Like a slice of Heaven in a gritty part of Portland, Ivan Dollar has soaring ceilings, exposed brick, and lots of white in its decor. It's on the second floor of the building and accessible either by elevator when you enter through the rear door, or you can take the twenty or so stairs at the front, which feels like a spiritual trek to me for some reason, like I'm ascending to the Temple of Hair. Jasmine is my stylist and I've followed her to several spots around town since I found her at a downtown salon in 2000. I have an epic mane (I think of it as my pet.) and Jasmine is an artist, so we're a good fit. Free (limited) parking! Highly recommended. read more

Molly Scrutton at this salon is a rare gem. Try to get her if you can (but she gets booked up fast! Schedule ahead!). The care she takes with cuts is amazing. Her color service is beautiful. Even her shampoo is a massage and you feel like you're st a spa. She does free bang trims too. Plus she's hilarious and remembers your whole life story. This guy is just awesome. He has been doing hair for a very long time, and knows what he is doing. I have hair trust issues, and well? I don't worry in the least, when I'm in this salon. I KNOW I am going to come out, looking fabulous. He also places a lot of care and faith in the other stylists who work there. From what I have seen, they are all really great. The atmosphere is also just beautiful. There is always a grand display of fresh flowers, as well as creative decor that changes periodically. Lisa has been my stylist for a long time now and where she goes I follow. My cut and color (highlights) are perfection. No chunky color, only natural looking highlights just the way I like it. I love pampering myself and getting blowouts as much as possible. As far as I'm concerned they're completely worth the money as my hair stays looking great for up to 5 days. Wherever Molly styles I follow, and I have been most pleased with Ivan Dollar. The space is beautiful, easy to get to, and it offers several designated parking spaces for customers which is a plus. A variety of beverages are available upon your welcome which is a nice touch too. I have had Molly cut and color my hair for 10 years now, and have enjoyed the many styles and shades she has come up with for my hair. It is unusual to have someone really listen. I followed Andrea to this salon, so this review is for her more than the salon itself. But the fact that this salon can attract talent like Andrea says a lot! Andrea is the best stylist I have ever had. I have incredibly difficult, thick (and I mean thick) curly hair that has been described as everything from a rainforest to Bobo the clown. But ever since I've been going to Andrea (for the last year and a half or so) my hair had been transformed into a luscious mane of flowing locks. She is a certified curly hair expert, but in my experience that doesn't mean much since I've been to several "curly hair specialists" without much success. But Andrea is the real deal, and her results are the proof in the pudding. One thing that she refuses to do is thin it out, even with my consistent requests, which is something that every other stylist I have had has done to my hair. Well, she obviously knows best because the results are spectacular, much better than anyone who thinned my hair. She cuts it in a way that it doesn't have to be thinned... It's like magic! My 60+ yr old hair is changing and becoming a challenge in its texture and loss of volume. I decided to try Ivan Dollar for a new styling and was delighted with the final style which played on the strengths of my natural hair and minimized the new challenges I faced. Ivan's space is beautiful and clean, the staff very welcoming and parking was easy. Ivan washed, conditioned my hair and then cut it to the agreed upon length. He followed the line of my own natural wave patterns and gave me a relatively short style that I can still pull back and put into a French twist. I really appreciate the versatility. Ivan also gave me some tips on good hair maintenance. I've not had such a truly custom cut before and it was sheer luxury. I waited 2 months to get an appointment here and what a disappointment this place was! It's in a low rent area of town with only two parking places allotted in the lot and the owner parks his truck in one of those so you are left to find street parking in a highly ticketed area.The shop is very uncomfortable with very cheap grooming chairs that don't even have arm rests! And even worse are the horrible chairs at the sinks- they don't line up with the sink so your neck is broken by the time your hair is rinsed! But the worse thing of all was what happened to my hair- the stylist must really be in to fashion because I ended up with multicolored stripes, some ombré and a section that looked color blocked. Not at all what I asked for or would ever want! It's a disgusting mess! The stylist was 20 minutes late starting me and seemed to rush the whole time and be lost as to what she was doing. I wont be going back and would never recommend this salon to anyone. Someone needs to tell Ivan playing French music does not add class to his cheap salon and the prices are way too high for such bad service in such an uncomfortable place! read more

A few years ago I admired a woman's hair one time and asked her where she had it cut. She told me about Ivan Dollar. He used to be at Scarlett Salon downtown near the public library. It was a fun, swank place to go and I immediately liked Ivan. And best of all, he was a great hairdresser. In fact, the song that often comes to mind when I am going to and from Ivan's is "He does something for me, that nobody else can do..." He has decided to branch out on his own and has found a fabulous beautifully restored historic building above Schoolhouse Electric on 330 SE MLK JR BLVD for his salon. I have always had difficult ,unmanageable hair and I have hopped from one hairdresser to the next for most of my life in search of a solution. Ivan took the time to listen, observed the situation over time, and gently showed me ways to behave and think differently about my hair. I am happier than I have ever been with my hair. I just wish I was working more so I could go more often to see Ivan. My mother also goes to Ivan and he has given her one fabulous short hair cut after the next. He also does men's hair . I highly recommend him and am so glad he is now in my neighborhood. You will not be disappointed. read more
