I had decent limits, nothing crazy. But when we actually talked through what would happen in a serious accident -- like if someone was badly injured and the claim went past my auto liability limits -- that's when it clicked. If the damages go over your policy, that difference doesn't just disappear... it comes back on you personally. That's where the umbrella policy came in. They explained it as an extra layer that sits on top of my auto and renters. So, once those limits are used up, the umbrella kicks in and gives another $1M (or more) of protection. And it was way more affordable than I assumed it would be. It just made sense. I'm working hard to build savings and assets -- the last thing I'd want is one bad accident putting that at risk.
