I've been to Island Flava three times now (all prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic, so I do not know if they are still open for takeout currently, or if they are temporarily closed altogether) and while the service was friendly and efficient, I found the food overall mostly just ok. I did live in Toronto's Little Jamaica for many years, so may have been spoiled by all the good eats there ;)
My first visit was for a beef patty ($2.50). It was ok to satisfy a craving, but a bit light in the filling department, as in it was mostly pastry, but the pastry wasn't even all that flaky or tasty.
Their lunch specials are a good deal at $6.99. You get rice and peas, a salad, and jerk chicken, chicken curry or vegetable curry. I had the jerk chicken on my second visit and the curry chicken on my third visit.
For the jerk chicken I got a drumstick and part of a thigh. The chicken was very tender and fell off the bone easily. The seasonings were different than most jerk chicken I've had. It was also oiler/greasier than I like. However, it was still good.
The rice and beans were not as flavourful, but the salad was fresh and crisp.
The curry chicken was boneless and fall apart tender. It was very flavourful, but not spicy at all. I would say the chicken curry was my favourite of the things I've had at Island Flava. If it was a bit spicier it would have been even better. The rice and salad was the same as with the jerk chicken combo except they pour curry sauce over the rice instead of the jerk sauce. I think I prefer the curry sauce.
Most people come for takeout, but they do have a small eating area should you want to eat in (obviously not at this time, but once life is back to normal, post-COVID-19 Pandemic).
