A while back, I contacted Chipheads for a comparison quote on the replacement of a laptop keyboard and frame after a water spill fried a touchpad. The first place I had visited for a quote was a lovely one-man shop that quoted me $300 minimum for the repair - and that was with full awareness that I'd already purchased my own replacement parts and therefore all cost on his part was purely labor. He also communicated clearly that accessing the keyboard area required moving multiple parts he was not entirely familiar with and laughed that he would have to give me the $2000+ laptop he'd tried to sell me if the repair didn't go well. I left the establishment unconvinced of his capability to fix my also $2000+ design powerhouse that had not left my side since I got her. Enter Chipheads. I contacted via the general email address on the website, outlining the general situation and requesting a quote. Chipheads teammate Scott responded, and the quote he gave was comparable. I then emailed to confirm that I'd ordered the right parts before making the decision to put my laptop basically in the hospital right before I was going to be gone for a full two weeks, so I wouldn't be able to get her back even if the parts were wrong and repairs could not be done. Scott never responded to that email, and I had to leave for my out-of-town event. When I'm home, I rely on my laptop heavily, so dropping off when I'm not occupied with an event is not ideal. When another long event came up on my schedule, I contacted Chipheads again, this time creating a new email thread directing back to the general email address - the previous thread had directed to Scott's email address after we connected. I admit that I was hoping that I would connect with Jarret this time, and I did. He responded not only quickly but also giving me the option of a two-week repair period for less than $200. I'd be occupied with my event for exactly that amount of time anyway, so this was perfect. When I arrived the day before my event started, Jarret was with another guest. Both the impression that the first shop had given me about the delicate nature of my repair and my own experience in tinkering with laptops and electronics in general added to why I specifically waited to speak directly with Jarret given the impression of reliability he gave me in our correspondence. I dropped my laptop off with Jarret the day before my event started. Less than 48 hours later, he called to let me know that my laptop was ready for pickup. That was back in August. I specifically waited to ensure that the laptop was in perfect working order before leaving a review. It's now October. Safe to say, my laptop is in good health. Dropping one star for Scott dropping the ball on communication. Regardless, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Chipheads for your repair and upgrade needs.

Their consistency is unmatched when it comes to quality and customer service, my two favorite things. With my latest printing request, I decided to contact a local printer instead since it was a smaller job (but still, a very important job). And the nightmare began-- with the local shops my emails were going unanswered, quotes were being delivered weeks later, and when I was finally able to get a response from someone and my product printed, I was disappointed (to say the least) with the results. I even had the local shop re-print...but round two was still not up to my admittingly high standards. So, I did what I should have done in the first place, and I contacted Richfield Printing. Mike gladly accepted my job and patiently answered my extensive questions. The job was printed the next day, and I was provided a tracking number the day after that. Two days later, the package arrived. I must say-- I was a bit nervous after the stress and negative results I'd experienced with the local printers. I opened the box and was immediately pleased with the care that went into the packaging. My product was beautifully separated, wrapped, and protected. (A very nice surprise compared to the way the previous shop had rubber-banded and thrown the product into a paper bag.) Based on the presentation, I knew what came next had to be good...and it sure was. Upon immediate glance, everything looked great...in fact, too great. I was so used to disappointment, this all seemed too good to be true. So I went back to look at every single piece, searching for error, but I found nothing. Many times we find ourselves just hanging out in our slip, boat watching, grabbing a pizza from their pizza oven, enjoying a cocktail, and watching the beautiful sunset. We absolutely enjoy our summers here on the lake and feel very fortunate that we get to do that at Howard's. Cheers to many more years to come.

I was expecting to just drop off my information and pick it up when finished but the preparer wanted me to stay. It was a good thing I did. When he finished the medical deductions I questioned why they were so much higher than last year and found he had added Long Term Care Insurance premiums as a medical deduction. I had to show him where to enter it on the state return. Then he asked why I had two duplicate pension forms with different numbers on them. I told him they weren't duplicates but were forms from my two pensions, each showing a different income. I watched him laboriously type in the information for 11/2 hours until he told me his next appointment had been waiting, and I left. When I returned two days later to pick up my returns, I was told the charge was $235. I was shocked! I do not own property or a car and have no investments. In comparison, a friend who owns two properties and has numerous investments was charged $310 by an accountant. I will not be going back to H & R Block.

That tax year, I was lucky to find Greg Vath at H&R Block in Bloomington. He put me at ease, both with his knowledge and expertise, but also with his demeanor. Greg is a Senior Tax Advisor with seven years experience and one smart person. His other professional career is very interesting (check it out on their website!) and provides us with some great conversation. But what I really appreciate about Greg is his knowledge and his personality. He provides the human touch. So last year when he helped me with my taxes, he found that I had filed something incorrectly the prior year, and helped me fix it so that I would receive additional money back! It's true what they advertise in their commercials! That sealed my trust in Greg and H&R Block. I went back this year, and once again, Greg found a way for me to leverage my HSA so that it was a win/win for me by making a contribution for 2011 and allowing me a tax benefit. I can't say enough positive things about Greg and H&R Block. It's well worth the money to pay someone to do your taxes, even if you are know what you're doing, or think you know what you're doing like me. And right now H&R Block is running a deal where you can get your return placed on a debit card for free instead of paying to have it direct deposited in your account. So I decided to try it out this year to see if it's worth it. The only down side I have found with the debit card is you can get charged monthly for non-use, so be aware of that if you safe your debit/gift cards up.
