored my sweet boy Dio in such a beautiful way and it is very much appreciated! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This is difficult to write because requiring the services of a company like Paws Memorial is never a fun time. However, these are *the* most compassionate people you'll meet! In 2010 when we had to say goodbye to Jewel, Paws were there! I still enjoy his (long story that Jewel is a boy) beautiful urn that so handsomely honors his life! I believe I had sweet Haley re-cremated by Paws because I wasn't comfortable with how it was previously done. (Don't quote me, it's been a while). For Jewel, I picked up the urn (it's actually a beautiful wooden box I selected) at Paws and it came in a beautiful velvet bag and there may have been a note in there, I don't recall. Still, just a lovely compassionate experience when one is obviously distressed. When we sadly and unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Dio last week, I opted out of the cremation service/s offered by my long time vet which is an organization out of Birmingham, for Paws. I mustered up the emotional energy to make the call to Paws when we got home and Lisa at Paws was so kind!!!!! I asked if I could text her pictures of Jewel's urn because I wanted the same or a similar urn for Dio and we texted photos back and forth (they now provide the engraved placard/nameplate, which is a nice and appreciate touch!) and she sent me a photo of the one she recommended. Happily, despite changing computer systems in the past decade plus and not having my record, they still carry this timeless urn! YAY! I also texted the urn's measurements and Dio's weight - this ensures you purchase the correct size urn (you probably know that). It took me a week+ to decide what I wanted to engrave on the placard/nameplate as I wanted Scripture and none really spoke to me. I finally put on my big girl britches and narrowed it down to two verbiage options which I emailed to Lisa this morning. She immediately responded with a text and her opinion regarding which option would look the best. (As you can tell, I really trust and appreciate their input and professional experience in their field) I mean, these people are on the ball!!! Now they also offer pickup and delivery services which I am opting for and appreciate the added convenience. Also of note is price-wise they are in light or maybe slightly less than others who provide the same services. I'm looking forward to having sweet Dio back home to raise a toast to his well-lived life! Thanks, Paws!
