This place seems to have turned around 100% since the new owner took over according to past reviews. The new owner Kang was incredibly affable and made conversation with us, plus they have loyalty cards so if you go 10 times, you get a free manicure. APPOINTMENTS ARE HIGHLY SUGGESTED. Because they are so detail-oriented and have 1:1 customer service, you may wait over an hour if you're a walk-in, like the lady who was in the shop while my friend and I were getting our nails done. Also, budget time to get your nails done. My friend and I were at the salon for 3.5 hours because there was only one employee (Y) doing our nails. She did my pedi and both me and my friends' manis. This wasn't a problem and the vibe of the salon is super quiet and nice, and we didn't have anything else to do. But I can see this being a problem to somebody who has other things to do. This was the best manicure I've ever had. Y did an amazing job and truly cared about giving me what I asked for. Kang also gave me a really nice foot and calf massage that was included. Plus, the pricing was really not bad. $180 for a pedicure (with chrome), builder gel with 3D accents and French tip, this would all be $250 at another salon for worse quality. I felt like I got professional nail tech detail and quality for half the price. I will definitely be going back. read more

I peeked in the window today to see an empty salon and just as I was going back and forth on whether or not to go in the door opened and I was greeted by two smiling faces. The vibes were good so I decided to go in. Initially I was just going to get a gel pedicure but as soon as I sat down and one of the ladies helped me adjust the massage chair I decided to get a mani too. Jen did my pedicure and Y did my manicure. Both had very nice attention to detail and at some point between a flow state and sensory experience I think I fell asleep. It was very relaxing! Jen has very strong hands and I upgraded to an extra 10 minute massage. I would have paid for an hour if that was available! I asked Y for super short nails and she accommodated me with finesse. I particularly loved the scrub and the steaming hot towels they used. I chose a very subtle natural pink and it looks so pretty in the sun. Also, it should be noted that their massage chairs are excellent! I'm so happy to they came outside to help me decide to go in otherwise I might have missed a great experience. 10/10 will definitely be back! read more

New owners - this place has been open for three months. The place looks really nice and has over 2000 colors. I had a gel manicure - cat's eye - and a pedicure. They use an electric cuticle remover which is really gentle. Y - the technician - did a great job. I would go back and definitely recommend folks try this new place out. I would call as they only have two technicians there right now. read more

**I went in today it's NEW OWNERS as of two months ago so ignore previous reviews as it's new owner and all new staff** I rarely ever review places but I had to take the time to review Sunset Nails because wow... the service and the quality was amazing! You can tell the owner really really cares about the outcome and they take their time doing your nails. They use all organic oils, polish remover, etc. You won't feel rushed. You'll feel taken care of. According to other reviews, there was a change in ownership in the last 6 months and while I didn't visit before, you can absolutely tell they are doing it right and well now!! As of July, the acrylic set (w gel) was $60 and that's the best deal I've seen in a while (many places around here are charging $150+ for a set). I added $30 for a tip because I was so stunned at the price; I thought it was going to be $100+ just for the set. I honestly feel like they are worth more because of the quality of the nails and the time they take! For those wanting to go, I do recommend calling ahead / making an appointment. There were a couple people who came in as walk ins and were not able to be accommodated due to appointments. read more

I just had both a gel manicure and gel pedicure for the first time since change of ownership at this salon. The young lady named "Y" did an amazing job! She was patient, friendly and meticulous. I highly recommend this salon! read more

Once again, amazing service and vibes!! The red set of nails is the newest look and they look beautiful for the holidays. There was a power outage while working on my nails, but the nail technicians quickly adapted to the situation and got the job done! Special shoutout to Nancy for working on all three sets and checking in to see how I'm doing throughout the process. read more

It's been 2 days and the nails are peeling off. They were really overpriced for a simple design with no extensions ($85), and cost twice as much as quoted. My cuticles on the other hand started bleeding because she was ripping them out too fast, but I was honestly fine with that. The price is just not justified given the service, and the nails are not lasting. read more

I don't write reviews often but I did not enjoy my experience here. I made appointment for hard gel over the phone for 5 pm and came in and it seemed not super clean. Wasn't anyone else there, and nail tech had me sit down. I asked for hard gel or builder gel for a little extention but I wanted to do forms and she expressed how annoyed she was, there was zero prep or cleaning, she rushed the hard gel so there's some weird angles and looks pretty thick and clumpy on some parts. Also no dust collector and not her fault but there was a lot of dust with the e file and she had her mask while I did not and the hard gel dust was in my face and I was a little uncomfortable trying not to breathe it in. I wasn't aware of the price before but she said the price will be $20 more with the forms (which I'm ok with cause I know it's more technique) and $20 for French tip (which I decided not to do). So the hard gel with natural pink no design was $85 and while I didn't really enjoy my experience, I still tipped $10. Maybe the other people who have gone enjoyed their experience but overall I don't think it was worth the price or service and I will find another place. read more

I had a disappointing experience at this salon. I walked in and asked if they could do a gel manicure, and the nail tech said it would work. However, the entire service felt extremely rushed. She finished my gel manicure in about 10 minutes because she had another client waiting for an appointment. I was not told in advance that the service would be rushed or that she didn't have enough time. A gel manicure done properly should not be completed in 10 minutes. Unfortunately, my gel polish started peeling within a week, which is unacceptable for a gel service. If there wasn't enough time to do the service properly, it would have been better to let me know rather than rushing through it. read more

There's so many places in sf to get your nails done. Quick appt made, but parking is horrendous in this neighborhood. Rushed to make a decision but happy with the longevity of this dipped hot gel mani. Rough service and borderline rude customer service. I had seen sunset nails a couple times walking on Irving and I decided to call them today to get my nails done before going out. They said they could take me in so I walked over and was there in 5 mins. Nancy did my manicure. I don't write a ton of reviews but Nancy made me feel so taken care of, I couldn't not. I loved her attention to detail and was super impressed with the final results. She even showed me some of her other nail work she had been working on and I'm excited to go back for a pedicure next week. omggg I almost forgot but what really took the cake for me was I had chipped one of my fingernails yesterday and was sad bc I figured she'd have to cut them all small to make them even but she ended up putting an acrylic nail over it and shaped it perfectly to look like my natural nail! I also jus thought she was very sweet c: + at the end she had me take a photo of the nail colors number she used on my nails in case I don't like them or they get ruined or anything else wrong so I could come back and get them redone with the same nail colors. read more

Has take me a while to update the review. The establishment has been renovated and is equipped with massage pedi chairs for over a year now. They offer various services and price ranges. Plus all services are done in a timely manner. They are very efficient, and folks are happy waiting around knowing it will be their turn soon. Street parking right in front of the salon may be a bit challenging depending on the time of day, but there will be parking available in surrounding areas. It's ok to take a car. It is cash only. But if one forgets, there is an ATM inside the salon. Sunset Nails SF also offers more intricate nail designs than simple mani/pedis. Beauty yourself Enjoy read more

I found this salon through Yelp and wanted to try it based off of their solid reviews. I came in for a gel French manicure (gel because I wanted it to dry quicker for time efficiency). I walked in a few minutes after they opened and was seated immediately. It's a small little salon with 3 manicure tables and 4-5 spa chairs for pedicures. It was $50 and they prefer payment and tip in cash. I didn't catch the name of the technician who did my nails, but she got the job done. I wanted something simple for a wedding and she delivered. She filed my natural nails into an almond shape and we did a layer of natural polish before adding the white tips. I came in with pretty long natural nails, but after filing, they became a little short and stumpy.. Upon closer inspection, the sides of the nails don't really have enough polish and the cuticles didn't receive too much TLC, but from far away it gets the job done. read more

The dedication to customer service has changed my mind regarding Sunset Nail's attitude towards customers! The business manager on Yelp (Elle) reached out to me privately and apologized for the past visit's grievances. She offered a free visit in salon to touch up the last manicure, and a free pedicure! At the salon, I got the misshapen edges from the last visit smoothed over and repainted. Overall, great customer service. Since I didn't get charged anything, I just paid cash tip (there's a sign that says they prefer their tips in cash, for anyone who's reading who never usually carries cash with them!) read more

First time I went the staff was super nice, great selection of colors, but my gel manicure was not so great. Uneven nails and clumpy polish and after 1.5 hours I was running late and had to go. I expressed my concerns and they gave me a gift certificate for a re-do when I could return. While I wasn't pumped, nothing is perfect and I suspect I caught them on a bad day so I was super grateful. I just got my nails done again (gel) and got some cool hologram flecks and it only took 35 mins for a mani pedi which was wonderful, except my nails peeled, chipped, and discolored after 2 days with barely using my hands (no crafts etc!) I wish it worked for me as I'd love to be a regular but just not consistent enough to make it work. read more

2/5 1 gel x manicure: 70 1 gel manicure + regular pedicure: 80 Tip: 15 I would like to start off with acknowledging that I'm sure there are many out there who had a great experience with this place but my sister and I did not. If not for their cheap pricing for SF I would have bumped them down to 1 star. 1. They did not change gloves in between customers that was my first red flag. Sanitation of nail instruments were not done properly either and they did not change towels as often as needed. My sister had to share a towel they already used on another costumer as they did her nails. That is disgusting. 2. The lady drilled so hard and when I went home I was bleeding a little on my middle finger right hand. I posted a picture of my left hand on this review to show how thick they applied the gel. It was also uneven. I didn't post, but there are huge clumps of gel stuck underneath my nails, which shouldn't happen. My mom works as a nail tech and when I went home she had to fix their mistakes. I was hoping to get it done here so I didn't have to bother my mom before my sister's wedding. 3. The boss lady is insensitive and fat phobic. She called my sister béo which translate to fat in English. My sister is plus size but that gives them no right to shame her. 4. When I was trying to check up on my sister as they have placed the heater to close to her making her uncomfortable, the lady murmured that I was annoying. She then proceeded to curse me out saying in Vietnamese "khó chịu" and "con ranh năng này" which is a rough translation of picky ass bitch. They only said sorry once they found out I understood them. Again my mom works in this industry, I know this is not normal behaviors if the salon were ran by a professional person and not a gossip lady. If you do go ask for the lady who speaks tiếng Nam, she was the sweetest to my sister and did not talk mad shit about me either. read more

i walked out paying $85 for a polk a dot design for builder gel. that would be fine however none of my nails are the same length or shape. my nails only were aggressively filed after the polish was put on which damaged the polish. not to mention the polish doesn't even go to my nail beds. and since when do we "cut" nails with the electric nail file! so if you walk in good luck they will do the most rush job possible to get you out just in time for their appointment. read more

Gave them multiple chances. Very suprised at all the 5 star reviews. The gel manicure doesn't last (lifts and gets dull) one woman working there is particularly rude and told me "move" literally. Just "move" no please, no excuse me. While she was trying to get behind me. I really couldnt move anywhere as my hands were being painted and there's no where to go! And the stand where you pay was literally behind me. But that's not my problem. At least say "please." That was it for me. Very rude, not service oriented, no basic courtesy or manners. You can't chuck everything off to a language barrier, when it comes time to pay, there's no problems in communicating. Very cramped space, no massage or frills at all, price fair I suppose at $45, but any other place in the city will do the same, if not a better job, with better ambiance. I don't like rude people, especially if you're in the service industry expecting a 20%tip. Needless to say, after 4 chances, I'll never come back. read more

I paid $65 for simple acrylic pink nails of a short length. I definitely feel I should have gone somewhere else if I paid that price, but I thought I could trust this place given the high reviews and images of their work Judging by their Yelp images, I do think they are capable of doing good work, but they won't do it unless you ask them nor will they check for quality. I felt they were more focused on getting the work done quickly rather than the quality of the work. They did have another customer booked at almost the same time slot as me, so that might be why, but I wish they took greater care with my hands. I am not very familiar with acrylic nails as this was my first time getting it done and was sleep deprived, but even I could tell they did not try to do a great job. One of my acrylics was upward sloping, and they said it was because of the shape of my nails, but my nail bed does not curve upward naturally. 4 of my nails were not rounded properly. Some nails were also filed asymmetrically, and didn't always match the length of the corresponding nails. They didn't remove my hangnails until I asked, and I realized after I left they didn't even bother cleaning my cuticles. They also didn't clean the underside of my nails. Additionally some of my acrylic nails were very bulb looking which doesn't look very good from the side. I will say, whatever I caught and pointed out, they did fix without issue even if it took a fair amount of time and didn't harass me about it, but they would never point it out themselves or even check. But I feel if I am paying $65 for acrylic nails with no design, I should not have to go through all this trouble. I am not an expert at this so I couldn't catch all their mistakes. But if this is their profession, they should take on that responsibility, not me. Fortunately, the result won't look too bad in pictures as long there are no close ups at certain angles, but I am disappointed nonetheless and wish I had more carefully researched other nail salons in the area as there are many in that price range for acrylics. I think if you know what you're looking for with your acrylics and have a good idea of what's a good job and what's not, you can get them to do a good job. They are nice enough people and do listen to you if you have complaints about their work. But I wouldn't recommend them for any important events or if you aren't willing to observe their work carefully when it comes to acrylics. read more
