Meet the Business Owner: David D.
There are few professions that require its practitioners to be so thoroughly vulnerable as writing. The writer is in constant fear -- of revealing one's feelings, of being exposed as a fraud, of being laughed at or criticized by one's friends, family, co-workers -- the mail carrier.
Writing for me has been an exercise in self-discovery, because much of mine is autobiographical, even if it isn't apparent at the time. I also try to contribute something of value -- some truth -- that all of us can use to make some sense of this world.
My fiction has informed my professional writing, and vice versa. Fiction has lifted some mental constraint -- freed me -- to use the language more deftly in service to institutional goals, and my professional writing -- the press releases, appeal letters, features, speeches, marketing and web copy -- has imposed a journalistic rigor on my prose.
What does this all mean for you? I'll put my heart into your cover letter or resume.
