One of the best German meals I've had. Large delicious portions in a traditional bucolic setting. Plenty of parking and an English speaking staff. Nice dinner pancake selection. Popular spot with the locals. read more

The Brauerei zum Schiffchen is a real institution in the Düsseldorf food scene, with a long…read morehistory. It's located in the heart of the Altstadt (Old Town) and its decor reflects its glorious and long past. Over the years, it has become more and more touristic but it's also still a place loved by many locals. They serve a lot of local beers, in particular the bitter, dark Alt which is typical from this area. Their menu offers a lot of dishes from the regional German cuisine including the renowned Rheinischer Sauerbraten (roast beef), Mettfleish (raw pork) and a lot of various wurst (sausages). The service is fast and prices are fair. It can get quite packed so it's always good to book well in advance.
Our last meal in Düsseldorf was at Brauerei zum Schiffchen. They're located in the old part of…read moretown. We dropped in on a Monday (around 12:30pm). The weather was a bit dreary so everyone was sitting inside for once. Our server spoke perfect English but he was a bit rough around the edges. This was the only restaurant we went to where English was already on the menu. The menu consisted of starters & soups, house specialties, fish and dessert. There also was a seasonal sheet and a few daily specials including a business set menu (€15,50). - Alsterwasser (€3,20 for 0.30L) - light beer with lemonade. This was a mix of pilsner with a splash of lemonade. - Himmel & ähd (€12,50) - blutwurst (fried black pudding), mashed potatoes, fried onions and stewed apples. Not sure why but their fried onions don't come hot nor crispy. The blutwurst was interesting; lightly crisped and the filling was tasty. Mashed potatoes were buttery. - Metzgers leibgericht (€14,50) - three sausages (mettwurst, thüringer art bratwurst and krakauer) with sauerkraut and homemade mashed potatoes. Mettwurst was a thicker, meatier, minced pork sausage. Krakauer (similar to a a Polish kielbasa) was slightly salty but had a good bite. Bratwurst was our favourite of the bunch; easily the tastiest and most flavourful. Sauerkraut was hot and well balanced in acidity. Mashed potatoes were the same (wish they would let you choose other sides to try). An enjoyable last German meal (and for once, not too heavy). 3.5 stars.

The best thing about the restaurant was my waitress. I have been learning German for only three…read moresemesters and was a little shy about trying to talk to someone. She was so patient and helpful, even though I was undoubtedly slaughtering her native language. It really helped with my confidence. The second best thing was the food. I had their Schnitzel,, Wiener Art and it was my first time ever having Schnitzel. It was very delicious! The Bratkaroffeln and Gurkensalat paired nicely with the meat. I was sadly unable to try dessert due to my timing. Next time. Either way, I highly recommend this restaurant for quality food!
Let's do a quick recap:…read more 1. The waiter took our order, delivered the 3 beers and food, and could then never be bothered again. We ordered a second round 6-7 separate times, but it never came. I think he just didn't want to work. 2. Two of us had extremely long hairs in our food. When I showed the waiter, he shrugged and walked away. 3. The table to our left waited so long for their first ordered beer, they they eventually got up and left, and I am not sure their waiter ever noticed. 4. Getting a bill took 20 minutes, once we realized service had basically ended. 5. My stomach now feels awful. I am sure this place can serve a beer if you stand up near the front, but do not eat here.

The food is exquisite! Frau Uli is a fantastic chef and the meals are prepared and presented simple and perfectly. There is no pretense, it's wonderful steaks, beautiful tasty salads and potatoes to die for... All in good proportions and at a very fair price. Uli is a perfect host! Wonderful stories and friendly, he is an expert at putting his guests at ease. He knows his Rums and Scotches (and all liquors I'm sure), it's a real treat to have him select an after dinner digestif. Without Uli this would just be a fantastic place to eat but it's so much more! The restaurant is in a wonderful old German building, I'm assuming an old guest house. I could write a 1000 words and I still could not do it justice, go and enjoy!
