What a neat souvenir shop! They have hundreds of shirts and hats and magnets and car decals and any Port Aransas merch you could need! You can get a cap and a shirt for $20, or 4 t-shirts for $20, or 2 custom t-shirts for $20, and all kinds of deals. The coolest thing about this shop is that you can pick your own design for a shirt! The ladies were friendly and helped us figure out what was going on, pick out a shirt, and then they put the design on it in no time. There's so much variety in designs, from kids to trendy designs to standard designs. Really cool place. Check it out on your way out of Port A! read more

We stopped by to check out the souvenirs here. There's so much variety of products here from sand castle making kits to sea shells to all sorts of t-shirts to jewelry. I found a cute pirate onesie for my great nephew. Right outside the entrance were the Macau birds for photos for a fee. I saw a family getting their photos taken and one of them was cradling the Macau bird like a baby. It was so cute! read more

Wow! I've always recommended this place because several years ago they stayed open late for me. But today, I was met very differently. I walked in and all employees stared at me. One asked, "Were you in here a bit ago and changed your shirt?" I responded with no. I've been hold up in the rv because of the rain. I was laughing because I thought they were kidding. The Islanders gift shop capitalizes on abuse of animals. Their selling of hermit crabs to the public is a sad practice. Most people do not know how to care for these creatures and they end up dying in their small plastic containers sold by the Islander. Their photo opportunity is oppressive to intelligent parrots that are forced to perform in the heat and stressful conditions. I witnessed the handler being rough with one of the birds when it didn't want to cooperate. I would give no stars if possible. read more

With an entire island devoted to tourism, places like the Islander are in abundance, but out of all the souvenir stops, this is one that has always managed to snag my attention...and visa. (4-stars) *They have plenty of the squeaky-drive-mama-insane-on-the-ride-home toys...which surprise-surprise, my two boys love. All at somewhat reasonable prices! I cannot say I'd mind a bit if those squeaky toys happened to lose their squeak, oh--wishful thinking! *This place is also loaded with pre-inflated floats, boogie boards, skim boards, anything and everything you might want while enjoying a little fun in the sun. *The Islander happens to be fabulously notorious for offering photo opportunities whether it may be hanging with Polly the Macaw and fifty other birds perched outside for a few bills, or the giant lighthouse on the right-side with a concrete boat just in case you want to snap a few cute pictures of the nuggets. *And need I not forget the shaved ice stand--this place has been in business for awhile and offers up some tasteful refreshing snow cones. (3-stars) *They have a boat holding tons of hermit crabs (which are most assuredly going to die after you purchase them), which is kind of cool. Not to mention the giant shark mouth mounted on the wall, leaving something for the children to admire. (2-stars) *The customer service--less than friendly and less than happy to be working there, yes I understand they're dealing with a flood of customers daily, but it doesn't mean they should stop offering up some character aside from a snarl. *The t-shirt selection (screening portion) is not as vast as Destination, so if you're looking for a specific design browse the other stores first. This is probably the biggest souvenir shop in Port A and therefore also has the best selection. The "4 for $20" t-shirts offer many different styles & colors to choose from. The shirts are not made with thin material. My daughter had a t-shirt printed for $11. She found a pair of shorts with "Port A" printed on them. Islander has a good selection of beach clothing. While we were visiting Port A, the wind was blowing fairly hard. Islander has a good selection of cheap kites. We bought a $15 trick kite and a $4 basic kite. The wind never let-up, so we flew the $4 kite for about 15 minutes before the plastic stick in the wing started bending. It was fun while it lasted, so we salvaged what we could from the kite and came back to the Islander to buy another for the future. My daughter wanted some of the giant erasers she saw at a different store earlier that day. Of course, the Islander had them in stock. The islander also has hermit crabs if you think you can take care of one (we definitely can't, which I had to remind my daughter of multiple times...) Islander is worth the stop if you are looking for beach equipment, beach wear, and inexpensive souvenirs. read more

I purchased a coffee mug at the Islander while on vacation in Port A back in June 2022. Loved the cup but unfortunately dropped it and broke the handle. I contacted Pam at the Islander, and she located two more cups identical to the one I broke and shipped them to me. I was impressed by the quantity and quality of the products this store carried when we were there but now, I am even more impressed by the wonderful people working there and their customer service. read more

This store has been a regular stop of ours for many years. The place is clean, family-oriented, and well-stocked. My only complaint is that they don't do refunds but only exchanges, and for some reason, they don't post this policy. A somewhat gruff, rather large man (the owner?) explained, "it's on the receipt!" My complaint isn't the policy ITSELF, but that it should be POSTED. read more

We walked around in here after returning our beach buggy. They had a lot of t-shirts but they were all crammed together so tightly on the racks that I had no desire to attempt to separate them enough to look through them all. They had two ridiculously cute tie-dyed sun dresses that I would have loved to walk out with but instead of having real sizes... they were labeled "free size". I guess that's the hippie version of one-size-fits-nobody. Just didn't want to spend the high price for those dresses only to have to turn around and have them altered. read more

Ogle the hermit crab execution boat where you can let your child pick out the next one to die in a hot car on the way home. This store is full of a wide selection of touristy babbles, trinkets, jewelry, clothing, and all manner of beach things. They definately have a better selection and better quality stuff than their competitor across the street, so go get your photo op inside the shark's jaws and then head towards the tall wooden sailors to spend your mad money. We were convinced by a good sales person to buy a large easy up beach canopy from here for $130. The sales person told us they were the best prices and best quality on the island and with our 11 month old we wanted to make sure we had great cover on the beach. The first time we put it up (with help from a neighboring beach pro so we know we did everything correct) it snapped and broke. We understand the beaches are very windy and this happens but we drove the beach and noticed multiple canopies from academy that were half the price doing just fine with no weight or sand bags. We went the next day and told them what happened and they moved their credit card machine to reveal a statement that said "no refunds or exchanges on canopies or umbrellas".Basically don't waste your money here, go to Walmart or academy and spend less for better quality. Also it is sneaky to hide a disclaimer under a credit card machine from your costumers. read more

I bought two port aransas shirts for my older daughters, but it was impossible trying to find anything to fit my 6 yr old twins... everything was either way too big or way too small, even if it was their size! We went to PA for Sandfest 2012. While there I foolishly bought three Hermit Crabs as a gift for my six yr old grandson. He's all boy and fascinated with bugs, insects, etc. and I thought he would enjoy having these little guys. What they neglect to tell you when they sell them is that these guys require a complex habitat, specialized care and a strictly monitored environment. My fault (partially) for not researching them before buying. In my mind I expected to provide basic essentials and clean their place of residence when needed. No, no, no. They require strictly regulated temperatures, humidity, diet, De-chlorinated water for sterilizing everything that they eat, touch or breath, a real sea salt water mixture for bathing,a certain mixture of sand and substrate, an aquarium tank large enough to hold all of their "stuff", 3-5 extra shells for each crab (for changing into), two dishes for above mentioned waters, food dishes, (natural shells), climbing toys, hiding decor, heating, two lighting fixtures (one daytime, one night time) and preferably automatic timers or specialized equipment in order to keep you from losing your sanity while trying to keep their housing at the correct humidity and temperature as they need for their survival. By the way, NONE of this stuff is cheap. I have had animals all of my life. Horses, dogs, and everything in between. These little guys have a complex and demanding lifestyle. And it surprised me more than with any other creature that I have ever had. I guess I was a little shocked by all of their complexities. Right now, I feel pretty foolish about my ignorance. I don't normally get myself into such things. I thought that with all of my (almost 60) years on this earth I should be so seasoned and wise. Wrong again! Of course I have taken all responsibility for their care ,there is just no way a kid could care for them. Maybe an extremely responsible teenager, but, I'm not so sure about that... Well, it's my own doing and I will give them the best care I possibly can. I have to say that I am furious that these creatures are callously sold by these beach stores for a profit and are more than likely are dying by the hundreds from lack of proper care because the buyers aren't given the knowledge. There are probably many more that are being discarded and left to die. People who are buying them do not know how much care and expense is required for their upkeep and IMO are being totally duped by these sellers. The Humane Society or Animal Rights should push for a law that at least requires that the sellers have to publicly post a notice in large print of their care requirements for their survival before purchasing them. They do give you a sheet with some info once they have completed the sale. I read it on my way home..... My little guys are fortunate that I brought them home with me. I take the responsibility for getting them and we are in this together. I will give them what they need and must have, even though the expense has more than quadrupled over the amount of their original cost. They are pretty fascinating little guys and sometimes very comical. Pretty darn cute, for such an odd little creature. Yes, I have gotten attached to them in these few weeks. I've read that they can live up to 20-30 years with proper care and a little luck. Wish all of my dogs did....... To: The Islander, GET A CONSCIENCE AND TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS!!!! I typically visit port A more than a few times a year. I have to say that if you are looking for a good souvenir shop DO NOT COME HERE. My experience had to do with a sloppy extremely rude employee that works at this place. He is an overweight blonde guy that was very pushy and not very professional at all. He did not offer any assistance to my wife either when she was looking to purchase an item in their display case so the Islander basically lost out on additional sales. He was just trying to get us out of the store. ...but wait there's more! Not only was he rude but he also charged my card and then decided to card me AFTER he ran my card. He decided that my signature didn't look like the one on the back of the card. What a buffoon. I hope the Manager or owner reads this because if you are trying to do some type of fraud prevention you need to card someone before you run the card not afterwards. In addition to this, I also noticed when we got home that he did not charge us for an item as well. So this means he Lost a sale form the jewelry display case and he is carelessly giving away free items unknowingly to the public. I would return it but I live over 3 hours away.
