No. This one of the best tasting food spots on the big island and yet I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Simply go to Costco and save your money. Our server spilled an entire pitcher of cream on the table... it soaked my boyfriend's phone and drenched his clothes. She never came to see how our food and we waited for her to finally visit the table so we could pay and get the heck out of there. Never offered anything to compensate the lousy service or the cream accident. Oh and we never got the strawberries on our waffles. Unreal. Terrible treatment of customers. We went there Sunday morning and the host said there was a 20 minutes wait. The host was nice. We waited then got a table. The couple came after us got served before us and no one come to sever us for another ten minutes. We just wasted about 35 minutes there then we left to another place. Horrible experience! I just left this place. Checked the menu it says that they offer Mediterranean Octopus at market price, asked how much is the octopus today and what is the origin of it. Got an answer from the server that today it is at $18 and most likely it is local. She took the order, 10 minutes later she informed me that the octopus is from Spain, I said that it's okay. 15 minutes later she brought a plate with burned octopus tentacle , on the side is was a potato salad. I tried the octopus, it was a burned canned octopus from Costco, tasted as rubber. These people are buying a canned fully cooked octopus at Costco, than grill it. Whoever run the kitchen has no clue what are cooking is. Oops, almost forgot about the cherry on the top: the potato salad that been served with the octopus was completely rotten. Shame on you guys! Firstly, this is mostly for tourists- view's great, good service. We've come here over many years on our trips to Kona. Thought I'd try the Macadamia Crusted fresh catch, which was mahi mahi. I asked the server what type of fish it was. She said it was "buttery and flaky". So, I ordered it. Not only was the fish not buttery and flaky, but the preparation was bad. The fish had semblance of being pan fried first, then probably coated with the topping and fried or baked. I was expecting a piece of fresh fish coated w/ crumb mixture and then cooked. It was very disappointing and not worth the $36 MP. My advice: stick to the pupus or go with typical items, like fish and chips and burgers. I did mention my concerns to the server who stated that the description she offered was how she was told to tell customers. She wasn't familiar with mahi mahi. I suggested she advise the house not to describe mahi mahi as "buttery". read more

We spent 6 days in Kona and ate here 4 times. It's a bit pricey, but no more so than any place would be in this area, and the food is actually worth it. I particularly loved the house salad (amazing dressing) with a generous portion of fresh, perfectly grilled fish. My boyfriend's fav was the veggie sandwich - he said their homemade bread was outstanding. (Pro tip: try the sweet potato fries with their garlic aioli. So good!) We also split a tasty pizza here. Probably the most obvious pre-prepared pre-packaged meal aimed towards tourists just happy to be eating outdoors with a beautiful view that I've ever had in my entire life. Only good things were the cheap happy hour drinks and fries. Salad, rib salsa, and cole slaw were definitely sitting around in bags, the kids burger looked like overcooked beyond burgers, and the catch of the day was from a day 2 days ago. I may be mistaken that the catch was fresh but the cook may have left it on for those 2 days. Reminded me of the lava fields we just drove by in terms of moistness. Would NEVER recommend this place to anyone I thought well of. No idea how it got 4 stars to begin with....I should have gotten a premonition from the waitress's indifferent attitude, maybe she was signaling that I we should have walked out based on bad service before we got hit with the bill. I stayed in Kona for 5 nights and had breakfast here 3 times! The Kona coffee is delicious, and everything we've had on the breakfast menu has been scrumptious. My favorites were (again) the COFFEE, the BANANA MACADAMIA PANCAKES with coconut syrup, and the CINNAMON PULLAPART BREAD from the Pastry Window which was just so fluffy and delicious with an amazing sauce. They will heat it up for you if you ask! I do have one complaint, though. Why is this amazing cinnamon pull-apart bread not called CINNAMON EXPLOSION!? When it comes to breakfast, Island Lava Java is a nice spot for relaxing with a cup of joe and enjoying the morning scenery. I ordered the luau omelette with the kalua pork inside, along with a side of the rustic potatoes as well as of the Portuguese sausage that seems to be so popular on the island. I would have wanted a larger portion, but it turns out to be just right for the day ahead. Afterwards, it was nice to sit back and look out on the water with a vanilla latte in hand. The place has a nice, open-aired vibe, and at least for breakfast that day, had a live musician playing the ukulele. One tip: We found out only after dining here, but if you're staying as a guest at the Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village (check your own resort), you can get a discount card from the resort that you can then present to various merchants in the Kona area. I have to figure out how to make them at home, because WOW. After a bit of snorkeling, we came back for brunch (while we were there for coffee, the waitress walked by with someone else's meal...and it looked amazing!). I brought my whole family to Island Lava Java house for breakfast a couple of days ago. Our waiter was a dry when we had to order and as we got served he warmed up to us and became friendly. Food was good and we decided to come back the next day. When we returned we decided to order a few warm drinks and pastries. The "Barista" took our order and was absolutely not happy to do so, he made it as unwelcoming and unpleasant as possible. We are polite so we use our manners, we wouldn't even make eye contact with us and you can tell he did not give a flying f#ck about his job. Even my 8 year old child who we teach manners commented on how rude he was. We get our drinks, and when he comes out with a our pastries boxed up he just drops it on the counter and doesn't say anything (WTF) I asked if that's ours and said yeah! Unbelievable, at this point we grab our stuff and on my way out I brought up his rude attitude to the lady in charge at the front, and instead of saying she would address the situation and talk to him about his behavior she made the excuse of saying that he needs help back there... I can tell she was afraid of even saying anything to him. What a disappointing feeling. If the owner or GM of this business even cares about customer service they should think twice about the staff they hire. I would really stress to the waiters and that rude diva of a barista to be customer service friendly, it goes a long way! You want your locals and your seasonal tourist to come back. Im a business owner myself and I wouldn't allow my employees to bring down my business like this. read more
