The scrimshaw is beautiful and both the Christmas ornaments and sleigh bells would be great additions to any collection. I found the owner friendly and informative. I believe he is a second generation leather craftsman. It is worth finding this shop, in fact there is much to view and while noted as a store it is also a gallery of a number of mediums.

A combination of old wood, dog, a recent fire and lots of leather. Perhaps an unusual and unexpected olfactory juxtaposition but a surprising pleasant one. Almost intoxicating. The sign outside has a picture of a leather punch on it and leaves no doubts or ambiguity about the main purpose of this store. Lots of leather items and tools scattered around and the people here deal with leather with confidence and skill. They can whip you up a belt, jacket or just about anything else in leather with ridiculous ease, skill and speed. Besides the leather goods the store also has a menagerie of other fascinating things. Exquisite glass pieces and unique and distinctive Xmas ornaments or beautiful lamps grace the ceiling and walls. Clocks, time pieces, strange dolls and even some scrimshaw add to the evocative and visual stimulation. A great place to visit on a cold Nantucket day. Nice warm fire, friendly and knowledge people and an even a happy dog to great you. A unique and anachronistic shop that will excite all of your senses and imagination. Places like this are unfortunately quickly becoming distant memories. A place to pet a friendly dog warm your butt by a fire or see some incredible crafts.

    Beach Glass of Nantucket

Since writing my review yesterday of the North Star glass gallery, I have not been able to stop…read morethinking of a quaint little gift shop that I have visited many times in Nantucket because the beautiful and colorful glass is what first drew me inside. Through the years I have collected many things, from antiques to sports memorabilia with Norman Rockwell in between, enough so that I could probably open my own shop. Call me a pack rat, if you will, but my fascination with glass catches every one's eyes. I once had a comment from a visitor coming along as a date with our male friend and he commented on my paperweight collection and she said, oh you can buy those at Target, Ha! I buy nothing unless it is signed or marked and if it has papers, all the better. It is here at the Beach Glass of Nantucket that I bought my one and only extra large "paperweight". It measures 11" wide by 10" tall and 4' deep and is the most gorgeous sunset scene! It weighs a ton and they would have shipped it for me to Pennsylvania, but I decided I would rather get it home myself. While we spent the day touring the island and having lunch, they went out of their way to package it safely. The artist is well known and it is Murano glass and from Oggetti, Italy. I paid $1,500.00 and the artist passed away shortly after, probably because he heard how much I paid for the piece, just kidding. I have it sitting in a downstairs window that catches a lot of light with my dozen and a half smaller paperweights surrounding it. Good glass paperweights are a real work of art to me because of the pain staking details they bring together to make gorgeous flowers and beautiful scenes. This shop does sell a lot of glass, some of it is cheap, so you do have to look. They have the coolest note cards decorated beautifully by local artists. They also have local artisans who hand craft jewelry and artists who paint beautiful scenes on glass goblets and flower vases. The shop is small but loaded with gems, you just have to take the time to look. Nantucket is like stepping back in time... Until you see the prices. Not wheelchair accessible.

Where this spot shines is the home goods - wooden duck decoys, brass candlesticks, baskets... if those old types of things are your jam, this is your spot. They also sell: old books, beach chairs, furniture, limited jewelry, coolers, kitchen items from silverware to coffee makers and everything in between. Overall, a Nantucket gem. PS: I turned my back at the register to try on some earrings and answer a question some ladies had about my dress and some tourist took a broach right out of my pile (it was very clear that it was taken). They were sneaky and not the vibe. Don't be that person.

It is full of good, donated product, and has the widest selection of DIFFERENT things that I've seen in a thrift shop. The bottom floor is basically an unfinished basement, with rooms dedicated to certain items, especially furniture. One room was selling used books, and it has as many books as some small libraries. They had local product as well, and my wife picked up a hardly used scarf. The hallways are very tight, allowing only two people to pass when going sideways, and the staircases are one person-at-a-time. No chance for wheelchairs or strollers. Because it is so hard to move around, it was appreciated that each floor had their own cashier. I didn't see any long lines to checkout, and there were volunteers everyone, keeping things running. The prices do seem very knowledgable...you are not going to find any crazy bargains because the 'purchasing' department didn't understand the worth of some products. It is located in a very touristy area, so bargaining attempts by non-residents must happen once in a while. There was a funny sign stating that bargaining was insisted, the pricer would agree to give the discount but first increase the price by the same amount. Hopefully, everybody gets the joke.
